Title: DC Rumor
Post by: Subterranean Jack on January 10, 2008, 04:30:33 PM
James Willis may be the next DC at Auburn. Story was posted on Goldberg's blog but quickly withdrawn.

Finebaum was talking about this on his show earlier.  He had Bryan Matthews from Rivals on, and he said he didn't think it was going to happen, but he admitted that he didn't know for sure.  I'm not sure how I'd feel about this if it's true.  I admit that I don't like a coach that is learning on the job, but I think we could do worse.

I am surprised and I think Auburn could do much worse, but Willis is a pretty young coach and I gotta think Tuberville is thinking of co-defensive coordinators, one being Willis, the other ???? (preferrably someone who coaches DBs). I think Dunn has the line covered.

A good coat of semen will clear that up.

I would like for our new DC to at least be able to break half as many clipboards during games as Muschamp was able to.  That's my only criteria.

I've used that line before, but never on Brad.

What the hell is the problem?  It is taking this long to announce a DC, and it could be coming from within our staff?  Doesn't sound good to me.

Move along.  Nothing to see here.  TT is a defensive coach first.  We have RARELY been disappointed with the defensive side of the ball.  We will be fine with whomever we get.

Word.  For confirmation, check out StatTiger's defensive analysis under Tubs.  We could have Jojo the helper monkey as DC, assisted by Mike Shula and still post a top 10 D.

When Tuberville promotes from within, it is a debacle. Or at least that one time it was.

I will not be pleased with a promotion of Willis.

Sooooo, if they do promote him, who do they hire to coach the DB's?

I wold guess the '03 debacle of promoting Nall to OC from OL coach.

However, I would not be to disappointed with promoting Willis. I have no reason other than I liked him as a player though and he seems to be doing a fine job with the LB's.

I see what you are saying, but I think that they could keep the defense they have now and Tubs could help Willis make some in game decisions. Defense just does not seem as difficult to coach as offense. (from a complexity side).

The defense is already in tact. And I'm sure the current crop of coaches can coach it. So the only thing we will be lacking on is in game calling experience. Can we overcome that?

If we promote from within, it will be a bad hire in that the media will have a field day about AU not being able to hire a big name coordinator.  The bamaham media is just waiting for the opportunity to make AU look bad to the public, and potential recruits.

Agree. Promoting from within does not provide the "splash" factor we need considering the public and tawdry way Muschamp left

Bellichek would be a good fit to counter Chow at the helm of the Tahrd offense, but do you really think Auburn wants him?

There's a plan coming in from Clearwater, Fl. and it should touchdown around 1930.  This plane left the Opelika Airport this moring at 0930 and arrived at the Clearwater Airport around 1300.  Could this be our new DC?  Or just another recruiting visit by our coaches?  It's a Socata Tobago (single-piston) airplane.....it's flying at 107 kts at around 4000 feet.....as of right now it has 92 miles left, before landing.....Does Brian Billick own a condo in Clearwater?  How about Vic Koenning.....Or it could be Monte Kiffin ???

I think it's going to be Paul Rhoades....DC out of Pittsburgh.  Pitt has had top Defenses nearly every year, plus this was the guy that we wanted Before we landed Gene Chizik...he turned us down back then, citing family issues or some shit.  Anyway, if it's him, he's a Big Name.
