It is painfully obvious that this staff is unable to solve any of this and that they've just started accepting it and trying to limit the damage. That has to really burn if you're an Auburn fan, because at this time last year, no matter how bad things were, you at least had a coach with the experience and the aptitude to solve football problems.
I'm not going to say any more. Read and make up your own mind. I've been jabbed before because his opinion tends to jibe with mine on many issues.

I was wondering about that. I saw one LSU lineman tie up three Auburn players Saturday. It was like they put their heads down and don't look where they're going. It was certainly befuddling.

Graham invited him over and promised him that he would be in complete control of the offense. It was a lateral move for Gus, but Graham was straight up on his word.
This was in Gus's second year when he was in Tulsa. He was Rival's offensive coordinator of the year after his first year at Arkansas. Even after being handcuffed by HDN.
Big time programs want to see more proof than 1 year with the big boys. Gus will not hurt your program. He's a good guy with football smarts and a good coach. I don't know what yall's problem is, but I'll wager it is not Gus.

This is why I've been posting like a madman and contemplating putting out a hit on Jacobs.
My wife likes NFL football more than college. She was able to point out to me yesterday that almost every NFL game is a great game with players making spectacular plays and coaches putting together a quality gameplan. Rarely do you have to watch a team just lay an egg.
I'll switch if I have to, damnit. I'm going to get my football fix, and when apathy takes over by the end of the 1st quarter, I can't help but wonder what else I could do with my Saturday.

It's usually not much of an improvement from two years when your QB throws for around 4,000 yards and 35 TDs, your RB rushes for around 1,600 yards and 18 TDs, and one receiver has around 1,800 yards and 15 TDs....then in steps Coach Malzahn. Now for two years you have a QB that throws for around 10,000 yards and 85 TDs, a RB that rushes for around 2,500 and 25 TDs, and multiple receivers with over 1,000 yards each year. Actually Coach Malzahn's offense set an NCAA Team Record for the first time that a team had a QB throw for more than 5,000 yards passing, a RB with over 1,000 yards rushing AND 3 Receivers with over 1,000 yards receiving.
But, yeah, not much of an improvement...... :fu:

I'm not really sure what all of that means. Tulsa had the same QB in 2006 when they were 30th as Malzahn had in 2007 when they were 1st. Then he had a different QB for 2008....when they were 1st again. I'm not sure what your point is.

So when Auburn racks up 1,000+ yards against Mississippi State and Tennessee, the coaches get no credit? The players just got together before the game and drew up some plays they thought would work? Mississippi State gave up 589 yards to us. They held Florida to 376.
No one is saying we haven't sucked it up the last three games. But I'm just wondering how we had success in games 1-5? Who gets the credit? You are so quick to blame the coaches for the last three games, but who prepared and coached the team to come out 5-0 to start with? Who designed and called the plays they ran that led to 589 yards on MSU and 459 yards on UT?

Tennessee was game #5. So Monty Kiffin had 4 game films from Auburn, plus two years of Tulsa film. They even admitted that they studied it before the season started. And still, with Monty Kiffin, 4 games of film, and off-season studying, they still had to call time outs in the first half that were the equivalent of tapping out in an MMA fight. They simply could't stop it. That's the same defense that gave up 323 yds to Florida, 241 to Georgia, and 256 to Alabama.
Also, look back at Tulsa. The competition there had 2 years to stop it and Tulsa still led the nation in total offense...for two years.
Chris Todd playing like a blind, one legged, 6 year old girl has nothing to do with being predictable. And on top of that we aren't executing anymore. There is no offense more predictable than Paul Johnson's at Georgia Tech. And even so, they average 291 rushing yards per game.
In my opinion the QB play is the root problem. Todd gave us enough of a passing game early on to make the offense balanced and kept defenses on their heels. It also helped Malzahn get into a bit of a rhythm in play calling. Right now, with Todd useless, it's screwing up every other aspect of the offense.

Saban wasn't exactly left with the cupboard full either, and he's made it work pretty fucking well in a short amount of time. Sure, we had Andre Smith and Rolando McClain, but thats about it. We had like 4 scholarship LBs, one being a converted DB. There was an obvious upgrade on offense and with QB play when McElwain came on board. The RBs are night and day from what he had to work with in '07. The OL is comparable, but the DL is night and day as well. Receivers are better. For all those years of AU fans saying that our probation wasn't an excuse with our scholarships being down and handicapping us in recruiting, some of you sure are quick to point out the reasoning for AU slumping now.
Alot of spots on AU's team are young, but you make it work. Saban's first year wasn't great or anything, and neither is Chizik's. I think the difference is everybody just knows Saban will be able to take a turd and turn it into gold. Chizik hasn't quite shown that ability, and I think thats what has the AU fanbase a little nervous. Personally, I don't think Chizik is the type of coach that can rebuild a program from the ground up if need be. No doubt CTT having his ass handed to him in recruiting his last two years has impacted this team today. But just remember, it was guys like Prowler who were defending CTT his last two years talking about how he was recruiting just as good as Saban. Saban wasn't exactly left with the cupboard full either, and he's made it work pretty fucking well in a short amount of time. Sure, we had Andre Smith and Rolando McClain, but thats about it. We had like 4 scholarship LBs, one being a converted DB. There was an obvious upgrade on offense and with QB play when McElwain came on board. The RBs are night and day from what he had to work with in '07. The OL is comparable, but the DL is night and day as well. Receivers are better. For all those years of AU fans saying that our probation wasn't an excuse with our scholarships being down and handicapping us in recruiting, some of you sure are quick to point out the reasoning for AU slumping now.
Alot of spots on AU's team are young, but you make it work. Saban's first year wasn't great or anything, and neither is Chizik's. I think the difference is everybody just knows Saban will be able to take a turd and turn it into gold. Chizik hasn't quite shown that ability, and I think thats what has the AU fanbase a little nervous. Personally, I don't think Chizik is the type of coach that can rebuild a program from the ground up if need be. No doubt CTT having his ass handed to him in recruiting his last two years has impacted this team today. But just remember, it was guys like Prowler who were defending CTT his last two years talking about how he was recruiting just as good as Saban. The problem is getting to that top 10 or top 5 ranking. AU went from being unranked to #17 in 1 week. Had they continued to smash people in the way they were doing, you could easily say that AU would be a top 5 team in another few weeks. Especially with how alot of the top 15 teams have been somewhat unimpressive.
If Chizik had the talent that UF or UA has, or say, the talent Miles was left from the Saban years, then yeah I think he could do something with that. I mean, its hard to fuck that up as long as you put those players in the correct system. Take Miles for example. Saban left the cupboard overflowing for him, and Miles certainly reaped the benefits. The first year that he has to rely mostly on his recruits (2008), he falls flat on his face. But the second part to the whole talent thing is, you HAVE to make sure you are evaluating these players correctly. Take Kodi Burns for example. Crazy numbers in high school. Total beast. He steps foot on campus at AU and doesn't know his asshole from his elbow at QB. You're going to have some busts with recruits, thats just a fact of life. You just have to minimize your losses. But, when you're dealing with true blue-chip talent, you don't have to coach them up over the years. You simply maintain them. It doesn't take a genius to teach them the game, you just turn them loose and let them play. Say AU had a top 5 recruiting class. You really don't know if it was in reality a top 5 class until you get those kids on the field and play some ball. You have to see who is going to bust, qualify, etc.

Our amazing coaching staff got us through the first 5 games with amazing impressive wins. Our shitty players cost us the next 3 because they suck and had nothing to do with bashing the brains in on lesser talent.
That makes good sense.
I however take the exact opposite view. We used superior talent to devastate weaker opponents, Our coaches could not give us a winning game plan when faced by teams that are at our level on talent but have coaching staffs that actually know what they are doing.
We lost to Kentucky because of turnovers, however to prove that point then you must admit that we beat WVU because of the number of turnovers they committed.
Last year these players were expected to win the west. We heard that all summer long. This year these players were 2nd rate bums and there is no way the coaches could coach them to win. Thats what the coaching staff said this summer.
These coaches are hanging their ineptitude on the players with Auburn on their jerseys. I swear I don't see how you can call yourselves Auburn people quote their drivel.

Got pretty much all of it wrong.
We don't have amazing coaches and we don't have poopty players.
Our coaches and our players combined to win five games to start the year. Three of those five teams were decent teams, not pushovers.
The last three games have been, in my opinion, a combination of those same coaches and players not continuing to do the things that made them successful the first five games. What are those things? I'm not even sure outside of Chris Todd's play, which is considerably worse (which is an observable fact).
Personally I think that (Chris Todd's ineffectiveness) has thrown everything else off. Zero threat to pass = tough life on your running game. Zero passing threat + stacked box = tough day for any offensive coach to find plays that have much of a chance to succeed and prevents get into any play calling rhythm (ie you can't mix it up at all because you can't rely on either passing or running to set up the other).
Anyway, I think the credit for success should be spread around to the players and the coaches and the fault of failure should go to both as well.
As for "these same players were picked to win the west"...that was based off of two things....1. the previous 5 years in which Auburn had won 50 games, and 2. The Peach Bowl. Neither of those things would have made last years team SEC West champs.
And I guess I (and the rest of the literate world) missed where these coaches called their players "2nd rate bums". They said we were thin at some positions, young at some positions, and needed to get the overall talent level and depth back to where they were in 2004. Is it me or is that not EXACTLY what should be said of this team? We have SOME talent sprinkled around the team. But it's not a team full of talent. That's just the truth.
