The Mansons Were a Family Too, Auburn!
Posted by Jonathan Kelley on February 9th, 2010
Over the course of the past few days the terms "family" and "Auburn" have been tossed around entirely too much. It should not be surprising in this day in age, when the term family has taken on multiple meanings, and within our progressively existential philosophy-driven world will most likely continue to erode.
I am not opposed to teams, universities, businesses, or any entity attempting to create a family atmosphere. However, how stable is it for someone to assume that you are family because you share loyalties?
This way of thinking is at best naive and at worst ignorant. No one no matter how many hours they spent attending Auburn truly believes that their college attendees are family. If they do believe this then how little emphasis does that put on their real families?
In most cultures the family is revered as a sacred and holy entity. The church in Christianity is referred to as the bride of Christ. The church is the family of God, and his embodiment on earth.
In Middle Eastern culture's family is just as sacred and is held in the highest regard next to only God. India, China, Japan, nearly 3/4 of the earth's population recognizes family as something to be held in the highest regard.
So why in our culture do we throw the term around so loosely as to encompass a fan base. I truly believe that the people of Auburn only want to emphasize the closeness of their alumni and fans, but still it is insane to refer to everyone associated with Auburn as family.
Every time I hear the term used in context to Auburn all I can think of is the Manson family. Charlie Manson referred to his group of misfits and crazies as a family with a mission and goals.
It was their creed and beliefs in Charles that made them a family and their mission that drove them forward. Although I am not comparing Auburn or its many accomplished and respected fans to the Mansons, I am using an example of how misguided the usage of the term family can be.
Below are the most loose and common definitions of what family means in the English vernacular.
· a social unit living together
· primary social group; parents and children
· class: a collection of things sharing a common attributes
· people descended from a common ancestor
· kin: a person having kinship with another or others
· syndicate: a loose affiliation of gangsters in charge of organized criminal activities
· an association of people who share common beliefs or activities
By these definitions anyone or any group could be considered a family. Chimps and apes are considered family in the animal kingdom. It is ridiculous to assume that by saying that "We are Family" that it makes it so.
To Auburn and to any other fan base or group be proud to be close, but keep in mind that family is meant to be sacred institution. Let's try and keep it that way. If one presents a great family atmosphere then promote the atmosphere, but do not assume that makes one a family.
Gangsters consider themselves a family, the Nazi's where all the children of Hitler, and Manson had a family. Be proud to be an Auburn Tiger and a member of a strong and close fan base, but assume that makes a family. Families are much more than that and they should always stay that way.

Do you not get it because you are a bammer, or are you a bammer because you don't get it? One of the great chicken & egg philosophical questions.
Either way, it isn't surprising.

AUChizad trying to be profound = a good day.
A much better day is watching another BleacherReport bammer-blogger moron try to dissect Auburn in some "un-profound" way that totally fails.
I guess we should stop saying "father figure" and "home away from home" too. I mean, to call a college campus your "home" is demeaning to the actual "home" our one, true "family" provided when growing up. I mean, even maggots have a "home"....
See how easy it is to sound stupid? Oh, but it's "valid points" because it's about Auburn. I've never seen a group of people manage to be as condescendingly jealous as Alabama fans / media.

Don't even think about asking a bammer "What is a derivative?".

I read the headline of the article and moved on.

LMAO....the Little Brother Syndrome from SPuat is getting out of hand, and I'm LOVING IT!!!! AAAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! Hey bammers, write another blog about Auburn, better yet, call into a Talk Radio Show and talk about Auburn...it doesn't matter what the subject is....just keep talking about Auburn. Quick question, who won the MNC this year? Yeah, I've forgotten too...LMAO.
-
I actually do consider my fellow AU grads as family. Call me a simpleton, but I would do anything in my power to help an AU person in need. That's what "family" is all about.

Yep. 100% true.
Being anywhere in the world and getting a "War Eagle!" from another fan... that is special too. I have never had anyone anywhere respond with anything other than a smile and a "War Eagle!" right back.
bammer doesn't get it - it's hard to be a family when your tree has no branches.

If we're going to argue about petty facts irrelevant to football, then let's argue about something that I give a fuck about:
Coaches' wives.
Neither are particularly smokin', but Chizik has a clear advantage. Consider it the tie breaker for the height battle.

Newsflash, just because a comment isn't "Pro-Auburn" doesn't make it poop throwing. If it did you would've buried the board in preseason last year.
-
It warms my heart to see ol Dye sporting his colors (hunter orange) and representing. Nobody bothers the guy as he reads the paper and takes his coffee. It would take too long to get an intelligible reply if one were to ask him a question. So he strolls by and stops to give me a look as if he recognizes me, and I just nod. He smiles and ambles on to his truck. That is an atmosphere about Auburn that strikes me as different than many other places.

Hey, not everything I post is "pro Auburn" but your responses are poop throwing for the most part because they usually involve taking a shot at something Auburn when you post in reply. Example:
"I believe Chizik and Saban are near the same height." - Not pro-Auburn but also not poop throwing.
"How tall is Chizik?" - poop throwing.
All in the attitude, Kingpin. All in the attitude.

Seen Chizik's wife in person. She's a fucking heinous bitch. The camera does her many favors. Her face looks like somebody took an axe to a block of wood.

And yet all you guys can talk about is us. Sad really. Poor little Awbren threaten you that much?
To compare the family thing to the likes of Nazis and the Mansons is absurb at best. Family can mean physically related or symbolic in a close knit kind of way. The Nazis and Mansons were the first. Auburn is the second. Epic FAIL on this writer's part. I hope he doesn't quit his day job. He is about as bad as Critterden that Kaos loves so much.

Is it me or does Saban's wife kinda look like Chizik in the face?

Chiz has that look on his face as if he's questioning himself on whether or not he just pooped.

I August, it will be 20 years since I graduated AU (TY God). And even back then we referred to ourselves as the Auburn FAMILY. This is nothing new. It's only now that AU has weathered the storm without killing off its own that the bamzos are trying to understand how we did that. It is a family. Sure there are some relatives you don't like, but in the end, there are very few that we would not piss on if they were on fire.

I erred. I said chizik's wife. I meant Saban's.
Never seen Chiziks wife. Saban's hatchet face totem pole looking wife I have seen. She is horrifying. A crone.
Apologies

You don't suppose that response was directed to the person talking about how short Saban is, do you? You don't do much supposin'. A lot of posting, not enough supposing.

was actually scratching my head on that one too.....she's a good looking woman to me.

I do get the whole family analogy. However I hear Roll Tide and a smile to follow everywhere I go even when we were not doing so well. I feel the family thing came around years ago when Auburn was really second fiddle to Alabama and the only fans of Auburn had a tie to the University. However times have changed and the Auburn family has grown to include people who have no tie to the university. I know when I set foot on the campus of the Capstone (another reason Auburn was really second fiddle not a poke) I feel like I am home. So I am not sure Auburn has cornered the market on family and your campus feels better or whatever but you are saying you love the University which is what all fans say about their University.
-
Both campuses are very nice, but fuck Auburn's parking, and their ticket happy rent-a-cops.

My only complaint with Jordan Hare stems from some idiot that thought it was a good idea to replace our troughs in the mens room with urinals. It has caused me a great deal of waiting in line time that should only happen at the ladies room.

I thought I read that the Governor of Alabama called The University of Alabama the capstone of public education. However I was wrong. It was the University President G.H Denny that called Alabama the capstone. You can retract my statement about "another reason". Any University President would called their university the best.
