Title: More ESPN Hippo-Krassy
Post by: Snaggletiger on July 27, 2015, 10:40:06 AM
Debated on where to put this since he was referencing baseball, but since Cowherd talks all sports, dropped it in here.  Never been a huge fan or hater of Colin Cowherd. Sometimes he's funny and entertaining and others, you want to choke him out.  Probably means he's doing his job. But the following are the comments that got him "fired" after 12 years at ESPN.  Cowherd was making his case that baseball just isn't that complex, given that a General Manager with no experience can step in the dugout and manage a MLB team. He was giving examples of how the nine guys on the field might be from 6 different countries, many of which aren't too high on the edumecation totem pole.  As always, the PC Police were listening and made a mountain out of a mole hill and the Tweeterverse blew up. And ESPN quickly followed by dropping the hammer on Cowherd and sent him packing.  Never mind that he had already turned in his walking papers.  Anywho...

It's baseball," Cowherd said Thursday. "You don't think a general manager can manage? Like it's impossible? The game is too complex? I've never bought into that, 'Baseball's just too complex.' Really? A third of the sport is from the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic has not been known in my lifetime as having world-class academic abilities. A lot of those kids come from rough backgrounds and have not had opportunities academically that other kids from other countries have."

Maybe not the best choice of words given today's PC climate, and singling out the DR was most likely what did it. But he did actually follow up the next day with stats from four different sources placing the DR in the bottom of the education barrel.  Is the reaction over the top or just what we've come to expect these days?

Eh...he'd been in contract negotiations with ESPN for a while.  He's said stupider things while on the air with them and they tolerated him.

I think this was a way for them to end the negotiation (that was probably heading towards impasse/failure) and save face.

YOU CAN'T QUIT....YOU'RE FIRED!

Ed Zachary. ESPN's M.O. the past year or so has been to suspend for a week or two.  Stephen A. Smith...Olberman...that hot blonde reporter that went on a rant.  Not here.

I guess I see it differently and am on ESPN's side, likely because I'm Dominican from the waist down.

If by 4th grader you mean hanging to the knee-caps, then yes.

Saying the Dominican Republic isn't a bastion of academia is totes worse than calling the state of Alabama "tornado bait".
