Out of the blue yesterday my girl got a bug in her ass about getting a new tv. I did the happy dance inside while maintaining a stoic poker face.
She is doing her research (Consumer Reports, etc) and I promised to solicit some opinions.
So....hit me.
We want 40+" and have no strong preference for LCD vs. Plasme.
Convince me.

The biggest thing for me is the reflection. If you have a really bright room, you may need to go LCD. LCD has gotten better lately. I think Plasma still has the better picture, but if you watch in a bright room, it may not be ideal.

OK, that helps.
Anything else? Does it really matter if I get the 720 or 1080?

The only thing that is broadcast right now in 1080 is blueray. No other HD braodcast even transmit picture in 1080. 720 is what all cable companies broadcast in. Not telling you one way or another, just throwing that out there...

Just a few things for you to ponder:
If you go with an LCD, make sure that you get the 120Hz refresh rate. The plasma screens normally have a 480Hz rate which is better for watching sporting events, but the LCD with 120Hz is good as well.
Blu-Ray is the only thing that you will currently see in 1080p, but the satellite companies are quickly trying to move in that direction. Cable would be further behind them IMO.
LCD screens work better in brighter rooms, and Plasma works better in darker ones in general.

Good info. Thanks.
If I have a ps3/blu-ray player and a 720 picture, is there any discernible difference in the picture? Is it worth the extra $$ to go 1080?

Trying my best not to sound like a consultant...it depends.
If you have a plasma, which naturally has the higher refresh rate, you probably won't see that much difference. If you get an LCD, I would spring for the 1080p with 120Hz refresh.

Yeah, I like the picture on yours, but probably don't need to go that big.

Alright.
In looking around it seems like the 120Hz tacks some substantial beef on the price tag.

That is true. It makes the Plasma a much better value overall IMO.

My new temporary accommodations would be dwarfed by that tv. I'd have to sit, sleep and eat on the motherfucker.

Gracias, sir.
If the 720 will still give a good hi-def picture, then I'm leaning towards that 42" Samsung.

A couple other things to think about to Fau...especially since you already have the PS3... get the 1080p capable set, but invest in some good HDMI cables and Fiber Optic cables for sound... It will probably cost you an addtional couple hundred, but you won't regret it. It's one of those "behind the scenes" expenses you'll appreciate later. Make sure you go somewhere and see picture qualities side by side.... it's an eye opener as it pertains to quality pictures. Judge for yourself, don't just go on price... Also, and lastly, make sure you pay attention to outputs...how many...what type...etc... Does it have a tuner, or speakers?? Don't laugh, a lot of plasma sets are just monitors and require everything for sound AND input sources...
Good luck!!

I have a 1080i plasma, 720p Lcd and a 720p plasma. I can only tell a diffrence in the picture from the Lcd and Plasma. The plasma has the best picture IMO.

Go with the cougar molestor. I have a 1080p Samsung 40" LCD. We have a brightly lit room during the day and it performs well, especially with sports. I am very satisfied with it. Samsung and Sony make the best hi-end TV's out there, and Vizio is starting to compete in terms of the more affordable, quality TVs.
A blueray player on a 1080p TV is unparalleled by anything else out on the market. The picture is almost three-dimensional. You have the player already, so why not get the TV that it's meant to be with? Buying a 720p TV at this point would be like you buying condoms with plans to go out and get laid, but instead you decide to stay home and have an animal balloon making party with them instead. Make your Bluray player happy and get 1080p.
Satellite and Cable companies are eventually going to have go 1080p anyway. Don't forget longevity as a factor...an LCD TV might last long enough to see this day, but a Plasma will probably "burn out" before this day comes.
