Title: Auburn Has Tight Ends?
Post by: The Six on March 22, 2021, 10:59:31 AM
Picked up on this nugget in a report filed on the Al.coms (https://www.al.com/auburnfootball/2021/03/auburn-spring-football-observations-from-rare-open-practice.html)

Quote
Harsin said at the start of the week that Auburn would be fielding a lot of two-tight end sets, especially early on this spring. That was on display Saturday, with Auburn utilizing a lot of 12 personnel groupings throughout the day and sprinkling in a solid amount of plays from under center.

Auburn is clearly going to be versatile in what it does with its tight end position this season. Both J.J. Pegues and Luke Deal lined up at fullback a few times (and both laid down some solid blocks), while Auburn also had Pegues line up in the slot on occasion. Pegues high-pointed a pass from Nix on a corner route, while Deal made a one-handed grab. The tight end group ran various routes throughout the day, including posts, digs, drags and outs, as well as the corner. Brandon Frazier certainly looks like he’s going to be a mismatch in the passing game, too.

Interesting.

Part-scheme and part-necessity would be my guess.  That OL was ugly.

Six or Seven blocking is better than 5. Joe Gibbs had a good run of 2 TE in the NFL many moons ago. Since everyone is now spread-ish, shotgun 75% of the time maybe going a little more pro-power is the answer.

Looks like Belichik's new strategy, from reading the tea leaves of his recent signings.

Nice to know our offense will go with extra blockers the way jmar said they should. There's strength in numbers said only a general outnumbered by fewer, better prepared soldiers.
Here's hoping for a ground game that sends fear in the hearts of rivals.

Overload the defense, bring in fresh bodies and run it until they stop it. Back just has to hit the seam at the right time or get the max on a cutback. We can do this and improve on it if we are patient. Definitely takes its toll on a defense if you can mix in a few completions in a drive.

I'm a guy that likes to see my team sling it downfield 30 times but if you aren't built that way you have to work with what you have. Might insert a running QB now and then to shake things up. We don't have great run blocking but a sure sign that they are failing (or tired) is when they grab a defender by the head and pull 'em down.
Even Alabama's famous O-line does this like a worn-down heavyweight.
Get that fat bastard off the field!

Sounds like Ja'Varrius Johnson is doing work at receiver.  Co Hargerz has singled him out more than once.  At 5'10" he may be able to play the role of my former man crush, Ryan Davis.  Mr. Johnson comes from up in Buzzy Land.

That's an old H/W.  Coach Pittman put him on a program.

He was hard to catch in the open field.  He may not be the next Onterrio McCaleb, but I truly believe he will be a playmaker.

So, you're saying if I sneeze from my seat in Section 8, Row 44, Seat 9 he won't fall over?

44 rows up may be a little out of his range

He's a keeper then.

Doesn't deserve more than a mention, if that, so I'll put it here.

FUGA receiver and Auburn traitor, George Pickens, likely out for the season with a toe up ACL.

Karma, she is the bitch, no?  Not for him.  I don't wish an injury on anybody. But FUGA can lick my taint.

Guess this means the Jorts Lizards are next to be sacrificed to Tahd come December. Maybe Mullen will wear his Darth Vader mask again.
