Charles Hollis' picks: Alabama should win; Auburn won't
Posted by Charles Hollis -- Birmingham News September 04, 2009 5:20 AM
This we know about No. 7 Virginia Tech.
Over the past five years, Tech's defense has led the nation in total defense twice (2005-06), been fourth twice (2004 and '07), and ranked seventh a year ago.
No team in the nation can match the Hokies' 263.05-yard average the past half-decade.
Facing No. 5 Alabama's new quarterback Greg McElroy, a fourth-year junior making his first college start, and an offensive line that has three new starters, a veteran Hokies defense must think it just got college football's version of a stimulus package.
And this is something we believe about 2009 Alabama. The defense is better. There is more speed. McElroy has a better arm than John Parker Wilson. Nick Saban has Florida and Utah -- two crushing losses to end the 2008 season -- to mess with his players' heads.
This week's picks:
ALABAMA VS. VIRGINIA TECH
There is not a team on Alabama's schedule that will put more pressure on McElroy and a young offensive line than the Hokies come Saturday night in the Georgia Dome. Their coordinator, Bud Foster, specializes in confusing offenses. Tech will come after McElroy when the buses roll into the parking lot. You get the picture. Just like the Tide will try to do with Hokie junior quarterback Tyrod Taylor, who is the second coming of Michael Vick in Blacksburg. He runs; he throws; he scares defenses. And he plays behind a line that has a combined 87 starts. Tech's Achilles' heel is its running game -- 1,000-yard rusher Darren Evans suffered a season-ending knee injury in the preseason -- and Taylor when he's pressed to make a decision on the fly. How does Alabama win? Better speed, a deep passing threat the Tide didn't have in its arsenal last year and the school's best defensive team since the 1992 national championship season.
Alabama 20, Virginia Tech 13
LOUISIANA TECH AT AUBURN
The word is the Auburn defense is going to be good. Real good. It better be. With a new coaching staff and a new system and a quarterback, Chris Todd, who most of us thought couldn't play in the SEC, ailing arm or not, this ought to be interesting with 13½-point underdog Louisiana Tech coming in. La. Tech has nine starters returning on defense, and its offense has all its skill people back from a team that went 8-5 and played in the Independence Bowl. Tech coach Derek Dooley can't match up in overall talent, but his preparation will be through the roof. He's coached over the years with Will Muschamp and Nick Saban and, well, guess who's helped with the preparation?
Louisiana Tech 23, Auburn 21

Of course LA Tech will win. Not only is Saban going to win a MNC this year, but every god damned coach that ever coached with Saban is now invincible too? What the fuck ever...

Its not like he's the only one picking La Tech over AU......

But the reason...of Saban helped LA Tech is priceless...and typical...
-
Fuck Tech and Hollis!
-
Yep he picked them based on the coach.....ours not theirs. Oh and I don't think Saban took the time with his team facing a top 10 team to help Dooley with preparation.

Who the fuck is Charles Hollis, and why the fuck should I care what he thinks?

He's already a bammer. That's worse than anything on your list.
But I am particularly incensed by the opening lines of his column...like he is truly giving Auburn it's due, and like we aren't smart enough to see right through it.
phuking bammers. Geezus.
