Title: Tad Cummins
Post by: Kaos on April 25, 2017, 07:12:41 AM
I know that what the guy did was wrong.  As the father of a teen girl I'd be pissed if my daughter ran off with one of her teachers.  But....

I object to the characterization as a whole.  The most recent article on al.com about this incident contains the words kidnapping and abductor.  Other pieces celebrated her "being found safe" and "unharmed."  Others contained pleas from her family (who looked like a bunch of hillbilly dumbasses) to "brang our baaybee back safe"

Yes, it was wrong for them to run away but the girl went willingly.  She most likely participated in the planning of the escape.  Maybe she's only 15, but I just don't get the characterization of her as a helpless victim.  They somehow became infatuated with each other to the point both were willing to risk their futures and his career.  It's not like he was some kidnapper lurking in the bushes who snatched her off the street.  If I had to make a guess, she was an aggressive teen from a dysfunctional family who saw him as stable and strong.  She wanted the safe, secure life he had and he wanted to take care of her. She wanted to get away from her family. It spiraled sideways from there.

That's fine, but at what point to you allow kids to make decisions for themselves without an adult being able to take advantage of them? 15 is still young. And I agreed with you until this:

At 15, you don't think about risking your future or making life decisions...this is why they need to be protected and not treated like adults.

And another thing, do you know how easy it would be to manipulate a 15 year old girl if you wanted to? I would imagine it wouldn't take much, especially if you are in a mentor type role...

I'd be ok with it if I was 15 and this was my teacher

Yes.  I do know.

I know how a kid that age, particularly one with difficult or indifferent parents can confuse the care and attention a teacher gives him or her for something else.

I also know that there are some 15 year olds who are not innocent little children.  Not their fault necessarily. This girl was one of ten children.  Her mother can't have any contact with her because she is/was accused of beating her.

Look at this bunch of rubes.

The girl second from left looks like she just got through killing somebody.

I understand he made the wrong decision.  What I object to is the bullshit about Amber alerts, that she was in danger, went through some ordeal or whatever.

I know these kind of kids.  There's ZERO chance she was taken against her will.  If I had to guess, she was involved in the planning and most likely she pushed for it.  Yes, yes, yes, he should have said no. I get that. He shouldn't have allowed himself to be in a position where that kind of delusional thinking was possible.  But the whole "we found her and rescued her from this kidnapper" bullshit is misguided.  That's all.

If I had a son who was 15? I'd congratulate him and ask if her mom was single or looking.

I do find this interesting:

Alabama The age of consent is sixteen. With parental consent, parties can marry at age fourteen. However, this parental consent is not required if the minor has already been married. (Other statutory laws apply.) Common law marriage is recognized.

Elizabeth was stoic, authorities said, and showed no signs that she was happy she was going back to her life in central Tennessee. "She didn't act like a rescued person would act," her father said.

No shit, dumbass.  She wasn't "rescued."

I don't know why this is pissing me off.
