Title: Defensive Line Depth
Post by: wesfau2 on August 06, 2017, 10:17:59 AM
Was perusing the practice reports and stumbled upon the latest depth chart.  The DL, in particular, stood out to me:

1st Team: Marlon Davidson, Derrick Brown, Dontavius Russell, Jeff Holland
2nd Team: Nick Coe, Alec Jackson, Byron Cowart, Paul James III

That's 8 competent/quality bodies you can sub in and out at will.  Coupled with dramatically improved LB play, I expect this defense to return possession to our offense at a greater pace than in prior seasons.  Three-and-outs and/or turnovers should be the rule rather than the exception.

Additional offensive possessions = more plays run = more scoring.  Defense = offense = Gus in his happy place.

I'm not raising any banners yet.  But the key to 2010 and 2013 was the ability to rotate the DL in and out without dropping in ability.  It let us corral Manziel. Break gingers in half. Fuck up some ducks. Those were also the seasons where if we got the ball with 13 seconds left in the half at our own eight yardline I expected to score.

Agree.

Andrew Williams behind Freshman Alec Jackson?

BTW, our D's in both 2010 and 2013 were just a notch above suck.  Last year's and this year's were and will be significantly better than those.

2010 a notch above suck?
The d as a whole, I'll give you. But the d line wasn't too shabby. I don't remember how many made NFL with Fairley but I believe at least one more. We weren't easy to run on.

That's what I said.  They gave 24 or more 9 times.  4 times they gave up 30+.  It wasn't a very good defense.  However, they were senior dominated and took care of business when it counted.  Plus, they had the dirtiest, most disruptive player in the game. People can say Cam was the sole reason AU wins the MNC.  We don't sniff it without Unfairley.

Yeah, well the thread topic was DEFENSIVE LINE. Not the D as a whole.

Dumbass.

Listen numb nuts.  If I want to change the entire direction of a thread, that's what's going to happen.  If I decide we will now start talking about sexy Russian babes looking for love and how you can get in touch with them now at www.backdoorrussiangirls.com then by Gawd, that's what we're going to discuss.

Oh, and steer clear of Svetlana Rotchacokov.  Trust me, you'll regret that one.

What about those morons that run from city to city? Fuck is their problem?

We can talk about those assholes too, if you want.  Jeezus, who in their right minds decides to run 30 miles to another city when they have a perfectly good, well maintained vehicle to get them there in a matter of minutes?  Huh?  And here's the kicker.  When they get there and their shopping is done, they suddenly realize they have to get home.  Apparently, someone didn't think that far in advance.

Now throw back a 5 Hour Energy, get your dumb ass back on the road and run 30 miles back to the State line.

We can get ends, always have.
Where we have struggled in the past is recruiting tackles especially in talent rich Georgia.
X members tend to lump DTs and DEs all in as just linemen.
Yes you!

I'm not as concerned now with Steele. He might go the JC route occasionally or convert an end to the inside but moreso as a last resort, not just settling.

Amen

But the Dline in 10 and 13 did not suck. The linebackers and corners? Absolutely.

Defense doesn't win Auburn championships.  The quarterback does...it's an open discussion.

Stidham verses the rest.

What'd I miss?

Someone suggested that Davidson had been carted out of practice.

No substantiation of it anywhere, so I took it down.

If you start doing this on every post on here, there won't be anything left.

Not that it's necessarily a bad thing.

He was held out of scrimmage today according to Bryan Matthews.

My hope is that Gus holds the entire defensive backfield out of scrimages so we can try to keep quality on the field throughout the season.
We seriously lack depth here and beyond our first 5 or 6 we are hurting.
It's an empty hope but this is the weakest part of the team.

It's a wonder these guys can even take hits in games as much as contact in limited by Gus. Ever wonder why it seems to take us a few games to get the thing moving in the right direction? Maybe the lack of actual football during football practice. My 2 cents.

Look man. We don't have a lot of medical redshirts left!

The SEC adopted the rule of only 3 contact/thud practices during any preseason week.  I believe that is cut down to one day a week during the season.

All I know is you get a high profile receiver to tangle with while you're also expected to stop a runaway Fournette. There can't be a tougher position to play.

Next thing you know these guys will want to get paid.
