Tigers X - Number one Source to Talk Auburn Tigers Sports

Had a client/friend come in today and being the AU grad and former walk-on for the Tigahs he is, naturally the conversation turned to sex...err, Auburn football. His biggest issue with where the program is now and has been, well, forever, is consistency or the lack thereof. I told him to keep preaching to the choir as this has probably been one of the most talked about subjects on our board this season. Rollercoaster of love.
He brought up a stat that I hadn't heard or thought about. (If it was discussed on here, it went over my head, like most things) He said there were only two coaches in AU history that had back to back 10 win or more seasons. To be fair, they only went to 11 games around the time Dye was coming on board, I believe. On the other hand, I don't recall anyone but Dye doing that. Amarite? Don't know. Either way, that further cements the notion that we can never get to the upper level and stay there for any real length of time.
My buddy also said he believes one of the biggest factors is that we as fans don't demand it. We seem content overall with the occasional rise to the top and inevitable fall from grace soon after. As much as he hated using the unwashed as an example, he's not far off in saying that fan bases like those of the Tahd and THE Ohio State University, think it's their birth right to be at the top of the college football world each and every year...and will settle for nothing less. Which is why both sold their souls to Lord Saybinz and Urban Miyah. I don't want to be them. But I do think we should expect more.
Personally, I've long since stopped getting overly worked up about it. I love it, follow it religiously, I'm passionate about it. But, if we lose, the sun still comes up in my world. I just really think for what we pay Malzahn and all our assistants and the money that's poured into facilities, promoting the program etc. the results should be far more...well....consistently competitive. This not a fire Gus take on my part. I want the guy to kick it in high gear. I want our win over the Faggies to be the start and the momentum to build this weekend by beating the ever-lovin' fuck out of Georgia. Me and Jim will be there doing our part. But, what's your take on what this program needs to be a 10 win minimum team just about each and every year?
Fire Gus and clean house?
Change assistants...which ones?
A different attitude from the fan base?
Get rid of Jacobs?
Go find the next Nickurban Sabanmeyer?
What's your take?
Semi-rational responses only, please.

Get rid of Jacobs?
Who do you think the PTB would replace him with? David Benedict? Rich McGlynn? Scott Carr? Would be more of the same I'm afraid.

Just throwing it out there as something some have said is the answer. Not a suggestion. How about input?
-
Just like anything else in this life, you have WANT IT. Sure there are the usual cop outs, but the 2002 Iron Bowl always comes to mind. It takes "work, hard work." It takes a sellout and win at all cost attitude. It takes perseverance.
To me, cutting Duke loose helped 100%. We have everything we needed to win out the remaining games, and carry that over to next season.
Gus needs to get his head out of his ass and make the right calls. BOOM mf is doing an outstanding job. This all falls on our genius head coach and his ability to make the right calls

Jacobs is the problem.
He's not an AD. Never was. He's a ticket hustler who goobled on enough dicks to get promoted to a place where he is completely incompetent and also beholden to people who may have their hearts in the right place but are dumber than two dozen fucks.
When Saban came to Alabama he got one thing right. He got everybody on the same page. His way or no way. He forced all the good ol' boy yuck-it-ups into the background and forced the entire operation to run like a business. Like a ruthless business. There are no positions that are given to people for political or personal reasons.
There's no emotion. Everybody has a job to do and everybody is held 100% accountable for doing that job.
I don't like him. I don't like what he represents. But that is how things are done. I know from my own business experience that hiring a no nonsense business manager was the best decision I ever made. We're effective. We're productive. Everybody knows exactly what they are supposed to do, no questions. If they don't, they know there are consequences. I didn't run things that way and I should have. I would have been happier and didn't even know it.
Jacobs won't get rid of the good ol' boy yuck-it-ups because he IS one. That's ALL he is. Gus (or the next coach or the next or the next) will never have the power to do whatever he wants. There's ALWAYS somebody lurking around. Jacobs' dumb ass is prowling the fucking sidelines at almost every game. When was the last time you saw the Bama AD standing there eyeing Saban and registering satisfaction or displeasure with his body language. But there Jacboobs is. Him and his entourage of suckups. If we want to be that kind of program, Jacobs has to face into the background. But he won't. He's in love with himself.
He probably thinks he's a businessman. But listen to the yahoo speak. He's a fuckerstunt.

We can win consistently if we keep reloading the lines of both the offense and defense.
Game is won in the trenches. Run it, stop the run-that simple.
It rarely comes down to a couple of plays or gametime adjustments.
And it's where our loses occur, especially the runaways ie. UGA last season, LSU in October.
If Muschamp hangs around a few seasons Auburn will play winning football on defense.
That hasn't happened for almost a decade.
This will have Auburn winniing 10 games per year. Replacing Jacobs will not.

This "game is won in the trenches" is actually a pretty novel idea jmar has come up with. It may catch on.

THIS....all of it.
Gus isnt the issue. From Tubs all the way to Gus, there has been one common trend - Jacobs. Fire Gus, and he will replace him with another guy who will have the same issues. Gus can coach. He keeps us out of trouble. He's generally a nice guy. Can be stubborn at times but he's learning. I have no issue with him generally speaking. The issues he has as HC are not THE issue.
THE issue is that we as fans are content with Jacobs and his ways. And are often to take our frustration out on whoever the HC is. Jacobs is a snake oil salesman and many of our fans buy his load of sht. So much that they point their finger at anyone BUT him when things go wrong. Gus is having to coach and work through issues in spite of Jacobs' sorry ass.
Baird, Etheredge, even McGlynn? Any would be better.

We win in sprite of that dysfunctional money grubbing shit head. What K said, the constant lurking and breathing down your neck. Its because we are a loyal fan base and a special place in general. Our players know it, and our coaches know it. Get Jacobs out of the way, and the sky is the limit. But until the President or Board sees him as an issue, he is going nowhere.

I don't WANT to be bama/osu/etc.
Fuck them and their shitty attitudes.
I'd love some UGA-like consistency, but not at the expense of the exhilaration of '04, '10 and '13.
It's the occasional lows that make the highs so sweet.
It's a game...enjoy it.

I'd say that your AU penis tattoo and the war eagle on the ass cheeks mean that you're a little more than passionate about it.

That's the problem. I don't any more.
Maybe it's Bama fatigue. Maybe it's all the changes Jacobs has presided over. Maybe it's the corporatization of "the Auburn experience." Maybe it's the new jumbomaxizoomdweebietron.
But it's not fun like it used to be for me. I don't enjoy it.

It's the pricing out the regular guy that wants to come to one game.

I'm getting to that point too. I would make sure I arranged my activities on game day so that I would be able to watch the Tigers. Now, if I catch it, I catch it. If not, no big deal. I use to take my kids to a game each season. Haven't done that in about three years now. Hell, I can't afford to anymore.

Nailed it. Taking my family to an Auburn game becomes a $1500 weekend.

Whatever. Do you know how much limo rides from Dothan to Auburn are these days? Oh, and for the Ole Miss game, I requested Chivas Regal Royal Salute, 50 year old. You think the limo company had it in there? Of course not. We settled for The Mcallan 50 year old.
Things keep going up while service continues to decline.

At least the price of your DCP stays about the same.

For the one game this year that we were thinking about coming to: Ole Miss (before our meltdown)
Cost
Airfare 339.00 each (Avg) $678.00
Rent a-car 125.00 weekend $125.00 Mid-size or above (not much keenness)
Hotel 315.00 a night (taxes included) $630.00 Best western (Opelika)
Game Tickets $150.00 each $300.00 Good seats
Food and drink $250.00 (both)
New AU stuff $150.00
Right at $1900.00 for a freaking weekend. Most of these prices are before the season cause we have to book all of it in advance by about 2 months. I hate that I feel this way but the way the season has unfolded I feel like I save $1900.00.

That's just because your driver charges more on the weekends.

You have to admit.....3/4 of that cost is because you made the choice to live almost 1000 miles from your game of choice. Your airfare, hotel and rental car isnt on Auburn.
The tickets and concessions, sure.
-
I guess I just have trouble relating. Is $1,500-$2,000 really that much money?
My God, you people are poor.

I feel like we've had this discussion before...you are doing it all wrong.
I'm not sure why you don't drive. 10hr drive? Gas will cost you 1/8th of the airline and rental car cost.
you probably spending at least 10 hours on getting to and from the airport, arriving early for security, hassle with rental car, in the air etc...
and i'm not sure how many AU bicycling leotards one can own. so you can cut cost there in Auburn gear.

Not arguing that point, Long way away but lets see how many have that same feeling when Auburn plays The O out here.
I'll be renting a room in case someone wants to book early.

Expensive, sure. But it's nothing Auburn did to price anyone out. Not the bulk of that cost anyway.
You really need to learn how to either: drive or make travelocity/Priceline your friend.
If you were willing to stay a few more mins away, you could save yourself some dough because you are paying way too much for that hotel room.
-
I feel like we've had this discussion before...you are doing it all wrong.
I'm not sure why you don't drive. 10hr drive?
We have a weekend to do this, we leave on Friday come back on Sunday. Driving would then be 20 hours of a 48 hour weekend. Plus having to drive back hung-over.
We get to the airport one hour before flight, we know DFW airport and we know ATL airport, getting in and out of those is easy for us.
Yes, 3/4 of the weekend are personal choices, but its also coming home, seeing familiar places and faces.

Not blaming Auburn, the cost of everything factors in. We looked at staying in the Valley, PC or Columbus. If we took an extra day that would be an option, short time there I wanted to be as close as possible.
Edit: I am not blaming anything on anybody and I am not bitching about anything. The price has been steadily going up over the last 10 years. I think in 2005 when we came back our total out of pocket expense was about $950.00 to $1000.00.
Each year we have to decide if we want to spend the cost of coming back.
Shit happens
-
Just buy season tickets...then sell the other games and you can more than make up the money you spend on the
weekend costs gear.

I'm staying at the new Embassy (I blv) regardless, it's a suite and much more room than we could ever use. Separate bedrooms and bath. So, you are more than welcome to sleep in the bed of my new pickup truck in the parking lot, if you'd like.
