I read that too. The only way they seem to respond to all these articles is just simply defense mode.

Random thought.

Malzahn supposedly used the talent of the Springdale kids as a boost to the college level.  How many of those kids actually panned out?  Is it possible that THEY used Malzahn as a spingboard to a college scholarship that they wouldn't have otherwise had?

I can only think of one.  The receiver at USC.

Okay, now I'm curious.  The Springdale Five.

Damian Williams - Led USC in receptions in 2008

Andrew Norman - Is at Tulsa.  He has great leaping ability and his favorite movie is Troy.  Nothing else to say.

Mitch Mustain - Buried so far down on USC's depth chart he has to use a periscope to see the scout team

Bartley Webb - Went to Notre Dame. Never played. Has retired from football.

Ben Cleveland - Still at Arkansas.  Good news is that his 2009 production is ELEVEN TIMES that of 2008. Bad news? He had one yard on one catch in 2008.

Stud, dud, dud, dud, dud.

You pretty much summed it all up for us.

Houston Nutt was forced into giving the job to Gus to land the recruits. That's his story.
Mitch was Gatorade player of the year. Not a dud. He was 8-0 as a starter for us right out of high school.
Nutt pulled the reins from Gus early and we bombed at the end of the year.
Gus and the kids were lied to and they bailed.
If Mitch, Darren McFadden, Peyton Hillis, Felix Jones, etc. et al would have been able to run Gus's offense unhindered, ain't no telling where they would have carried us. Especially in a second year.
Gus didn't get a fair shake at Arkansas. He knew way more about football than our head coach did. Nutt couldn't handle it.

As a college football player Mitch Mustain is a bust.  No other way to spin that.

Don't disagree with much else.

You guys would have been electrifying.

For selfish reasons, I'm glad Nutt was a dumbass.

How is 8-0 in the SEC as a freshman starter a bust?

What is Mr. Mustain doing today?

Is Charlie Weiss a bust?

Mitch is getting a free degree from USC and rolling in their trim. Don't be real surprised when he signs with the pros without ever starting a game at USC.

Ok.  I won't.

I also won't be surprised if he forgets my fries at the Crowley's Ridge Burger King.

The rolling in USC trim...very intriguing.

Mustain is a 21 year old senior who has thrown for 1,051 yards and 12 TDs in his career.   I would say that qualifies him as a bust considering he was THE #1 QB coming out in 2006.

And to say he was "8-0" as a starter is technically true, but let's not spin that too much.  He participated in exactly one quality win in that streak, and that was against Auburn, in which he threw a total of 10 passes.

In 2006, McFadden and Jones had over 3,000 yards of total offense.  Mustain handed them the ball against
Utah State
Vanderbilt (2 pt win over 4-8 team),
Alabama (OT win over 6-7 team in which he went 7-22),
Auburn (ten passes),
SE Missouri St (he was 5-13),
Ole Miss (4-8 team),
La-Monroe (he was 7-18 with 2 picks),
South Carolina, but he only threw one pass, and it was a pick.

So yes, technically his team won 8 games that he started, but he had virtually nothing to do with the wins, as the scraped by in spite of him.  Check the two games against SEMO St and La-Monroe, the two games where they opened it up a little.  He was a combined 12 of 31.

I'm sure he's better now, just because he's no longer an 18 year old freshman, but his legend was built on the last quarter against USC because he completed a few passes and ran for a TD.  But that was it, that was the peak of his career to this point.

If he ends up in the NFL I'll be shocked.

At least he's started a DI game.

Paging Matt Cassel.

USC gets a QB tons of credibility...warranted or not.
