Man I was there last night and saw it first hand. We just don't have the players we usually have on D. Granted I do think they could do better, but I'm not out for his head this year.

You're right. We don't have the players we usually have on defense. They've already overcame their 2 and 3 star status and bolted straight to the NFL.
Brian Kelly laughs at those who complains of talent deprivation. It's called coaching. It might not get you championships, but it will definitely get you better as the year progresses.
