And we are still screwed. I will vote against any of my reps that voted for this:

So you're pissed that you don't get to pay significantly higher taxes?

There's a difference between getting screwed and getting raped. Screw means someone took the time to warm it up and maybe use some lube. Ass rape means they just ram it in. We are being ass raped out of and with our own money. The spending cuts need to happened across the board, including defense. Most defense. Leave entitlements alone because most won't see SS anyway. How did SS become and entitlement? I swear, I put money into that system that they continuously spend. How about they just give me all of the contributions made in my name/SSN and I'll short the market with them?
In order to have to pay higher taxes one must be employed. Plus, it's only for a couple of months right?

I do agree with you actually. With a lot of it.
But we had to avoid the "fiscal cliff." The last thing we need right now is the government slowing the economy. So I'm glad they resolved to delay the destruction of the country.
Even though it's a ficticious title, and they could have just delayed the "cliff" another 30 days or whatever.
The politics is the worst part of this. There is no deal. There is no desire to do what's best for the country. It was a big game of "I'm going to make the other side look bad with this."
-
So you're pissed that you don't get to pay significantly higher taxes?
To a degree I am.
The only way that this thing gets better ( I would say fixed but I think it's too far gone to get completely fixed) is if everyone realizes that there is a big shit sandwich on our plate and we will ALL have to take a bite.
-

Socialist.
-
The last thing we need right now is the government slowing the economy.
The fact that the government is a large enough business to affect the economy without any checks and balances is the larger problem. REAL businesses that affect the economy have to make money or they go away. Government should be no different.
-
Socialist.
Negative sir.
A compromise does nothing except pay lip service.

Agreed.
But what would this "fiscal cliff" have done to curtail that?
I don't think anything. I think it would have made it worse. They would have landed a deal anyway in a month. The problem would have been solidifying voter bases. We go over the cliff? The Democrats had the upper hand. The senate and executive branch had come to an agreement to "save the country!" It was all on the house.
What would have happened if the house turned it down and everyone's taxes gone up?
What would have happened if the house turned it down and the newspapers and TV stations had headlines that read "Over the Fiscal Cliff We Go as Republican-led House Fails to Pass Deal"?
-

I'm sorry but I just don't see where anything good long term will come of this. All it is doing is prolonging the inevitable. The democrats and republicans are both fucktards.

So you're pissed that you don't get to pay significantly higher taxes?
I'm pissed that they didn't do anything to solve the real issue, which is spending. The $15B spending cut over 10 years is equivalent to a 2-pack a day smoker pledging to give up 5 cigarettes per year. We are spending our way into oblivion.
Americans voted for European entitlements but don't want to pay European taxes (which don't cover their entitlements either, but are much closer than we are).

The defense budget alone spends all of the money collected in revenue through Income Taxes. If they hadn't touched our SS trust fund money, then there would be adequate funding for US and not the illegals. Who the fuck misinterpreted the Emily Lazarus' poem anyway? That poem was written to the Russian Turks and not every swinging dick in the world. Land of opportunity, yea right. Maybe for those who are taught to game the system at our expense.
I still look for the government to default on THEIR DEBT. Must be nice to be able to give yourself a raise at the expense of the sheeple.

Thats fine and dandy but most Americans work FOR the ones who are about to get a tax increase.
I also don't like the fact that for every dollar in spending cuts we are raising taxes 41 dollars. Sorry but a 41 to 1 ratio is NOT compromise. Boehner even conceded to give them 4 to 1 ratio and both sides said no. Fuck them.

I know that. However, the TSA could use a cut in funding since they are making money off of unruly passengers.

Everybody is going to pay more in taxes. You, me, everybody on this forum. I will pay around $600 a year more. I'm not really pissed about that. What I AM pissed about is the spending. Everybody's taxes just got raised, and it still isn't going to fix anything as far as the deficit goes.

We has a spending problem not a revenue problem. And we just addressed the one that is not the problem. And practically ignored the other. Nothing solved. THAT is the issue.

How dare you present facts.
-
We have a government problem. If someone is employed by the federal government, then they are a liberal because their salary and benefits are a direct result of tax revenue. If they then become private sector and their income is still derived from tax revenue, they remain a liberal. Only until they have freed themselves totally from receiving direct benefits of taxation, whether it be retirement pension, healthcare or a number of other government benefits, then they will truly never be a conservative. When cost of living increases are accrued through either government debt or raised taxes, then that person is a monetary beneficiary of said revenue. SS is not considered a direct benefit of revenue because the contributions have already been withheld from that person's PRIVATE SECTOR PAYCHECKS.

There was a reduction in payroll taxes starting in 2011 that was extended into 2012. The past two years it was at 4.2% roughly. Starting yesterday, it is now back at 6.2%.
They did not address this and are going to allow it to go back to 6.2%. They instituted it in 2011 to promote growth in the economy. This money is used to fund Social Security and other programs. They were using general funds to replace the loss of money over the last 2 years.
Long story short, you are going to pay more taxes... Like Howard said, we have to deal with this shit sandwich.
-
Which is why the Republicans walked out in the beginning...
I said before I don't mind paying higher taxes. What I have a problem with is what the money is going to.
I like what Romney said in the first debate..."I would eliminate all programs that we don't want to borrow money to pay for". That should pretty much get us on the right track.
I really really like my Verizon FIOS at the house. And even my iphone and service. Those 2 bills are probably $350 for the house hold. Those bills would some of the first to go if I couldn't make my mortgage payment.
Why is the federal government not set up the same way?
-

Because they have the printer.

Should have been addressed. Regardless, if no agreement was met, those taxes would have gone up with another 2-3% in income taxes.
I have not stated that what was on the table was the best possible scenario. But it was going to be way, way worse, had no agreement been made.
These things should have been addressed, and our dysfunctional Congress should have gotten their shit together long before an hour before the catastrophe were set to take place, and addressed it.

Last sentence is the best point in your post. They waited until the last min and then come up with this craptastic deal to avoid the looming cliff. Bs.

Oh, I agree. But we kicked the fucking can, instead of trying to solve the problem. Inept.

Picking the lesser of two evils wasn't a good strategy.

$70+ billion in pork/tax breaks added to the bill.
-
There never was a fiscal cliff, they just couldn't stop spending within their means. That's all the whole damn was about.
If the Republicans want to do something serious about spending, now is their chance. The battle over tax rates is already over, and there is no election in November.
The Republicans could conceivably say “NO†to a debt ceiling increase if they want to. If that happened, the federal government would only be able to spend the money that it already has. It would not be able to borrow more. That would mean that we would have to start living within our means.

Let the Black Market flourish.
For the record:
Section 4191 of the Internal Revenue Code now imposes an excise tax on the sale of certain medical devices.
The tax applies to sales of taxable medical devices after Dec. 31, 2012.
The tax is 2.3 percent of the sale price of the taxable medical device. See Chapter 5 of IRS Publication 510, Excise Taxes, and Notice 2012-77 for additional information on the determination of sale price

define "taxable medical devices"
-
Yeah. Sucks.
However, Cabella's fucked up and accidentally taxed its customers for non "Medical Devices".
http://www.snopes.com/politics/taxes/medicaldevice.asp
Why the medical device excise tax should have been applied to all the items listed in the receipts pictured above is something of a mystery. The state of Texas (where these receipts are said to have originated) allows sellers to pass along the expense of the new medical device excise tax to customers by "separately stating a line item charge on the invoice or receipt given to their customers for 'Federal Excise Tax' or something similar," but the vendor, Cabela's, is a retailer of hunting, fishing, camping and related outdoor recreation merchandise not known for selling medical devices, and the items listed in the receipts (such as a Ruger Attache Pistol Case) would not seem by any stretch of the imagination to fit FDA definitions of medical devices. It's possible that some vendors switched over to new sales software on 1 January 2013 that was programmed to accommodate the new tax but improperly applied it to all purchases rather than just those of qualifying medical devices.
(Some Cabela's customers have since told us that they were informed the chain's cash registers did indeed manifest a glitch starting on 1 January 2013 that improperly imposed the medical device excise tax surcharge on non-qualifying merchandise and were advised to contact Cabela's customer service department and request refunds for the overcharges.)

It's still messed up that it's required to charge an "excise" tax for medical devices, to help pay for obamacare.

I would rather it be broken out like that too instead of just things costing more. I think people will get more pissed if they see it broken out like that.

That'd be nice.
It'd also be nice if a receipt read like this:
Best Buy
1 42' Vizio Television $1000
Subtotal: $1000
Tax: $80
Total: $1080
Account# ******80085
Cash Back: $0
Food stamps: $10
Defense: $15
Obamacare: $15
Government Salaries: $10
Unemployment Benefits: $10
Education: $10
State: $10

HE....THEY...decided someone else needed it more than you. I can't for the life of me understand how half of this country can be ok with the concept of very unnatural social engineering. As Thatcher said, eventually you run out of other people's money to spend.

Agree, thats what its SUPPOSED to go. But theyve been dipping from the SS pot for years to ay for other bullshit which is the MAIN reason why it is going under. Nevermind the fact that its an involuntary savings acct I didnt ask for and the way it works is broke as hell. Fuck it either way.

And this increase was never even debated. It's not like the House was trying to continue the payroll tax cuts. No one on either side even brought it up.

For the most part, agree.
At least their are a few Republicans like Rubio, the Pauls, Issa and Bachmann (only thing I agree with her on)who understand the monetary system and the debt problem in general.

I should ask admin to merge the threads "Greatest Cheater Ever" and this one.
The Twelve Steps
We came to understand that our government is powerless over its spending - that our nation's debt had become unmanageable.
We came to believe that a power greater than our fiat currency could restore us to sanity.
We made a decision to turn our savings and our investments over to the care of gold, as we understand gold to be a physical asset - not a paper promise.
We made a searching and fearless inventory of our wealth.
We converted to gold, to Krugerrands, and to Maple Leafs, the fiat paper assets of our wealth, thus eliminating our counterparties.
We were entirely ready to have gold remove all risk of default.
We humbly asked the coin dealer to reduce our exposure to The Inflation Tax.
We made a list of those politicians that expose us to The Inflation Tax, and became willing to work against them all.
We gave direct support to Libertarians whenever possible, except when no Libertarian is on the ballot, and then we voted against the incumbent.
We continued to create wealth through our own industry, and then we converted it to gold, and promptly buried it.
We sought through silver coins to increase our contact with precious metal, as we understand silver to be a physical asset - not a paper promise, paying for as many day-to-day transactions with silver as possible, using our credit card (not debit) for what was not, and paying off the entire balance each month.
We, having had a fiscal awakening as the result of these steps, tried to carry this message to others, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.
