Te'o has been a saint during Notre Dame's miracle season. He is the best player on the nation's top scoring defense and has been an inspiration for all in overcoming the deaths of his grandmother and girlfriend during a 24-hour period in September. Unfortunately, Te'o won't win the Heisman Trophy, but he embodies everything the award's winner should be both on and off the field. As for Klein: So what if he seems boring; so what if Tim Tebow makes him look prude? In Tebow-esque fashion, Klein carried his team this season and did so perhaps more than any other player in college football. And complain all you want about Lynch, but he has Northern Illinois in a BCS bowl for the first time and leads the FBS in rushing. Both of those facts are impressive, but not nearly as impressive as Lynch leading the Huskies through wild and crazy MACtion undefeated this season. And yes, I realize I don't have Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel on my ballot. I don't consider players with pending criminal charges, and Manziel still faces three counts relating to an early morning fight in June. Manziel has been spectacular, but when he wins the Heisman on Saturday night, he should give it away -- to coach Kevin Sumlin and offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, for being the best at their positions this season, for implementing Texas A&M's high-powered scheme and for standing by Manziel.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Notre Dame says a story about Manti Te'o's girlfriend dying, which he said inspired him to play better as he helped the Fighting Irish get to the BCS title game, turned out to be a hoax apparently perpetrated against the linebacker.
The university issued a news release Wednesday after Deadspin.com reported it could find no record of Lennay Kekua existing.
The university says that Notre Dame coaches were informed by Te'o and his parents on Dec. 26 that Te'o had been the victim of what appeared to be a hoax. Someone using a fictitious name "apparently ingratiated herself" with Te'o, the school said, then conspired with others to lead him to believe she had died of leukemia.
The university said "the proper authorities" are investigating a "very cruel deception."
Lennay Kekua, the woman alleged to be Teo's girlfriend, does not have a death certificate, Deadspin.com reported. Stanford, where she reportedly went to school, has no record of anybody by that name.
Te'o is currently training in preparation for the NFL draft at the IMG Institute in Bradenton, Fla. He could not be reached for comment.

Kekua, a Stanford student, swaps phone numbers with Te'o.
2010-2011: Te'o and Kekua are friends. "She was gifted in music, multi-lingual, had dreams grounded in reality and the talent to catch up to them" (South Bend Tribune). "They started out as just friends," Te'o's father, Brian, told the Tribune in October 2012. "Every once in a while, she would travel to Hawaii, and that happened to be the time Manti was home, so he would meet with her there."

Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick said that Manti Te'o was at ESPN's college football awards show, on Dec. 6, when he received a phone call alerting him to the hoax. That was the moment, according to the Notre Dame timeline, that Te'o learned Lennay Kekua wasn't dead, and wasn't real. Here are quotes from Te'o in the days following Dec. 6 in which he makes reference to Kekua.
On Dec. 8, Te'o was interviewed by ESPN's Chris Fowler in New York at the Heisman ceremony.
Fowler: "There were a lot of cameras around you this year, there was so much public sharing of very private moments, which shared moment will you never forget above the others?"
Te'o: "I think I'll never forget the time when I found out that, you know, my girlfriend passed away and the first person to run to my aid was my defensive coordinator, Coach [Bob] Diaco, and you know he said something very profound to me, he said ‘this is where your faith is tested.' Right after that, I ran into the players' lounge and I got on the phone with my parents – and I opened my eyes and my head coach was sitting right there. And so, you know, there are a hundred-plus people on our team and the defensive coordinator and our head coach took time to just go get one [of those players]. You know I think that was the most meaningful to me."
Also on Dec. 8, Te'o went on ESPN Radio with Freddie Coleman and Mel Kiper Jr. (Starts at the 4:23 mark.)
Coleman: You lose your girlfriend and your grandmother the same week, right? I just want to make sure I've got that correct.
Te'o: "Correct—same day, same day."
Coleman: "Same day. So what do you think both of those ladies would say to you, being a Heisman Trophy finalist?"
Te'o: "I hope that my grandmom, and my girlfriend, would say that they're proud."
That same day, Te'o held a press conference in New York. A South Bend, Ind., TV station later aired it.
"I don't like cancer at all. I lost both my grandparents and my girlfriend to cancer."

The bizarre Manti Te’o fake girlfriend frenzy reached a new low — with a high-pitched confession.
Hoax mastermind Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, posing as the mysterious Lennay Kekua, was the falsetto voice on the other end of the all-night phone calls with the Notre Dame star, the scammer’s lawyer said.
The Heisman Trophy finalist “thought it was a female he was talking with,†lawyer Milton Grimes acknowledged to the Daily News. “It was Ronaiah as Lennay.â€
The soul-baring chats between the star linebacker and the man posing as his phantom girlfriend were the linchpin of their fake fairy-tale romance. But Te’o apparently never realized it was Tuiasosopo disguising his voice to assume the persona of stunning, sassy Stanford coed Kekua.
Grimes, best known for helping Rodney King win a multimillion-dollar judgment against the city of Los Angeles, compared the deception to an actor playing a role.
“Come on, Hollywood does it all the time,†Grimes said Wednesday. “People can do that.â€
The photos of Lennay were swiped from the Facebook page of Diane O’Meara, a high school classmate of Tuiasosopo.
Tuiasosopo’s résumé includes vocal and dramatic training. He was president of his high school drama club, performs with a Christian band and auditioned last year for the TV talent show “The Voice.â€
Grimes insisted that former high school football star Tuiasosopo, 22, wasn’t trying to hurt or humiliate Te’o.
“This wasn’t a prank to make fun,†Grimes told The News. “It was establishing a communication with someone. ... It was a person with a troubled existence trying to reach out and communicate and have a relationship.â€
Grimes declined to answer when asked to elaborate on his client’s intentions or what type of relationship he wanted with the college football star: “I wouldn’t describe his issues at this time.â€
Te’o, in an interview with Katie Couric, said he painted himself into a corner with all the attention surrounding his relationship and Kekua’s “death†on Sept. 12.
The moving tale of the girlfriend’s battle with leukemia became a touchstone of the Fighting Irish season, particularly after Te’o announced that she passed away on the same day as his beloved grandmother.
Te’o denied any role in the hoax, but admitted perpetuating the story even after a Dec. 6 phone call from “Lennay†insisting she faked her death to dodge drug dealers.
Te'o runs drills to prepare for the upcoming NFL draft.
The voice on the other end of that incredible phone call belonged to Tuiasosopo, according to Grimes.
“Katie, put yourself in my situation,†Te’o said in the interview that airs in full Thursday. “This girl, who I committed myself to, died on Sept. 12. Now I get a phone call on Dec. 5, saying that she’s alive and then I’m going to be put on national TV two days later.â€
Grimes said the delay in his client’s making a public statement is tied to a California law that went into effect Jan. 1 — making it a crime to create a false identity online.
Tuiasosopo is seeing a mental health professional and wants to tell his side of the story, the lawyer said.
Grimes did insist that the timing of Kekua’s tragic “demise,†within hours of the grandmother’s death, was just a strange coincidence.
And he was adamant his client is a good guy who simply made a mistake.
“He’s torn by this,†Grimes said. “He didn’t mean for anyone to be hurt. Anything that he has done, he has apologized to those he could apologize to.â€

So Good Morning America had voice analysts confirm that it was impossible for the voice on that voicemail to have been from Roniah Tuiasosopo. Highly unlikely to have been from a male at all.

Hoax mastermind Ronaiah Tuiasosopo’s pretty young cousin played the part of “Lennay Kekua,†the fake girlfriend he created, The Post has learned.
Tino Tuiasosopo convinced the Notre Dame grid star that she was the real deal, calling him at school, telling him she loved him and even sobbing hysterically when another girl answered his phone, several of the woman’s relatives said yesterday.
“Tino is the girl that Manti has been talking to all these months,†said a Tuiasosopo cousin.
The revelation shoots down claims by Ronaiah Tuiasosopo’s attorney, Milton Grimes, that Ronaiah altered his masculine voice to play the part of the chirpy, flirty Kekua.
Grimes did not respond to calls or e-mails for comment.
One of Ronaiah’s relatives believes Grimes put out the story because the admitted hoaxer “is determined to take the rap.â€
In an interview yesterday with ABC’s Katie Couric, Te’o provided voicemail messages from Lennay and insisted that he’d been duped into believing he was in a legitimate relationship.
After hearing the voicemails, one of Tino’s cousins told The Post, “There is no doubt whatsoever that it’s Tino.â€
Te’o told Couric he believes the voice he heard as “Lennay†was definitely a woman. “Well, it didn’t sound like a man. It sounded like a woman,†he said.
“If he somehow made that voice, that’s incredible, that’s an incredible talent to do that. Especially every single day. “
In one voice recording, a hysterical “Lennay†accuses Te’o of having another girl in his room, saying, “I don’t know who answered your phone . . . I don’t care. [Inaudible] I’m trying. You made it clear what you want. Take care.â€
One of the Tuiasosopo sources said, “That’s the way [Tino] cries when she’s feeling sorry for herself. Its her, that’s the voice.â€
Tino, in her mid-20s, lives in Pago Pago, American Samoa. She works for her dad’s construction company and is described by relatives as vivacious and flirtatious, but very involved in the church. In a profile on the social networking site BEBO from 2008, she lists “acting†as a hobby.
Tino assumed her role in the Te’o ruse after she was dumped from a long-distance relationship with another man — and there were “extraordinary similarities†between the two situations, a source said.
The man broke off the relationship in late 2011.
“She said it was OK, because she was doing better. She said she was talking to another person [and] he plays football for Notre Dame — number 5, Manti,†a source recalled.
Tino couldn’t be reached for comment. Her dad, Bob, declined to talk about the situation, saying, “I don’t want to divulge anything.â€

On Thursday, the first half of Dr. Phil's exclusive interview with Ronaiah Tuiasosopo will air in its entirety. Today, Dr. Phil McGraw went on the Today Show to talk about the interview and share some of the things that Ronaiah told him about the hoax he carried out against Manti Te'o. Here's what McGraw told Today's Mike Taibbi about Roanaiah's feelings for Te'o:
Here we have a young man that fell deeply, romantically in love. I asked him straight up, "Was this a romantic relationship with you?" And he says yes. I said, "Are you then therefore gay?" And he said, "When you put it that way, yes." And then he caught himself and said, "I am confused."
The Today segment also asserted that it was in fact Ronaiah and not a female accomplice that Te'o was speaking with on the phone with when he thought he was talking to "Lennay." Ronaiah also told McGraw that Te'o was "absolutely, unequivocally" not involved in carrying out the hoax.

So, the Dr. Phil exclusive interview ( :facepalm: ) aired yesterday. As the cliff hanger before nearly every commercial break, he teased with "Let's hear you do the voice". To which, Roniah replied "Nah." Dr. Phil said that if he didn't replicate the voice, it's going to be very hard for people to believe Manti wasn't in on it. Roniah said, "I just can't right now. It's too painful." Dr. Phil pleaded again. Sharp orchestra strike dum dum dum...commercial break.
Turns out we have to wait for PART TWO which airs today to see if he does it or not.
I'll be shocked if he does it convincingly.

Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, the alleged mastermind behind the Manti Te'o "catfish" hoax, told Dr. Phil today that he killed off fake girlfriend Lennay Kekua because Te'o told "her" he didn't need her anymore and had been talking to four other girls on Skype.
Tuiasosopo said that Lennay and Te'o had broken up when "things had gotten a little shaky" two weeks earlier. He said that when he checked Te'o's social media accounts, which he had the passwords to, he found that the only irregularity were conversations with other girls on Skype.
An angry "Lennay" called Te'o and demanded to know if he had been talking to other girls. Te'o then told her that his grandmother had just passed away, which Tuiasosopo claimed he did not know.
"Forget I ever asked the question," Tuiasosopo recalled telling Te'o. "I'm here for you. I'll support you. I'm praying for your family."
He claimed an angry Te'o said he didn't need her, never needed her and didn't want to speak to her again. He also said that Te'o later texted that he had been talking to other girls on Skype, including two of his ex-girlfriends.
Tuiasosopo said that Te'o's anger hit him hard and upset him, as Ronaiah, not just as Lennay.
"I poured so much into Lennay," Tuiasosopo said. "I was crying that morning, hurt, emotionally."
He decided at that point that he couldn't be Lennay anymore and need to end it.
Dr. Phil McGraw pressed Tuiasosopo to replicate the fake girlfriend's voice that spent countless hours talking to the Notre Dame star linebacker.
"Much of this relationship you had was on the phone...let me hear that voice," Dr. Phil demanded of Tuiasosopo. "If that is you on those voicemails, then prove it."
"I can't, even if I tried," Tuiasosopo said. "There's a whole lot that went into pushing me to do something like that..to go to that extreme consistently. Even if I tried, it doesn't come off right."
Tuiasosopo said it was "awkward and uncomfortable" and he had never done the voice in front of a person, doing it alone in a dark room every time.
Dr. Phil told Tuiasosopo that he was "very skeptical" and just wanted the truth.
A lawyer for Tuiasosopo has claimed that Tuiasosopo used a falsetto voice to impersonate Te'o's fictitious girlfriend Lennay Kekua for two years. The attorney has not responded to requests for comment from ABC News.
Te'o told ABC's Katie Couric that he doubted it was a man's voice he listened to all those hours and audio experts who reviewed voice emails from Lennay for ABC News concluded it was a woman talking.
Tuiasosopo initially refused to recreate the voice, but eventually agreed to do it behind a privacy screen. That portion of the interview is scheduled to be shown during part two of the interview on Friday.
Tuiasosopo said that it is "very shameful" and "very painful" to talk about the deception, but insists that he never asked for anything from Te'o and that the emotions were real.
"My heart had invested not just time, but all of my energy into this," he told Dr. Phil. "As twisted and confusing as it may be...yeah, I cared for this person."
Tuiasosopo told Dr. Phil that he fell in love with Te'o. He also said that he is working to "recover from homosexuality," which he compared to being a recovering drug addict.
Dr. Phil said that he and Tuiasosopo watched Te'o's interview with Couric on Jan. 24 and then sat down for their own conversation.
He said that Tuiasosopo, 22, told him that his feelings were genuine during the two-year hoax, but he struggled to come clean.
"I wanted to end it because after everything I had gone through, I finally realized that I just had to move on with my life,'' Tuiasosopo said. "I had to start just living and let this go. There were many times where Manti and Lennay had broken up, but something would bring them back together whether it was something going on in his life or in Lennay's life, or in this case, my life.''
Kekua supposedly died of leukemia while Te'o led his Notre Dame football team to the championship game.
