Title: The Panthers Suck
Post by: Snaggletiger on August 23, 2013, 11:37:10 AM
Watched a good bit of the Panthers/Ravens exhibition game last night.  I knew Carolina had been struggling so far but hey, it's the preseason and the starters usually play a series or two and sit out the rest.  Last night, both teams kept most of the starters in well into the 3rd quarter with both Cam and Flacco taking snaps.

Cam was 10-19 for 99 yards and 20 yards rushing.  He looked awful to me.  He was badly missing fairly easy throws and looked pretty disinterested for the most part.  Now granted, his offensive line is pure shit.  I saw about 10 running plays and I didn't see 5 total yards gained between them.  The most yardage came from the 2 scrambles by Cam, which were both passing plays where he took off.

The guy has incredible talent but I don't see anything good coming out of continuing to play for that franchise.  Defensively, they look stout and I believe the D was responsible for 3 scores last night.  But I don't see any real weapons on offense outside of Cam.  I know I'm probably reading too much into watching one preseason game but other than Mr. Newton, there's nothing about that team that does anything for me.  He's the only reason I want to see them win.

They are still rebuilding, doesn't happen overnight. Last year their defense was horrible (granted they lost a lot of players to injury).  But they have built it up through youth and it looked pretty damn good against the reigning champs last night.  It takes a team to win and outside of Cam they had been focusing on getting their defense back up to snuff.

They didn't show a whole heck of a lot on offense last night by design.  Baltimore also has probably one of the best DL lines in the league. Which is the reason Carolina's OL looked like shit.

Remember this is a team that went 2-14 the year before Cam got there. Went 6-10 his first year and 7-9 last year.  They have continued to build the team, and I think they will be a wildcard team this year. Probably somewhere around 9-7.

BTW they won the game last night against the reigning world champs.  In the 3rd preseason game which is as close as you can get to a season game because the starters usually play until the 3rd quarter.

Anything else you want to complain about?

NFL teams can rebuild within three seasons.

See the 49ers, the Seahawks, the Saints, and the Falcons in recent years.

Cam isn't getting much help from his front office.  They should have traded Steve Smith.  They should never have signed Jeremy Shockey.  They should have invested in a stout offensive line the moment the drafted a QB with the #1 overall draft pick.  Instead, they tried to give Cam some weapons which helped him break records his first year but obviously hasn't given him the tools to be successful.

I mean, when Brandon LaFell is your 2nd WR and your running game is weak, you've got problems.

Defensively they aren't that terrible.  Definitely an improvement there, but this team should be built just like 2010 Auburn.  Make sure Cam can do his thing all year, and you'll have one of the highest scoring offenses in the league and a guaranteed playoff appearance.

so i take it this thread isn't about hatin' the black panthers.   i'll keep searching.

btw...the Falcons will fall flat this season.  7-9.  mark it.  pencil it.  circle it with a sharpie.

I'm with ya' on this one.  They're going to suck defensively and get outscored 41-34 every game.

Has a franchise level QB ever left a team via free agency after his rookie contract?  I can't think of any.

Luke Kuechly was a monster. If that dude plays like that all year, he will become the face of the franchise instead of Cam.

Agree that their OL is crap. They also need a running game, but you can't have that until you have an OL that can block their assignments at least half the time.

Cam was spotty. Showed some good composure at times while looking like the proverbial "dear in the headlights" at other times. Made some good throws, made some stupid throws. Doesn't help that WRs are dropping balls that should be caught. Looks like Steve Smith and Greg Olsen are going to be Cam's top 2 targets again.
