Title: Could the unthinkable happen?
Post by: Ogre on November 03, 2008, 11:20:19 AM
What are everyone's thoughts on this weekend?  Is it possible that Auburn does the unthinkable and drops the Homecoming game to UT-Martin?

I admit I don't know shit about UT Martin, but the way we're playing right now, there are no guaranteed wins.

I think that, even as awful as we are, there is no way we lose to UTM.

But...

Fuck it.  Anything's possibly with this suckfest of a season.

We'll win but it'll be ugly. Nobody will be happy with it.

For days now I have been afraid to ask the following question:

Does anyone just how good ut martin is supposed to be?

SKYHAWKS JUMP INTO FIRST PLACE IN OVC FOOTBALL STANDINGS
October 25, 2008

MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Martin has moved into first place in the Ohio Valley Conference football standings with a league record of 5-1 and an overall record of 7-2.

The Skyhawks defeated No. 20 Jacksonville State, 31-30, Thursday night in front of a national television audience on ESPNU. The win combined with Tennessee State's overtime loss to Southeast Missouri State Saturday helped the Skyhawks jump into first place.

Tennessee State and Eastern Kentucky round out the top three teams in the OVC. All three teams have one loss this season.

"We control our own destiny," said Jason Simpson, UT Martin's third-year head coach.

The Skyhawks will not play this week.

The team returns to action Nov. 8 at Auburn. The Skyhawks will also travel to Cape Girardeau, Mo., for a game against Southeast Missouri State Nov. 15. The Skyhawks will close out the season at home, Nov. 22, against Eastern Kentucky.

That is why I did not want to ask that question. Appalachian state would probably tear us a new a-hole at the moment.

No matter how good they are, we'll make them look like worldbeaters.

They have an extra week to "de-cipher" our deadly offense.

Only if they use their backup QB.

They scored more points (87) in one game than we have scored all season.

I can absolutely, to the 100th %, unequivocally guarantee, though, that the winner of this game will be wearing a combination of white, burnt orange, and navy blue.

But hey guys, it's our last game of 2008 to be competitive in.  Let's put our  :box: up.

Bullshit!  One should completely forget about Auburn and Alabama's records year in and year out for the Iron Bowl.  We can be competitive if we are trying to dethrone our bitter rival from their high ranking.  Sure, we'll be a big time underdog, but that's the way I like it.  We win homecoming, lose to Georgia, then beat 'bama.  Shreveport, here we come!

I sure hope so.  I wasn't at an age of cognitive football ability in 1989, but was Auburn in a similar boat as we are this year?  Has there ever been an Iron Bowl where a smudge on the rug upset a top five caliber team?

Auburn finished that season 10-2, not exactly the same situation....But the whole "throw out the record books" argument is bullshit, almost always the favored team wins.

Yeah, but it sure sounds good.  I actually have no empirical data to back it up.  I'd like to see a breakdown of Iron Bowls won by favored teams over the years vs. those that weren't.

I have seen that data, and trust me, it won't help your argument.

And when the favored team lost the record of the favored team would be like 9-1 and the underdog would be 8-2...there hasn't been a 3-8 team beating a 9-1 team in this rivalry or anything similiar.

I hear you.  However, these games are always close.  I'd still like to see who was favored each year, but I'm a retard when it comes to the googles.  I'm not so much trying to argue as I am trying to see how Las Vegas sees these matches year in and year out.

Alabama leads the series 38-33-1.  In the last five years the games have been decided by 10 points or less.  I'm just as ready for this season to be over as the next fan, but I hold out for this game because it would give me immense satisfaction to ruin the turd's sugar bowl dreams (maybe even a national championship).  It's honestly all I have left for this season, besides my planned strong showing for the GA game.

I think this would be a good game to take the family to. Higher percentage of not getting beat. Higher, but not that much higher.

Exactly, but if we lose it might be the first game that has the children comforting their crying fathers....
