BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - The Jefferson County chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference plans a Tuesday rally and news conference.

The Pastor Calvin Woods says the civil right group will team with Jefferson County workers asking the county commission to vote for bringing workers back on the job September 21st. The SCLC is also expected to ask again, for Governor Bob Riley to come and take control of the county from county commissioners. Wood says the group may also demand the resignation of certain county commissioners.

The Jefferson County Commission is expected to vote at 10 o'clock on a resolution asking county workers to come back next Monday. So far, Commissioners Bobby Humphreys, William Bell and Shelia Smoot support the resolution. Commissioners Bettye Fine Collins and Jim Carns oppose it, saying it may be illegal to bring back workers if the county cannot pay their salaries.

Commissioner William Bell, who last week with commissioners Bobby Humphryes and Shelia Smoot supported a resolution to bring employees from unpaid leave, said he did not want to do more harm by bringing employees back to work, only to place them on leave again.
