Title: Come On Retirement. Hurry up!
Post by: Snaggletiger on November 18, 2024, 03:55:02 PM
Today, we had a girl flat out abandon her job.  Second one in about an 8 month period. We’re a small, mom and pop firm, and normally if we have a full staff, there are 3 ladies who deal with clients and handle cases.  Losing 1/3 of your staff just like that, hurts.

It's been quite the ordeal for us over the last few years.  We went from having a 20 year period with very little turnover, to years of not being able to find anyone who wants to work, or that can work.  I had always heard about the sense of entitlement of today’s younger generation, but we have experienced it first hand, and it’s mind-boggling to actually deal with it.

That’s not to say the problems have been limited to the younger hires we’ve made, because the last two times we went with someone older, both hires that claimed to have prior legal experience, we had to let them both go because they literally couldn’t file alphabetically,  They were both doing things that made you wonder what planet they were from.

However, today marked the 5th hire in the last few years that either walked off the job, or had to be let go because they simply didn’t think they should be asked to work. You go out front, and they’re either on the internet, something I would never do, or had their face glued to the phone.  And when you call them out on it, they would tell you they were caught up, which was a lie, or flat out get offended that you would question them, or expect them to do what you’re paying them for.

A few months back, one girl left for the weekend, and never showed back up.  Not a word.  No call.  No text.  No email, just gone.  Last week, one girl was out the entire week, legitimately sick, as in hospital sick.  The girl who walked off today, was out the Friday before last with a “sick child.”  She texted the office manager on Saturday, saying her kid had some funky named virus, which we found out later is the new, fun name for a common cold. Despite assuring us when we interviewed, that she absolutely had her kids covered if they had to be out of school, or sick or whatever, she was out the entire week, and never once contacted us.  I guess she would come back whenever she was ready to come back.

She showed up today like nothing had happened. We told her we needed to have a talk after lunch, as both me and the other attorney had appointments all morning.  She left at lunch, and told one of the other assistants she probably wasn’t coming back.  She didn’t! 3 weeks ago, her husband had his truck repossessed, and suddenly, they don’t need her income.  My law partner and I agreed today, it’s a good thing that we’re both old and getting close to shutting this puppy down and doing something else. I'm ready.

I can relate.  Totally.

In the last month, I've had one quit because I asked him not to wear a backward baseball cap when on the clock and dealing with students. I "infringed on his ability to express hisself."  I declined to hire one who wore a Tupac shirt with a profanity on it to the interview. I have one who was late to her first four shifts - 10 minutes at best, 45 minutes at worst - and the actual shift is only an hour long.  When I declined to pay her for the day she was 45 minutes late, she quit.  I've got two who consistently show up late (they blame traffic) but they walk in with bags of food which they proceed to eat after they clock in. I've got several who refuse to wear the branded gear I bought them because "they aren't comfortable wearing it."  It's REQUIRED.  And they flat out won't.  I've got two who refuse to work the same shift at the same location because they USED to be best friends and now they hate each other and are involved in some idiotic lawsuit and countersuit deal.

I need to clean house, but it is impossible to find much any better - and believe me I've looked.

^^There it is^^  The number of people we've interviewed over the last few years alone is staggering. We've kind of given up hope at this point, and just want to limp to the finish line with what we've got.

I paid hundreds for an ad on Indeed.  Got probably 200 applicants.

150 of them were not remotely qualified.  Of the 50 who were?  Half didn’t respond to a request for an interview.  10 more made outlandish demands.  10 more couldn’t work the hours that were specified in the posting.  That left 5.  Of those five, we hired one.  She went through two weeks of training and then said she was taking an internship in another state, could she work remotely?

Back to square zero.

Thank you. My people skills are fantastic, and any of you that don't think so, can kiss my broad, white ass.

I used to be addicted to crack but now I am off it and trying to stay clean. That is why I am selling magazine subscriptions.

I'm beginning to wonder if there's some connection between the tireless energy of POTUSDJT and McDonald's. I work with a lady that's 60ish and eats that stuff every day. She is a human dynamo.

Many of us are willing to forego research since voting for Trump automatically labels us science denier's. And while I don't necessarily think your subscription sales will soar, I do believe it's possible to substitute a harmful illicit drug for whatever in the hell McD's is putting in its products.
Exciting times.

Ungrateful part 2-

I have roughly 30 employees.  Most of them are fairly new. Our annual tradition is a “bring your own” dinner on the Thursday before Thanksgiving week.  Done it for five years.

I cook.  Turkey (tender, so kiss my butt), dressing, sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, and a dessert.   They are supposed to bring their favorite - or if they don’t or can’t cook, contribute drinks, rolls, or something.

Starts at 7.  Between 6:30 and 6:45 I get eight cancellations.  “Forgot.  Got to take my friend to the bowling alley…”. Or “I’m just too tired…”. Or “I need to catch up on homework…”.  Or “Im not feeling very social.”

At 7:30 a total of six had shown up.  The other 16 bailed and offered no explanation.

Of the six that came, one made spectacular homemade bread and Buffalo chicken dip.  One brought a box of Zaxbys fingers and bread.  The rest were empty handed.   I had to go to the store to get drinks and rolls.

My staff has been much smaller in past years 10-12 normally.  Never her more than one skip out.

What these ingrates didn’t know was that I intended to hand out bonus checks so they could have Christmas money.  Those checks are now pocketed and I’m considering going Frank Shirley on them.  Also considering canceling Christmas dinner.

We decided against the bonus for 2 of ours.  Well, one took care of that on her own when she abandoned her job.  Still haven't heard a word from her.  She walked out at lunch on Monday without so much as a F You!

Have you considered the hostile work environment that the poor woman works in?

Wes said they should make at least $27 an hour and you’re a capitalist fool if you think that will impact inflation or prices in any way  whatsoever.
