Title: Five things
Post by: Kaos on July 29, 2017, 05:10:43 PM
I'm having trouble again. My motivation for this season just isn't there. I feel like I'm in one of those relationship lulls where I still love her but it would be okay if I didn't see her as much.

Maybe I just need some hope that tomorrow will be different than yesterday.  With that in mind here are five things I want to see this year.

1) No quarterback shuffle.  Pick one and ride it.  Pick one early. Don't waffle around.
2) Less second and 11.  Everybody in the stadium knows play #1. Read option to the right side.  One yard loss.  Mix it up when it's not working.
3) Adjustments. Terry Bowden, for all his faults, was a master at coming up with a better plan for the second half if the first didn't go well. We currently seem to have only one plan.  If it isn't hitting we either keep hitting our head against the same wall or we panic and go full retard.
4) Better passing design.  I've seen plays where we needed eight yards and only had one receiver in a route. I want crossing routes, posts, curls, digs, slants, screens.  Give me the whole tree.
5) Short yardage answers. Third and two or less should be nearly automatic. First and goal cannot be a cavalcade of field goals. Quit freezing up.

That would satisfy me.

Agree with almost all of this and would add the glaringly obvious point that we need to avoid having Hawkeye, Hot Lips and Radar setting up shop on the sidelines.  The injury situation was a significant contributor to last season's outcome.

Do not agree with the apathy, however.  I'm expecting this to be a fun year and there's enough uncertainty in the West to open the door for a shot at Bama for the divisional title.

Number D is where I'm really hoping Lindsey really brings some changes to the table.  Last year, I had 2 HS coaches tell me if AU got down a few scores and had to start flinging it around, they'd be lucky to get a couple of first downs because Malzahn's passing schemes were Junior High at best.  Works fine if the run game is on and defenses have to respect that first.  If not, then Pfffffffffttt....

To echo Wes' comment, stay relatively injury free and I think we're pretty darn skippy.

Well.... we're fucked already.

http://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/20213624/auburn-tigers-coach-gus-malzahn-says-qb-competition-good-thing

AUBURN, Ala. -- Auburn coach Gus Malzahn boils his latest quarterback battle down to one determining factor: Who gives the Tigers the best chance to win?

While former Baylor starter Jarrett Stidham seems like the front-runner, Malzahn hasn't counted out incumbent Sean White. Either way, the Tigers are banking on improved quarterback play after dropping 16 games over the last three seasons.

"It's a good competition and there's nothing better than competition," Malzahn said after Monday's first practice of fall camp. "It just brings out the best in everybody. That's a really good thing right now, I think."

As long as there is no competition for play calling we should be able to win.

There is no way in this world that SW is better than JS.  I like SW, good kid tough and has a lot of heart but let's be serious here.  You don't land a player lie JS and make as big a deal as the coaching staff has made about landing him just to let him send in plays or hold a clip board.  I hope Gus has sense enough to let this "battle" ride out for no longer than two or three weeks before he names JS starter so he can get as many reps with the 1st team as possible.

I liked Neil. He wasn't bad.

He just wasn't CAM. And to his credit, he saw it. It's hard to accept when someone is better than you when you think its your turn up. Didn't he hold the winning FG?

Ans lets not get ahead of yosef on Stidham. He may be the shit. But until he gets his ass handed to him by an SEC defense and bounces back up, I will be cautiously optimistic. I was at the A-Day game and he looked good. But he also had a LOT of time to throw the ball. I think in this offense, SW might have looked good also.
Either way, we got two damn fine QBs. I'm hoping either one does great and stays healthy all season long.
But don't count that White boy out just yet.

Look Stidham may be the second coming of Jesus, but I don't trust Gus, I have been lead down that rabbit hole before.  Only to find out the rabbit done butt fucked me and stole all my lunch money.  (I was more upset he never called).

I know that Sean White can win ballgames in the SEC.  I am pretty positive that Stidham will as well, but until I see a couple of games under his belt.  Like CCTAU said I will refrain from calling him a Heisman Trophy winner, sufficed to WE!!! splooging all over him.

I will also happily eat a bunch of crow if he ends up in New York the second weekend of December.

We know they can hand off to Pettway. So I am sure practice right now is nothing but an air show.

I've said several times that if you could assure me that White would be healthy for the entire season, I'd be pretty pumped about this season.  I quit reading anything into Spring games a long time ago, especially when it comes to the QB.  If you're half way competent, you can stand there and make most of the throws without any pressure on you.  The one thing I took from watching Stidham is that he absolutely throws the purdiest passes I've ever seen at AU.  Quick release, accurate, and great touch on every throw.  But who knows what that will look like when Arden Key is bringing his 6'6" ass off the corner with bad intentions in Baton Rude?

The good thing is we at least have a body of work to look at with both these guys.  When Sean is healthy, we good. When Stidham got his shot at Baylor, he good.

The reason I have a lot of hope for a good season is...

No matter who is in at QB, they will be able to hand it off a lot to the Mack Truck we all know as Kamryn Pettway.  The key will be throwing enough PA passes and deep shots to keep the defenses honest.  Passing yards will be gravy.

THIS is why I'm glad we get the GA Southern warm-up game.

I know this is not what anyone wants to hear, but considering that that is our opener and Clemson is 2nd, it actually makes strategical sense to play QB carousel THIS time. Gives them another variable to game plan for.

That being said, I would hope the "true" #1 (*coughStidhamcoughcough*) is getting all of his regimen of reps with the 1s at practice.

SIAP.  Wait, no I'm not.  This piece from 7-24 on the dot  I am a gay twerker that has no balls!!!!  I also have no idea how to use the quote function to post stories, so I annoy the piss out of others.  I like male genatalia in and around my mouth. is why you can't count out White.  Actually, I just enjoyed the fact that they said ass three times in it.

Ken Mastrole expects these types of answers from Sean White.

"I've just got to go out and do it again," White said matter-of-factly to Mastrole recently. "I'm ready to go."

The redshirt junior understands that Jarrett Stidham is widely viewed as the favorite to win Auburn's starting quarterback job after joining the program in January. White has told people close to him he thinks the Baylor transfer is a very good quarterback.

But he is plenty confident in his own ability, feels he's grown from starting 16 games the last two seasons and believes he has what it takes to win the starting job. He's already looking forward to competing with Stidham when the Tigers begin fall camp in August.

"People shouldn't write him off at all," said Mastrole, White's long-time private quarterback coach. "He's a super competitive guy, one of the more competitive guys that I've ever been around, like one of those guys that you could kick his ass and he's going to get up and keep coming back at you. He's just a quarterback that brings something to the table that people, even since high school, they just know he's got that dog in him. And he's also dead-ass accurate."

"He's a guy that's very sharp, a relentless worker and very creative. I think he's a superstar. Whatever his goals are, whether it's to be at a top-10 college football program or a general manager in the NFL, wherever Patrick sets his sights, I have full confidence he's going to reach his goals. He's that special of a guy."

The situation is great for Auburn.

There aren't many other schools around the country with two quarterbacks as collectively talented as Stidham and White. Either way, the Tigers will have a backup that could be starting at other programs around the country.

Stidham showed his talent during Auburn's spring game, throwing for 267 yards despite only playing one half. White proved himself to be an efficient SEC quarterback last year before suffering a separated shoulder in a win against Ole Miss in October.

Auburn was 6-1 last season in the seven games White was healthy and played from start to finish. In those seven games, the former four-star recruit completed 71.5 percent of his passes (103 of 144) and threw eight touchdowns with just one interception.

White is now back healthy after being limited throughout the spring while recovering from the broken forearm he suffered early in Auburn's Sugar Bowl loss to Oklahoma. In addition to rehabbing and learning new offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey's offense, White has been focusing on getting bigger and stronger. He is up to 215 pounds after being listed last year at 200 pounds.

Though White only took part in 7-on-7 and 1-on-1 drills this spring, Tigers coach Gus Malzahn said of White on Wednesday, "You can tell he's improved."

Even after starting 10 games last year for the Tigers, White enters fall camp as the underdog. There isn't anywhere near the hype for White that there's been for Stidham this offseason. Former Baylor safeties coach Cris Dishman told AL.com Stidham is a "taller Drew Brees." Trenton Kirklin, Stidham's private coach, said he expects "nothing short of a championship and a Heisman" for Stidham's time at Auburn.

White doesn't have Stidham-like size or arm strength.

His strengths? Being "dead-ass accurate," as Mastrole said, along with mental toughness and a knack for thriving in big spots after being doubted.

Mastrole referenced three situations.

In 2013, White was named MVP of the Elite 11 quarterback camp over players such as former Clemson star Deshaun Watson, ex-Notre Dame standout DeShone Kizer and the top-ranked pro-style quarterback in their recruiting class (Kyle Allen). "Nobody wanted him at the Elite 11, and we're standing on a table trying to get him in," Mastrole said. "And then it was like 'OK, we're going to let him in,' and he wins the whole thing."

White was then MVP of the Under Armour All-American Game in January 2014 after being merely a replacement selection for the event.

Then, last year, White was widely overlooked in an Auburn quarterback competition that pitted him against a much-hyped junior college transfer in John Franklin III and then-senior Jeremy Johnson. White ended up winning the starting job and helped Auburn win six straight games following a 1-2 start before a November loss to Georgia during which the shoulder injury clearly limited White.

"I've been around a lot of quarterbacks," Mastrole said, "but he's always been one that you see his history and he's always been a winner, a last minute, chip on the shoulder kind of guy."

That's why White said what he did to Mastrole during that recent conversation, "I've just got to go out and do it again."

And he's also dead-ass accurate."

he's six foot nothing. You are right here Sean is a shorter QB, but there are guys that have succeeded despite being vertically challenged.

he's frail. 310lb lineman and 260lb linebackers have a tendency to make you so, talk to the line.

arm strength concerns...seems he puts all his might in yardage that doesn't require it. Shoulder seperation

lot of his passing yards come from screens and bubbles.  Sean doesn't call the plays, and you and I both know our WR's have been shit in running routes. I think this has changed.

don't trust his deep throw. Shoulder seperation

That last sentence is what I'm tired of. Yes we want someone that can give us the last minute win, but I as an AU fan am tired of that being an every week thing.  Give me a qb that will put us up and keep us up in the majority of games.  I believe we can win with both, but I want to win without having a stroke every game.  I was a Sean White fan last year and I still am. He's like a blue collar kind of qb. But compared to the white collar Stidham, he's not as refined.  I want to see what the Stidham can do.

Sufficed to my arguments on here, I do actually think Stidham is probably more talented than Sean and will most likely become a better statistical Auburn Quarterback long term. I just don't know if that equates to this year.

Sean is a Junior in a system and we have seen many QB's mature and continue to get better as they get older.  Sean's downfall IMO has been his lack of good play calling and his susceptibility to injury.

Again I just refuse to get caught up in the hype over a kid that looked good in our spring game or against Big 12 opponents.  If he is our QB and does awesome ...fanfuckingtastic!  I just want to win.

Granted, that wasn't murderer's row by any stretch.  And I think we could have handled LSU a good bit better if Malzahn didn't have his head up his ass and gave them a better plan/play calling. I just think it shows we had the ability to score in bunches with a healthy White man at the helm.

Again, I don't give a rat's bung-hole who starts as long as they're the best of the 2.  If it turns out that Stidham is that much better than White, all the better for AU.

Damn that isn't how this works.

Shoulder separation...my previously injured blinders were not on.  I looked at him as being healthy, injury free, but given his previous injury it furthers my concerns.

All Division 1 QBs face similar sized defensive players.  QBs differ as well in their skeleton vulnerability.

I'll give you play calling; however, what about arm strength and the ability to throw long yardage...if (and a big if) the coaches felt the same way the playbook is designed to rely on the strengths not weaknesses.

You know that metal plate in my head? I had to have it replaced, cause every time Catherine revved up the microwave I'd piss my pants and forget who I was for a half hour or so. So over at the VA they had to replace it with plastic. It ain't as strong so I don't know if I should go sailin down no hill with nothing between the ground and my brains but a piece of government plastic.

Exhibit A:

The 30 yard passes are what is concerning. There were some decent throws, but in my opinion, a lot of the longer throws are inaccurate, and lack touch and accuracy.

Exhibit B:

(I know, I know...competition. But that aside) Love his touch. Love the arm strength to get in the tight windows. Love his accuracy on the deep throws. Love his quick trigger throwing the ball. Love his footwork. Love his pump fake ability or ability to hold on to the ball after he starts his throwing motion. Looks good on the keepers. Just looks the damn part. Stidham for Heisman!

I was there. I saw some beautiful passes by Stidham. I also didn't see him getting jacked up after his hurried release.

SW, while missing on some damn good passes, stood in there and delivered a lot.
With a second more, maybe he hits the ones he missed. With a better route tree, maybe he throws to more open guys. And don't forget, our two brick handed seniors are gone.

It will be fun to watch. If SW starts, I'm OK with that. If he doesn't, I'm OK with that  too!

I just recall Todd in '08 and most thinking he was a washout with his injured shoulder. White didn't play banged-up or with mere soreness as coaches like to say. Most of the bad form imo grew from trying to minimize the pain, never out of fear.

Agree the new tree should make Kodi's group more effective and hopefully the offense resembles the '09 season where we sprayed the ball around and leaned on Ben Tate.
