AUBURN, Alabama -- Auburn freshman football player Jakell Mitchell was shot and killed early Sunday morning at an apartment complex near the Auburn University campus.

The Auburn Police Department is investigating and developing leads as it searches for a suspect.

Police responded to the Tiger Lodge apartment complex at 12:25 a.m., where Mitchell suffered a fatal injury, Auburn police Capt. Will Matthews told AL.com.

Mitchell was rushed to East Alabama Medical Center by ambulance with multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Lee County Coroner's Office. He died shortly after arriving at the emergency room. The death is being treated as a homicide. An autopsy will be performed in Montgomery.

The Auburn Police and Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences were still working the scene in a parking lot inside the Tiger Lodge apartment complex as of 6 a.m.

Anyone with information about the shooting should contact the Auburn Police Department.

Mitchell redshirted this season for the Auburn Tigers out of nearby Opelika High. The local star was ranked the 17th-best tight end in the country by 247sports.com.

Mitchell sat out the 2014 season at Auburn to gain weight and get ready for 2015. He was expected to contend for a starting spot next season at H-Back and tight end following the departures of seniors Brandon Fulse and C.J. Uzomah.

Mitchell turned heads in fall camp and had the biggest play in the final scrimmage of preseason drills when he caught a deep pass for a 70-yard gain.

Mitchell missed his senior season at Opelika High as he recovered from an ACL injury. He rushed for 392 yards and 17 touchdowns and added 403 receiving yards as a junior in 2013.

The shooting early Sunday occurred at the same apartment complex Desmonte Leonard killed three men, including former Auburn players Ed Christian and Ladarious Phillips, at a party in the summer of 2012. He was convicted of capital murder, attempted murder and assault in October and will be sentenced Jan. 7.

I lived at those apartments in 2004 and 2005.  Very, very nice place when it was new.

I drove through it a few months ago for nostalgic purposes. There was some kind of commotion in the middle of the road with about fifteen people jumping around screaming and shoving each other.  I think they were joking with each other, but I couldn't get around them.  I thought about honking my horn but didn't want them to actually pay attention to me so I did a three point turn and went out the other way.

Someone told me that the complex didn't want to put the money into remaining one of the nicer places in the area, so they kept their low rates ($350/person) and started advertising in Tuskegee.  It's only three or four minutes from the interstate and about 20-30 from Tuskegee's campus.  Gone way down hill since the clientele changed.

Fuck.

This guy was more than likely our TE/HB next year.

I hate that Montgomery and Opelika are both so close to our campus. I know when I lived there that trash from both of those cities came into town on weekends to party and cause trouble, especially at all of those apt complexes out on college st towards the Interstate. Valley too. No idea if that's what happened here but it sure had everthing to do the last shooting there.

This really just sucks in general.

Townhall nailed it. That whole Longleaf area is terrible now. I'm pretty sure those complexes are also accepting Section 8 now, which is making the problem even worse.

Exactly. It's drawing in people from sketchy areas who don't even attend Au. Then on weekends they bring their "crews" in.

Not saying Jakell was in the gang, but this does sound related. Could have been something about a girl who perhaps had a bf thinking he was Opelika gang. Whatever the case, this is horrible.

Side note, if they don't already, the local PD needs to implement street cameras in this neighborhood.  I would think this would be acceptable now with as many people being shot and killed there.

I don't know any of the particulars of this case but I was on OHS campus while he was still there and after he had committed. He was my escort and we walked to several offices and I was very impressed with how nice he was. "Yes sir" and "No sir" and really excited about going to AU. It was very obvious that the kid had a good upbringing and was very respectful.

And I was looking forward to seeing him play. He was a very athletic kid. I just can't imagine that he started any altercation. Not that it matters but I'm looking forward to details coming out.

I can't imagine what his family is going through right now. Terribly tragic for all.

This is why I feel like its about a girl. A girl that he and others know from Opelika. Jakell could have been and probably was completely innocent in this but some other kid felt like he was "disrespected". Nowadays it seems it doesnt take much to get shot at. Of course this is all guessing but it seems the most likely. Still is horrible any way its laid out.

Suspect arrested in slaying of Auburn football player Jakell Mitchell
Ray Slover
December 14, 2014 4:12pm EST

Police arrested a suspect Sunday afternoon in the slaying of Auburn football player Jakell Mitchell. Markale Deandra Hart, 22, of Camp Hill, Ala., faces a murder charge, according to Elizabeth White, a reporter for WTVM-TV in Columbus, Ga. Additional media sources confirmed the arrest and identity.

Mitchell, 18, died of multiple gunshots shortly after midnight Sunday, according to media reports. He was a redshirt freshman for the Tigers. He had yet to play for team but was expected to be a tight end next season.

Police and medical officials continued their investigation, but reports said no additional arrests were expected.

There was no immediate information on why the shooting occurred. A medical examiner said Mitchell died in a hospital emergency room of multiple gunshot wounds to the chest.

Drake Ledet, an Auburn sophomore living in a building near the complex, said there were two parties going on in the area hours earlier. When he heard gunshits he looked out his window.

"I'd say it was at least eight" shots," Ledet told The Associated Press. "People were screaming ... I saw people scattering everywhere, getting in their cars."

Auburn player Jeremy Johnson came to the apartment complex Sunday afternoon, telling the AP he wanted to see the site and remember his teammate. Growing emotional as he spoke, Johnson said: "I couldn't believe it. Jakell was a real good kid."

Several law enforcement agencies were involved in Hart's arrest. Hart was jailed in Lee County, Ala., White reported.

Hart was arrested in Dadeville, Ala., about 25 minutes northwest of Auburn, according to Al.com. Hart was held on $150,000 bond.

In a Facebook post announcing the arrest, White included this image of Hart.

Classy on his part, even for a Bammer. I expect the NFL will fine him for doing something to the uniform.

Sounds like Jakell was in an argument but didn't know the shooter. His girlfriend told police this. Simp may be right about it being over a girl. Who knows? But it was senseless regardless. Some thug who has had prior burglary (and I believe robbery charges) from Camp Hill (out in the middle of nowhere, toward the lake).

My first thought was that Jakell was in a place that he didn't belong, and maybe his parents wouldn't want him at this party where over 100 were congregated. But then, I thought that's doesn't mean that he actually did anything wrong. It really doesn't matter. He was in a parking lot of an apartment complex in Auburn, Al. People shouldn't have to worry about getting shot there. Jakell is the victim and I'm not going with the "he shouldn't have been there" mantra.

AUBURN, Alabama -- Auburn tight end Jakell Mitchell was in an argument with a man when a third person pulled a gun and shot the redshirt freshman at an off-campus party Sunday morning, Mitchell's girlfriend told the Associated Press.

Mitchell, 18, died from multiple gunshot wounds shortly after midnight Sunday at the Tiger Lodge apartment complex.

Ayanna Hughuley, 17, said Mitchell was in the middle of an argument with a man in the parking lot when a third man pulled a gun early Sunday, according to the AP.

"He just started shooting. Jakell fell on the ground and he tried to get back up and run, and then he fell again. He started shooting at Jakell again while Jakell was on the ground," Hughuley told the AP.

Police arrested Markale Deanda Hart, 22, of Camp Hill at 10:45 a.m. in Dadeville and charged him with murder. Police said in a statement they do not expect more arrests, but their investigation will continue.

Hughuley told the AP she doesn't believe Mitchell knew Hart. She was also not aware who started the argument. Police have not shared a possible motive in the murder.

Two residents at the Tiger Lodge complex said they heard at least six gun shots after midnight as a party raged in an adjacent building and in the parking lot, where one bystander told AL.com up to 100 people scattered as the gun fire split the night air.

"I heard people running down the stairs and then lights everywhere," said George Morgan, 38, who lives in the complex. "It was like cockroaches when the lights come on."

Police responded to a 911 call at 12:25 a.m. Sunday and discovered Mitchell in the passenger seat of a car with multiple gun-shot wounds. He was transported by ambulance to the East Alabama Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

Shards of glass and dozens of evidence markers littered the asphalt as police conducted their investigation Sunday morning. Bullets hit at least three vehicles and one pierced the wall of an adjacent residence. No other injuries were reported.

A Cadillac's rear passenger window was shattered and a bullet pushed through the top of the car door. The vehicle was towed by police for further analysis, but Auburn police did not confirm whether Mitchell was inside the vehicle when authorities arrived on the scene.

Mitchell's vehicle, a red Dodge Challenger adorned with a "JAKELL" license plate, was not involved in the shooting. The vehicle was towed after police cleared the scene shortly after 10 a.m. Meanwhile, Auburn police, the Tallapoosa County Sheriff's Department and Jackson Gap closed in on Hart 25 miles away in Dadeville.

Hart has a history of criminal activity. He will be eligible for a $150,000 bond at the Lee County Jail.

Auburn fans, coaches and teammates shared their grief on Twitter and in statements released through the school. Auburn coach Gus Malzahn called it a "senseless tragedy" in a statement.

"I know the Auburn Family is hurting, especially our players and coaches, and we are going to love and support them through this difficult time," Malzahn said. "We have lost a member of our family too young, too soon."

The Tiger Lodge has been at the center of several violent altercations in recent years. Three men, including two former Auburn football players, were shot to death during a party in June 2012.

Mitchell sat out the 2014 season at Auburn to gain weight and get ready for the 2015 season. Isn't that bond kind of low for someone with a criminal history and a charge of at least 2nd degree murder?

Thought so too.  There's one line in that piece that should have told them all they needed to know in order to set his bond at, "You ain't gettin' out".  When his girlfriend said the guy shot Jakell and he fell down.  He tried to get up but the guy started shooting him again.  This guy meant that Jakell was going to die.  Period.

Wouldn't matter, they could just relocate down the road. In the early 2000's, I lived in the back of the Harmon duplexes on South College. Brand new places, great yards for slip-n-slide keg parties, golf ball chipping, safe sidewalks for ladies to jog on, and ample parking for shackers late night study sessions. Sure those houses might've blown away under a strong fart but they were considered pretty nice in those days.

Less than a decade later, I'm not sure there's a street in the neighborhood that isn't section 8.

Much like THS, I went for a little nostalgia tour a few football seasons ago and I'm not even sure there's a house in the neighborhood occupied by a college student. Strange really.

Needless to say, it's not even the same campus or city, for that matter, as it was when I lived there.  Yes, they did in fact bulldoze the first place I lived on Glenn.  The apartments Snagette lived in up there were as nice as any in Auburn....at the time.  I did the same thing too last year.  Drove out there to check out the old place.  It literally looked like the projects.

The more I read about this, the more it pisses me off and the more I feel for the Mitchell family. It seems Jakell is one of those kids that any parent would love their kid to have by their side. Some punk who thinks he swings lower because he has a gun ended up stopping a bright kids life over some bullshit. It makes me sick. It makes no difference if some think Jakell should have been there or not, the fact is some shit head killed him and there is no undoing this.

I'm not sure leveling that place to the ground because a similar environment can arise somewhere else. You can't stop stupid people from doing stupid things. I will say though, every damn street in and around Auburn campus needs street cameras and if they don't, any Auburn athlete is banned from going there.

As far as the bond, I can not believe this asswipe even has one.

Even if you get rid of the government subsidized housing, you can't get rid of the thugs driving from Montgomery and Camp Hill with their crew to brandish their .40 cal and pick up chicks.

We live in a different world than when most of us were in during our college days. Totally different. There was crime. Burglary and I'm sure that there was more date rape than was ever reported. Drugs and DUIs. But, I can't recall anyone being shot at any parties during my college days.

Never understood the mentality of taking someone's life over an argument.  Sure get into a fight beat the hell out of each other, don't team up let the 2 guys duke it out and be done with it. One clear winner!

Seriously taking the life of another?!? and guess what your life is also now fucked...congratulations you won the argument.

People are idiots, it's not worth it anymore to get into a fight with somebody.  I'm not afraid of getting my ass beat, but I am afraid of being killed, and you don't know anymore. It's one of the reasons I always carry a trident with me.

People are idiots, it's not worth it anymore to get into a fight with somebody.  I'm not afraid of getting my ass beat, but I am afraid of being killed, and you don't know anymore. It's one of the reasons I always carry a trident with me.
This is an irrelevant analogy but I will use it anyway. I see these people (and some of them may be you) that ride their bicycles in the road. You know the ones that have the tight little bicycle britches on that I can't wear because of my huge penis.

Well, they have every right to legally be there in the middle of rush hour traffic and on foggy mornings. And, when they get their ass run over by a log truck, their dying words can be that they had every right to be riding their bicycle on that road.

What I'm saying is that common sense should prevail but it often doesn't.

And although most of us wouldn't be the first to draw and fire, these thugs have little to live for. And all they really do live for is their street cred. Not sure that I agree that he's ruined his life. 3 meals a day and free A/C, nice weight room and he can still get high.

"I heard people running down the stairs and then lights everywhere," said George Morgan, 38, who lives in the complex. "It was like cockroaches when the lights come on."

This tells me that the complex can be officially off-limits to players.  Should be hardpressed by the university for all students to be careful going there.

When I lived at the Exchange, there were no 38 year old men living there.  It was all college students.  Even the people that worked the front office were undergrads.

If you're going to a party at an apartment complex in Auburn that is not mostly Auburn students, you are not going to a college party.  You cannot expect the same kind of social norms there as you would at a college party.

Drunk people get into fights at college parties and get arrested and then Jakell Mitchell is on the news as an Auburn player facing discipline from Malzahn.  People get into fights at section 8 apartment complexes and get shot and killed and usually no one gives a shit.

Put a fence around the place.

Didn't Chizad and JR settle their beef just showing up to X Gate and rubbing dongs over some Landsharks? I'm not 100% sure they actually rubbed dongs but thats normally guys do that drink Landsharks isnt it?....Better yet Mrs. Dallas squashed her beef with Buzz by just putting a little boobage in his face. Honest and finite ways to settle debates here on the X people.

Obviously, Mitchell's death is tragic.  Kevin Skrabinshki wrote a piece yesterday saying right now, people need to mourn his death and not use the event as some social commentary on other issues.  But, I couldn't help but think while reading this from Joel Erickson how the way friends, and especially his family, are reacting to his death, is a great example of how the marches and so called protests going on lately should be handled. And the last quote in this article speaks volumes.

OPELIKA, Alabama - They came by the hundreds, carrying candles of all shapes, sizes and colors, candles brought from their homes or borrowed from others or purchased on the way to the fountain in front of the Lee County Courthouse.

Family, friends, coaches and teammates of Jakell Mitchell, who was shot and killed Sunday in Auburn, gathered in the middle of a throng of supporters, some wearing Auburn gear, some wearing the colors of Opelika High.

What began as an impromptu candlelight vigil organized by a few of Mitchell's former classmates at Opelika High transformed into an event that became part vigil, part church sermon and part rally to end the violence that claimed Mitchell's life.

"Overwhelmed," his father, Mario Mitchell, said of the crowd. "But it helps. Absolutely, 100 percent helped. Without these prayers, and to see this kind of love that boy has been able to spread in a matter of two or three years, overwhelmed. Past everything I would've believed."

The idea for the vigil came from Adrianna Tapscott, a friend who transferred in to Opelika High as a senior and built a friendship with Mitchell, a young man she remembered as a people person despite his quiet nature.

Tapscott simply posted the idea on Facebook. From there, news of the vigil took off, trumpeted by more of Mitchell's friends, including Karlous Cox, who went to first grade with Mitchell, played Little League baseball with him and ultimately stepped in Mitchell's place when the tight end tore his ACL before his senior season.

"He was my first friend when I moved to Opelika," Cox said. "I've known him for a while. Very humble. ... Jakell was a person a lot people knew, a lot of people respect him."

News of Mitchell's death - the Auburn tight end was shot and killed after an argument outside a party at the Tiger Lodge apartment complex in Auburn - sent shockwaves through a community that has been through too many of these tragedies.

According to Cox, he and Mitchell were close friends with Alonzo Robertson, who was murdered on vacation in Washington, D.C., with his grandmother in 2008. One of Mitchell's best friends, Martin Frazier, was found stabbed to death two years ago  in Beauregard.

That's how Frankie Bell, a teacher in Lafayette, who is an outspoken advocate against youth violence in the area and spoke at Monday night's vigil, met Mitchell. He was holding a cookout in honor of Frazier.

"He said he wanted to make sure that young people understand they do make a difference," Bell said. "I was impressed with him."

Bell and Tapscott, whose brother was killed in Decatur in 2009, both made impassioned pleas to the crowd to get involved with young people and to help stop the tide of violence among young people.

Mitchell's father, Mario, grew up among that kind of violence in Opelika before landing a football scholarship to Troy. When he took the microphone on Monday night, he acknowledged that he's been to a few candlelight vigils before.

When Mitchell left to begin college, his father told him to stick close to Auburn's campus, within the "bubble" created by East University Drive, which loops around the city of Auburn.

"That was my fear, because this is home," Mario said. "All those students down there need to stay in that bubble, and that bubble is East University. You guys (reporters) do not report outside of East University, because it's a bubble, and there's no guns. The trouble comes outside the bubble, where anybody else can invite themselves in."

The suspect in Mitchell's murder, like Desmonte Leonard, who was convicted of killing three people at the same student apartment complex in June of 2012, came from outside the bubble.

A 22-year-old from Camp Hill, Markale Hart, was arrested and charged with Mitchell's murder.

Now, in the midst of his grief, Mario Mitchell has already begun trying to prevent more tragedies. He spoke to Opelika High's football team on Monday morning, teaching them the same message he taught his son, with an addendum.

"If somebody does infiltrate the bubble, be smart enough to walk away," Mario Mitchell said. "I lost my best friend. ... The fighting, the fussing, you've got to be able to walk away."

I know there's been a lot of talk about this already, but it can't be stressed enough that people simply don't handle arguments/disputes etc. the same way they used to.  Growing up, through high school and college, if you got into it with someone, 99% or 175/182nd of the time, it was settled by swinging on each other.  You came out of it with a black eye or busted lip and the talk around school was again, how Snags punked another fool.  And then the discussion normally turned to questioning why people just don't walk away from Snags when they know it won't end well for them.  But I digress.  Aahhh...school days.

Now, people don't fight.  They just start shooting.

It has changed a lot. But, I can't say that it was the way that you describe for me. I had to really watch myself and control myself because of my training and background. I could/can kill a man with my thumb. I cannot afford to get into any silly argument and risk quickly ending another man's life over a trivial matter.

Slain Auburn football player Jakell Mitchell exchanged gunfire with suspect, detective says

Quote
Slain Auburn University football player Jakell Mitchell was armed with a handgun and exchanged gunfire with the man accused of killing him at a Dec. 14 off-campus party, an Auburn police detective says.

Quote
Attorney Mark Allen Treadwell, who represented Markale Hart [accused killer]  in the revocation hearing, said Hart told investigators and his attorneys that Mitchell pulled a weapon on him, and that Hart fired his gun in self-defense.

He said Mitchell and another man, Tyrone Rowe, were in an argument during the party, and Mitchell intended to kill Rowe.

Treadwell said Hart was given a handgun by another man, but the intent was to help Rowe get out of harm's way.

Seriously? People are going to believe the, "it wasn't my gun, I didn't pull the trigger (someone ran up and pulled the trigger instead of me), Jakell Mitchell (a person that has no criminal history) was going to kill another guy over a argument (Jakell had a Gatlin Gun in the trunk of his car that he was going to use, to kill everyone within a 1 block radius). I had to do what is right, I stopped Jakell from killing everyone, eventhough I didn't pull the trigger...Now that I think about it, Jakell was the one that pulled the trigger....yeah, he pulled the trigger on my gun to shoot himself. Yup that's how it happened, if anyone tells different than they were high on Mushrooms, PCP, LCD, Cocaine, Meth and Marjiuana (drugs all provided by Jakell Mitchell).
