Dre Kirkpatrick: 'I never backpedaled' at Alabama
Rookie cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick isn't being asked to start right away for the Cincinnati Bengals . That might be a good thing.
The team's first-round pick excelled at Alabama, but entered the pros missing one important on-field skill.
"I never backpedaled," he told the Bengals' official site .
Kirkpatrick played a lot of press man coverage in a Cover 2 scheme under Nick Saban. He said he wasn't asked to sit back and read receivers on their routes. All of this has made his first offseason in Cincinnati an adventure.
"It didn't look pretty," Kirkpatrick said of his first three days of practice with the team. Coach Marvin Lewis and his defensive staff are impressed with Kirkpatrick's development, but he won't be rushed into action. The Bengals are knee-deep in defensive backs. Leon Hall and Nate Clements should be ready for training camp after dealing with injuries this spring. Terence Newman and rookie Brandon Ghee are in the fold. And don't forget about Pacman Jones.
It's not unusual for rookies to hit the pros with holes in their games. The team would rather coach Kirkpatrick in its scheme than shake out bad habits. It's been a long time since we've been able to say this --because the Bengals are finally deep -- but the rookies on this team aren't being asked to save the day.

What happened to all the "pro style" defensive coaching and schemes we all hear about?
-
"I never backpedaled,"
WHAT!? Thats so fucking off I can't even belief he said this shit. This is fundamental. FUNDAMENTAL!

So, you think he lied? Forgot how to do it? Forgot he was coached to backpedal? Or do you think he really backpedaled but the Bengals coaches don't know it when they see it?

Not sure what to think of it. I just can't believe that he "never" backpedaled or asked to while at Alabama. Maybe this is the case but then I have to ask if any of his other coaches coming up taught him this fundamental. I sort of think Dre is full of shit. Like I said, backpedaling is fundamental even from the early days of PeeWee.

I know a QB who hardly ever took a snap from under center. He turned out OK.

Do they do backpedal drills? Yes, it is fundamental footwork like you said. Their man cover technique is a kick-slide, and burst technique. On their zone drops they turn their hips. So, yeah they do backpedal, but they don't use it in cover techniques.

I know that QB, and he says Dre Kirkpatrick is a punk ass, cry baby bitch.

So, the Bengals used their 1st Round pick on a player that they'll have to coach up, in a position that's "deep". Good job Bengals, way to waste your first round pick...
Also, I snickered at this remark...
The team would rather coach Kirkpatrick in its scheme than shake out bad habits.
Bad habits like smoking and getting busted for ganja? Yeah, good luck on that, lmao.

DB's don't back pedal when they play a Man 2 press. It's why they call it bump and run, not bump and back pedal.
I am pretty sure that there wasn't a lot of press man in pee wee ball...

I could care less about what coverage it is, and yes I know the article was pertaining to a particular defense scheme. What I am saying is that Dre is saying he was never coached to backpedal in this certain coverage. SO WHAT? Like Dre had never backpedaled before? So is he being asked to do something that he has never done before? I would certainly think not. So whats the problem then?
Somebody get me a damned depth chart!

It appears to me from the article that the Bengals regard him as "lacking in some techniques". At least that's the way I took it.

Thats basically what I saw in the article. Either way, the boy got him a big money contract so I really doubt he cares what I think.

Looks like Dre Kirk wasn't lying when he said that he didn't know how to backpedal....broke his leg while learning how to backpedal.
So, explain to me how you get labeled as â€one of the nation's Elite Cover Corners,†but not know how to backpedal at all?

I'm pretty sure you get labeled as one of the nation's elite cover corners by being a pretty damn good cover corner. Which he was. Not the best in the entire country or anything like that, but pretty good. Cam Newton had to learn how to take snaps from under center when he got to the NFL. I didn't see anybody scoffing at that. I just don't see where it is so shocking that somebody who played bump and run 99% of the time can't backpedal worth a shit.

First off, he's overrated (not because he's a former uat player). Secondly, being a CB you're taught how to backpedal in Peewee Football. As a baby you learn to talk, walk and then backpedal in that order. Michael Jackson knew how to backpedal and he was far from considered a â€Cover Cornerâ€. $5 says that Coach midget lied to Coach Lewis about Dre's abilities...just like he led to him about Andre Smiff's.

In college ball, I don't think he was overrated. In the NFL, he hasn't even made it to training camp yet. For that matter, I don't even think anybody expected him to start this season. I don't think anybody expected him to go in there completely NFL ready either. He was the 4th DB taken in the draft. So it's not like anybody thought that he was so insanely talented that they just HAD to have him in the top 10 or anything.
And if Kirkpatrick was so horrible that the only reason that the Bengals took him was because Saban lied to them, then they are fucking retarded and need to fire whoever scouts talent. But you were talking out of your ass anyway, so I'm not even sure why I addressed that part of your post. Or any of it for that matter.

Oh contraire, your goatness. Cam Newton was picked apart by virtually all the "Experts" saying he would be a bust because he'd never really been under center.

This is what was the most troubling to me, not that I give a shit about Cincinnati, but I too was like :wtf:

I meant to say "anybody here", but I understand your point regardless.
