Gene Chizik and Bo Jackson form a winning team in charity putt-around
Auburn coach Gene Chizik doesn't really play golf. He putters around. That's what he was doing at the Regions Charity Classic on Thursday morning at Ross Bridge Golf Resort in Hoover.
(Video of Chizik and Bo Jackson, and Charles Barkley's new swing below).

(http://blog.al.com/goldmine/2009/05/medium_GolfSign.JPG) Chizik and Jackson won the celebrity putting competition for Auburn by two strokes or one stroke and some strokes. It didn't matter. They won $5,000 for their charity, Children's Harbor in Birmingham. Alabama won $2,500 for John Croyle's Big Oak Ranch. That was the serious stuff. This little golfing show was strictly for fun.

The Gold Mine is thinking you're going to see more of Bo Jackson around Auburn with this current coaching administration. That's the biggest take of all of this. Jackson is one of the greatest athletes of any generation, a Heisman Trophy winner and was a marketing and advertising phenomenon. But he's been a relatively private person since retiring from pro sports. Auburn could benefit from his presence. He certainly gave an inspiring speech at graduation last Saturday.

He and Chizik seemed to have a good time together Thursday. Jackson, a real golfer, was the best at the putt-around and seemed to have the best time of all.

Chizik said he's never really played the game, or at least not in public.

``I never really found time. I've got three children and a family, and I don't have a lot of time for it. But these events are fun,'' Chizik said.

But there has been an occasional family golfing outing.

``If you come out and watch my daughters and my son and my wife and me play, it's really ugly. But we've attempted it. It's something we have fun with.''

Jonna Chizik smiles about the family golfing excursions.

``Somebody cries before it's over,'' she said with a laugh.

Proof that Chizik can win a championship as long as he has a talented running back on his team.
