Title: I was wrong...
Post by: Kaos on January 04, 2010, 02:27:47 PM
I refused to watch The Office.  Tried one show in the middle of the second season and didn't get what was going on--  so I just let it slide.

Was in a situation over the holidays where I was with some people who were hooked on it and doing a first-season marathon-type thing.

I was wrong. Much better show than I realized.

I see several of the characters on this board, actually.  Andy and Dwight for sure.  And Kevin.

It's funny but I'm not hooked don it like some.

For some it's the whole Jim/Pam thing, but I'll be honest I don't give a shit about that at all.  That's useless.

It's the Michael dynamic that intrigues me.  The guy was really good at sales.  That's his forte.  So he was promoted up the chain until he landed in a job at which he is utterly and completely ineffective.  It's a tremendous lesson in the American business model and, quite honestly, made me rethink some of the changes I planned to make in my own business this year.  Is it better to allow someone to flourish at a job they are extremely good at or to put them in a position to flounder when moved up to a different slot?

Obviously no manager could survive the gross racial and gender insensitivities Michael exhibits, but that's done for humor (hyperbole, as it were).  And I think the things he says are what many people probably think but would never say.

Ever seen the British version?

I have that entire series on DVD.

I think it's much funnier, but I definitely like the US one as well.

British people are just funnier in general to me, I don't know why. I guess going back to reruns of Monty Python, The Young Ones, or Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy I watched when I was younger.

Anyway, the first couple of seasons of the US version are a mirror image of the British version.

The US version survived way longer though, so now they're on their own.

After the third season, the show lost direction to me.  It's not nearly as good now as it was over the first three.

I'm waiting for it to jump the shark.  It tried with the fired/quit/transferred/rehired deal that's affected Michael, Pam, Dwight, Toby, Jim and Ryan so far.

I prefer British humor, too.  Benny Hill was funny to me. Fawlty Towers... It's dry and sarcastic.  I like that.

Love The Office K. I was like you. Wasnt sold at first but then watched a few more episodes and got hooked. Michael's brand of humor is great. The "most people think it but don't say it" mentality he exhibits is spot on. I see several "Dwights" on this board.  You see the one where he stepped on a hot Foreman grill? You would have thought he was paralyzed from the neck down. Then Dwight goes to get him since he can't drive and wrecks his 88 Firebird in the parking lot, promptly gets out and pukes all over the back window. Priceless.

And then when Dwight goes in for the CT of his head, Michael tried to put his slightly burned foot into the scanner too, and has to be escorted out...

classic...

I'm probably in the minority, but I don't really care for Jim.

From a production standpoint?  I'd rather have Dwight and Michael's insanity than Jim's ambivalence.  I admire the creativity of the pranks, but as an employee he ranks behind Dwight, Andy and even Stanley.

I understand the slogging through the day thing, though.  I feel like that most days unfortunately.   I need to be out talking to people and DOING things.  But when I bought this company and deposed the previous administration, I became more chained to the office.  If I'm not here, I don't have that strong second hand to keep it working.  If I'm not here, somebody decides it's time to run the clock up and go home.  Or they get in a fight.  Or somebody sprains an ankle playing frisbee behind the building.  So I spend way too much of my day "looking" productive (and posting here).  I still go places, but not like I want/need to.

Toby is a pretty accurate representation of the buzz-kill that HR can be.  They got that right.

I have been watching since season 1.  The original office (british) season 1 was funnier, but to me I see them as two totally different shows.

If you haven't seen it pick up Extras, another show by Ricky Gervais.  2 seasons on HBO, I wish they had done more absolutely hysterical.

I like The Office but I never found time to watch it.

If you like The Office, check out Modern Family.  That show is hilarious.

It's crass.

Can't get past the queer dudes.  That just isn't funny and offends me on about ten levels.

Yeah, I realize Oscar is gay on The Office but it's handled differently.

I'm really a snob when it comes to TV and movies.  The writing has to be creative and smart enough to go beyond what's on the screen.  I have to get a broader meaning.

It's why I loved The Sopranos so much.  Sure it was a show about a mob guy, but it really wasn't.  It was a lot more than that.  Much, much deeper.

While The Office is crass (to an extent) it has a broader scope than just the surface.  I tried Modern Family but I didn't really get that sense.  I found it to be stretching the bounds of credulity in an attempt for cheap laughs.

Typically, however, I don't pick up on a show until it's been around at least three years anyway.  I didn't find Dexter until this season.  Wanted to let it "get its legs" I guess.

And Kevin.

One of my favorites was when they told the new girl that Kevin was retarded.

I told a new guy a member of this board was "mentally challenged".  They bought it for a while.

Made me laugh when they did it to Kev.

And anyone who watches regularly will love this compilation.  Because of the timing of when it happened, the one at 1:15 was always the funniest to me.

Right......instant classic. Dude is hilarious.

On a side note: Am I the only one who loves "Pawn Stars" on History Channel?

That's pretty good.  I love the "that's what she said" moments because they're basically high school.  I remember doing that in eleventh grade.

No doubt in my mind Chumlee is an Alabama fan.

Exactly, it's childish, and yet it enters Michael's mind regardless of the situation.  Someone that he considers a friend is yelling at him because Michael stabbed him in the back...."that's what she said".  He's sitting with a lawyer during a lawsuit involving his girlfriend getting fired..."that's what she said".  To him, life is still worthy of 11th grade humor and logic.
