Feud Between Two Alabama Families Turns Into Full-Scale Riot

Monday , August 24, 2009

AP

MARION, Ala.  —
Two Alabama families that had been fighting for years turned their feud into a full-scale riot Monday outside a small-town city hall, with up to 150 screaming people hurling tire irons and wielding baseball bats.

Eight people were arrested, and at least four were hurt, Trooper John Reese said. Two were taken to hospitals. The town's police chief was hit in the head with a crowbar but was OK.

The two- or three-year-old feud apparently prompted a fight earlier in the day at a high school, after a window was shot out of a home Sunday night. Then, "all hell broke loose" later in the day, said Sgt. Carlton Hogue of the Perry County Sheriff's Department.

"It was a full-scale riot is what it was," said Tony Long, mayor of the town of 3,300 about 85 miles west of Montgomery.

Hogue said the rioters were "throwing jack irons, throwing tire irons, anything they could get their hands on." Some people carried baseball bats and brooms.

Reese said two people were arrested at the high school during the initial disturbance. Relatives of the people who were arrested followed officers to police headquarters at city hall, and then the melee erupted.

Six more people were arrested at city hall, Reese said, and police called in reinforcements from surrounding cities. Some officers wore riot gear, and many planned to stay overnight to help maintain order.

The mayor said he wasn't sure what sparked the fracas.

"Everybody's trying to point the finger at everybody," he said.

Judson College, a church-affiliated women's school with about 300 students in downtown Marion, issued an alert asking students to stay out of the downtown area for 24 hours as a precaution.

I got a text message via the Alumnae chapter saying the school was initially on lockdown...

I am not exactly sure if what Marion has truly "qualifies" as a downtown or not...

I read about that this morning.  Why were there 150 people involved and who were the teams?  Were they all pissed at the cops?  Were there two sides battling it out?  Or did someone just yell "Food fight"?

Reading is fundamental... counselor.

And I hate to disparage the premise of this article, but knowing Marion like I do, I kind of doubt any football allegiance had anything to do with anything.  That town is still stuck in the 1800's.  Totally archaic.

Had nothing to do with it but unless the demographic has changed in the last few years it was almost all turd.

Well excuse meeee...but there was nothing in there to suggest why two families being pissed at each other turned into 150 people with tire irons and baseball bats and hitting police chiefs over the da' cookie with said weapons.  Were the 150 divided against each other or just rioting because there ain't shit to do in Marion?

Other than the one in your pants, hon...

I never saw anything in Marion during my time there that led me to believe that the majority of the locals gave two shits one way or another about college football.  What few loyalties I saw demonstrated were to "Da U" because that's where "Da Thugs" play, or to Tuskeegee, or to some non-Atlanta NFL team.  The few college educated people in that town were mostly Judson/MMI faculty and there sure as hell was no Auburn/Alabama loyalty kind of stuff there.  More "saints versus sinners" and such.

Gotta agree with the wench on this one.  I was down there eating at the Shack yesterday when all this was going on.
It was just another Monday in Marion.
