Anyone who has been to the DC and not gazed upon the stone garden (Arlington) has truly missed a humbling experience.

WRONG:

Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May (May 25 in 2009). Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in the military service. First enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War (it is celebrated near the day of reunification after the Civil War), it was expanded after World War I to include American casualties of any war or military action

Maybe poorly worded, but basically correct.  Died in combat/died in military service?  Whatever, it's not "Thank a vet day".   It detracts from the true meaning of the day to include all those that have served, because the day is about those that lost their lives...paid the ultimate price.   Vets have their day too.

I think it is more for people who have served and are now laid to rest. No matter how they passed on.

Veterans day-Is for those that are still alive.

Does it really fucking matter?

The whole idea is to thank those that have served and are currently serving.  I appreciate all members of our armed forces be they alive or dead, for without them I would not be able post on an internet message board.

Quote
Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day because it was a time set aside to honor the nation's Civil War dead by decorating their graves. It was first widely observed on May 30, 1868, to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers, by proclamation of General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of former sailors and soldiers. On May 5, 1868, Logan declared in General Order No. 11 that:
The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet churchyard in the land. In this observance no form of ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit

Sorry to be splitting hairs, but it's for the war dead, or died in military service.  Only in combat?  That was the original intent as I read it.  "War Dead".  Not sure how else to read that.  You?  http://www.usmemorialday.org/backgrnd.html

It may not matter to you, or some others, but that's not the whole idea.  It's a day to honor those that lost their lives.  Pardon me for splitting hairs, but sacrificing one's time to serve, in peace or in combat, is a fuck load short of the sacrifice of fucking dying while doing so!

JMHO, YMMV.

I'm not putting down vets, or saying don't thank them.  Do!

But Memorial Day is for those that gave all!

Well I am a disable Vet-Just got a letter yesterday from VA-getting an extra $250.00 form the govt.

I would send you some-but since it is for taxes, I'd just get it later in my retirement and disability pay.

So I will keep it.

I completely disagree, for I contest that when one enters the miltary they do not know whether they will be called into action or not.  I have never served in the military, but I respect those that have been laid to rest or put their lives on the line for me with the same amount of respect.  Your point to me is asinine.

It would be tough to get a read on how those that died in battle felt about that I'm guessing.

But I see you're point.

This:(http://www.freewebs.com/iraq-videos/4DeadMarines.jpg)
is no different from this:(http://www.snowmobileforum.com/attachments/lounge/616d1098926574-american-soldier-doing-work-.jpg500.jpg)in terms of sacrifice.

From my perspective, When you join the military you understand there will be sacrifices. Obviously, some more than others. Most military members I served with, in peace or hostile situations (Operation Just Cause-1989) were more concerned about their fellow soldiers than themselves. Whether you’re pulling guard duty or ducking rounds, it is all part of your duty. Most members accept that. I will tell you this; it is nice to know you are appreciated.

I can't believe somebody got on here and wanted to start a debate about the intent of this thread. How stupid!

I am a combat veteran that lost a few friends in combat. I try not to think about it all, but I do allow myself to think about them on Memorial Day. Trust me, for those that lost friends in combat, they could use a little pick me up on that day also, because it is a day that usually sucks in a way for the survivors. Many survivors may still be here because one of those lost in combat may have saved their lives. That can be hard to swallow for many living combat vets, especially on Memorial Day.

Those that served during peace time that are no longer with us should not be excluded from our thoughts either. Just because they did not have a conflict during their service does not mean the were any less willing to make that ultimate sacrifice either. They would have went without hesitation, just like those before them and after them that were ordered to go.

Yes, Veteran's day is about all veterans, living and deceased, however, I have no problem with anybody thanking a living combat veteran for their service on Memorial Day, especially for those many living veterans that have sacrificed limbs or even parts of their brain while defending our freedoms. Debating on when the appropriate day to thank them for their sacrifice is a little silly don't you think?

Personally, if somebody does thank me for my service on Memorial day, I tell them that I really appreciate it, but I do tell them there are others whose sacrifice turned out to be greater then mine,  and they are the ones that deserve more thanks then I ever should receive.

As a former military member and member of an Honor Gaurd flight that's participated in quite a few military funerals, I can tell you that Memorial Day exists for ALL members of the military because, while the fallen are honored, the man standing next to you was always willing to take that fallen soldiers place if necessary.  I'm sorry, but if you've raised your hand for your country, carry a weapon and commit to sacrifice yourself for your country, whether it happens or not, you deserve a simple thanks from time to time.  Posting pics of fallen soldiers to snipe a little potshot at someone for disagreeing with your argument is pretty weak.  Sorry.. Just my take on that little deal.

You all have this debate, I'm sure as shit comfortable with thanking anyone that I know has put themselves in the position to protect the things so many take for granted.

I was ready to give this up as it's clear everybody wants to use Memorial Day to just "thank a vet".  You can TELL me the Easter Bunny is real, but that won't make it so.   You can TELL me whatevery you want.  I KNOW what Memorial Day is, and I'm sorry if I feel that some sacrifice, like say DYING, is greater than that of just picking up a weapon and being prepared to die...WHICH I HAVE DONE AS AN INFANTRY SOLDIER, AND A POLICE OFFICER.  (And I don't want any thanks for either as I did both voluntarily)  I, as a fomer service member, can recognize, and set aside a day for those that paid the ultimate price.  Call me fucking stupid for wanting to honor (that means recognize for a certain deed) a select few who fucking DIED in service to their country, and not just lump them in with every swinging dick that picked up a weapon.  You people can make up whatever meaning you want, the day is what it is regardless of what you want it to be.

For many people in this country it is just a day off from work to drink beer and cook out. So if there are some that get it "wrong" and actually think about the military and thank a vet, then I won't split hairs. To argue about this is kinda like a vegetarian getting pissed that they are feeding starving people meat.

No, you are acting like a complete dick about it. Apparently you think everybody is a complete moron and does not know what Memorial Day is about and feel the need to "educate" us idiots. Hey guess what? We all know what the day is for, but to get all pissy about the fact that some also feel the need to also thank a vet during this day is you being ridiculous. Like I said, I am a combat vet who lost friends and you don't see me getting pissed about it like you apparently are.

I freakin' dare you go up to a Vietnam Vet who lost friends and correct somebody who just thanked him for his service on Memorial Day. I I dare you to do it while that Vietnam Vet is still standing there, because you also being a vet or not, I bet he will be in no mood for such nitpicky bs, so you might as well start dialing 911 before you open your mouth.
