Title: Make The Call
Post by: Snaggletiger on September 02, 2020, 12:41:25 PM
Article from 247 gives the ESPN announce teams for this season.  There's very few overall that I dislike.  As long as they do a solid job and don't make it about themselves, I'm usually okay with most of them.  Beth Mowins...do...not...like.  Not because she has titties, her voice just grates on my nerves.

I know most here will disagree, but I was fine with Vern and Gary.  Vern would get a name wrong from time to time but hell, not once in 4 years did Tommy Tuberville ever pronounce Ben Obewonadoo and Devin Aromatherapyshoo correctly.  It was more a matter of hearing those voices and that CBS intro and knowing this was one of the biggest games of the weekend.  Kind of like growing up hearing Keith Jackson calling the big ones.  Anywayz...

ESPN has announced its college football broadcast teams for the 2020 season. Once again, the lineup will be headlined by play-by-play announcer Chris Fowler and color analyst/former Ohio State quarterback Kirk Herbstreit. Maria Taylor will be the sideline reporter for the "A." team.
Also of note, former Ohio State cornerback Dustin Fox will be in his first season as a color commentator for college football games on ESPN2 and ESPNU. For the previous seven seasons, Fox has called games for ESPN3, an online streaming service.
Here is the press release from ESPN:

ESPN will again feature the deepest, most accomplished broadcasting roster in college football during the 2020-21 season with many familiar faces and veteran teams returning to action. More than 20 teams comprised of respected voices, insightful analysts and experienced reporters will cover the season from week 0 through the College Football Playoff National Championship and beyond. This year’s broadcast teams:
Fowler, Herbstreit and Taylor Return for ABC’s Saturday Night Football
Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreit and reporter Maria Taylor will again call the weekly ABC Saturday Night Football marquee matchup. The 2020 season marks Fowler and Herbstreit’s seventh year in the SNF booth and their 25th season as college football partners, having worked together since 1996 on College GameDay. Fowler and Herbstreit have called every College Football Playoff National Championship and they will work their first NFL game together Sept. 14 on ESPN’s Monday Night Football (https://u7061146.ct.sendgrid.net/ls/click?upn=4tNED-2FM8iDZJQyQ53jATUUTZ0Ev92-2FiOpsU115tPJtr7sp3UZYpq1j2FaesYXrJOs5Toakme5SJznPo2QT410T-2BIVIQyN5aI9XHAWms8YcIhOxjPehduOBuLMXns2Q5yiwvCMbTaj1cLZtvXrbuBEI18sN7KfZLFWEmmgMXLdeOuuwwDZ-2FRK1bKoNXfGnipRjTdOZkSt63moeyqfTQDziA-3D-3DToGr_c0KD5HpycqnD9m7Shwm5c5Rc7L-2BdWzjI2dvkBAYfHTyFXagBUWJ3TfihC-2Fv-2FhQtRMrQll4Th1HPO-2FM3UkoOAbcpP0ZwybWUYnppyQBAGNVZj-2BnTNlkGCFY5HpTfEAq3qQ0433Z6mksiMkXxPTvqM-2FPmIDURvkEGsB3HwLZ0KccttNRPOhZvd0Z4X2RkLVnos4T8j0k5ol0SrklmXw-2BfvqwyrRKtxOYl8pGS94Is0fssq4DVGm-2FujJN7PP7jiFf2L6-2FAlk9D6o-2Fe6f-2FahXMaf1MoX5SdD64aNWRip7UwHNZ-2FoJOfumO4htd1MlRxAOFM0Ia90P2N-2FDQGF2SpBlVzH0DCfxQke43wSj1031PSdxkk-3D). Herbstreit recently earned his fifth Sports Emmy award as Outstanding Sports Event Analyst, while Fowler is ESPN’s lead voice for both Grand Slam tennis and college football. Taylor, host of ESPN’s NBA Countdown and NCAA Women’s Final Four studio coverage, has been part of Saturday Night Football since 2017.

McShay Joins McDonough and Blackledge on ESPN Saturday Night Primetime
Sean McDonough (who has a new ESPN extension (https://u7061146.ct.sendgrid.net/ls/click?upn=4tNED-2FM8iDZJQyQ53jATUdy-2BPFEQSTkPjcGaQGM831w-3Dl8sT_c0KD5HpycqnD9m7Shwm5c5Rc7L-2BdWzjI2dvkBAYfHTyFXagBUWJ3TfihC-2Fv-2FhQtRMrQll4Th1HPO-2FM3UkoOAbcpP0ZwybWUYnppyQBAGNVZj-2BnTNlkGCFY5HpTfEAq3qQ0433Z6mksiMkXxPTvqM-2FPmIDURvkEGsB3HwLZ0KccttNRPOhZvd0Z4X2RkLVnos4T8j0k5ol0SrklmXw-2Bfvq5hbigDMwuoy1E5fqZ9Op-2B7VpeygsGjw6YDPvcKUtH7fN41zMWs-2FXqdSs1m1-2By9AucDE55E9tvALa5tFX-2FWfokuKf2eJk-2Fbr6-2Bid7qO0s3MWaTG-2BIHtgPuop7ao388NVktzoyQg-2BTRe71a5Mxig6J50-3D)) and Todd Blackledge return to ESPN Saturday Night Primetime for the third year. They will be joined this season by field analyst Todd McShay, as well as a reporter. Both McDonough and Blackledge have called college football games for more than 20 years, as well as a College Football Playoff Semifinal game together the past two seasons. McShay, a leading NFL Draft analyst, joins the team after working the past four years with Steve Levy and Brian Griese, who moved onto MNF.
Tessitore Returns to College Football with McElroy and Rowe on ABC and ESPN
The voice of Monday Night Football the past two seasons, Joe Tessitore returns to college football where he received widespread acclaim for his calls, especially in thrilling, late-game situations. Tessitore, who previously called College Football Playoff Semifinal games in 2016 and 2017, will partner with analyst Greg McElroy and reporter Holly Rowe on ESPN and ABC Saturday games. McElroy, the former National Champion Alabama quarterback, worked with Dave Pasch and Tom Luginbill the past four seasons. Rowe, one of ESPN’s most beloved reporters, previously worked with Tessitore on ESPN college football and basketball.
Jones and Dvoracek together for the third straight season
Mark Jones and Dusty Dvoracek will work together for the third consecutive campaign. Now in his 30th year with ESPN, Jones will call ESPN and ABC college football games in addition to being one of the company’s leading NBA play-by-play voices. Your world must suck on Fall Saturdays.  (Insert smiley face thingy)

Okay, serious question on V & G.  You echo what people have said on here for years.  In fact, I'm pretty much on an island in giving those two some luke warm, half-hearted praise.  I've never understood the vitriol.  They must have been doing something right to be together all those years on the biggest broadcasts.  I was pissed when they showed them trying to Soulja Boy in the FUGA game, but looking back, the reality was that the whole stadium was doing it and we were getting our asses polished by about 30.  But the most consistent complaint I've heard over the years is claiming they, especially Gary, are Bama hacks.  Of this, I chortle.

It's CBS and ESPN making the decisions to put the Tahd on so much, not the announcers.  And another reality is that it's probably fairly difficult to find something critical to say about a team and coach who only lose once in a blue moon with an orange slice.  It's funny how if you listen to sports talk shows, both locally and Finebaum, every fan, including Bama fans, think Gary Danielson hates their team.  Ask any Bama fan and what you'll get is, "He don't never say nuthin' good bout' Lord Saybinz.  He's just a Barner hack."

You're all V & G haters out there, the whole lot of you.  Lay some knowledge on me about why they sucked so bad.

But Gary can tell you who the 3rd string water boy is for his old buddy Nick.  Or coarch Sabans as the rest of us know him.

I cannot watch Gary call an Auburn game without saying "Shut up Gary" and/or "Fuck you Gary" at least a couple dozen times.

***Warning - BIL Story***

2010 Iron Bowl and Casa de Snags was Game Day Central for family and friends alike.  Bama had already lit up the board a couple of times and was driving again when Nick Unfairly broke through and sacked the QB.  The ref drops some laundry and calls an excessive celebration penalty.  (More on that later)  BIL loses his shit. He jumps up and starts stomping through the den.

CELEBRATION?????  What the hell is this ref doing?  CELEBRATION???  $%&#'ING piece of %$*&.

He starts walking up the stairs.

CELEBRATION????  %$#* OF A MOTHER %$#*^&

We hear him on the second floor.

CELEBRATION????  Never in my $%&*^# life have I seen such ^%$*& dumbass %$*&

All of a sudden, he appears from the kitchen behind us.  There's no other way down except the one flight of stairs in front of all of us.

That %$&*#^ called CELEBRATION????

We all look at each other.  Wait....how did you.....You were just....

I cancelled my sports package, This season is a bust anyway and then being preached to about my white privilege and the deep suited racism I have. Plus it is only a matter of time before the BS from the NBA and NFL make it to the fields/uniforms of college football.

And let's face it, too expensive to go to games anyway.

Verne, especially in his later years, provided nothing but a toad-face and some half-recollected stories of the glory days.

Gary can't get anyone's name, play or fucking jersey number correct.  He's dumber than school bus full of remedial bammers.

Except for all 105 players and 115 coaches on the roster in Tuscaloosa.

Speaking of Eli Gold, there's been many a time over the years while on the way to, or coming back from the Planez, I've tuned into the Bammer station to find out what's going on.  Once I find it, I might drive another 25 miles before I even know who has the ball. Gold will drone on with some useless, rambling story about some quarterback's dad.

"....and he was well known for cooking Carolina style barbecue, and he had this sauce.....that's thrown high and incomplete.....but he used a lot of molasses and cinnamon, which gave it a real sweet flavor.  And when he would cut up the meat.....up the middle for about a 4 yard gain.....that'll bring up a punting situation.....but the meat would be so tender after smoking overnight and the punt is fair caught at the 37.

We'll take this timeout. This is the Alabama Radio Network.

Auburn Iron Bowl wins aside, I think my favorite calls from him were when Northern Illinois beat them and when ULM beat them.

I never liked Verne in any sport and thought he was terrible with names and with overall knowledge of sports. But I e always thought Gary is knowledgeable and brings playing perspective to the game. Like Todd Blackledge, I enjoy him.

However that’s not always the case. I e never liked that other dick head that played at PENN state and was a pro guy. He’s one dumb as a box of rocks. Gary and Todd know their stuff, imo.

Look, I’m mentally challenged for good reason. I was thinking of Deirdorf I think. That did the pro games. He’s a prick.

Really cool of you to point out my brain issues. That’s classy.

I have some memory and intellectual issues, sure. But here’s the thing, I can remember most of the major happenings in my life and I’m thankful for that.

I can remember my wedding ceremony, the birth of my children and the first rusty trumbone that you ever gave me at the 231 truck stop.
