Title: A Confederacy of Dunces
Post by: Townhallsavoy on June 07, 2012, 12:14:51 AM
Just finished reading it.  Great book.  Kind of a poor ending.

But I really came here to post this:

http://collider.com/confederacy-of-dunces-zach-galifianakis-james-bobin/168106/

Quote
Zach Galifianakis Attached to Star in A CONFEDERACY OF DUNCES; James Bobin in Talks to Direct

Three different times - including when I put the book down ten minutes ago - I thought, "I wonder why this hasn't been made into a movie yet."

And also, three times I thought, "I wonder who could play Ignatius Reilly.  Zach Galifianakis certainly looks the part, but my God I hope they don't give that dolt the role."

And here we are.  Just announced 15 days ago that Galifianakis will most likely play Ignatius Reilly.

If I plan to avoid every single movie being made out of one of my favorite books that involves piss poor casting, I may never get to go to the movies again.

Even if - EVEN IF - he was not such a shitty actor, there is NO FUCKING WAY he captures the Yat accent of N'awlins.  And that is absolutely critical.

You cannot tell me that there is not some local NOLA actor available.

Fucking Hollywood.

I'm here to tell you you're all wrong.

First of all, Zach Galifinakis is hilarious. SECONDLY, Ignatious is the only character that doesn't really have to have the Yat accent. Now his mother? Yes, absolutely.

Ignatious is supposed to be eloquent and snobbishly annoyed by the ignorance of everyone around him. No one could pull that off better than Galifinakis. They prevously tried to make this movie with Belushi, John Candy, and Will Ferrell. Now those would not have fit. Ignatious requires a certain dry wit that I can't think of any Hollywood actor who is better suited to pull it off.

The actor for Ignatius needs to be pedantic.  An erudite articulation.  Cynical to the point that he can cut glass and robust to the point that his boisterous appearance captures the attention from everyone nearby.

I do like Galifianakis in Between Two Ferns.  But as for Ignatius?  Doesn't fit.  Perhaps he'll surprise me, but he's too short, too aloof, and too sporadic to give me any hope.

Now this guy could pull it off:

A pretentious Yat.  Where would he have learned to speak anything other than Yat?  That's part of the hilarity of it - that he is acting all snobbish, etc. with that Yat accent.

The three you mentioned would have also been a train wreck.

Zach Galifinakis is hilarious because of some else's writing.  He himself is not funny.  He is now stereotyped into the Hangover role - the loser Mom's basement dwelling moron.  That WAS funny - the first time.

Alan from the Hangover would not work as Ignatious. Zach Galifinakis from his stand up and from Between Two Ferns? Perfect for the part.

I'd love to see a clip from his stand up or Between Two Ferns that shows his ability to deliver a line like this:

Quote
Your total ignorance of that which you profess to teach merits the death penalty. I doubt whether you would know that St. Cassian of Imola was stabbed to death by his students with their styli. His death, a martyr’s honorable one, made him a patron saint of teachers.

Pray to him, you deluded fool, you “Anyone for tennis?” golf-playing, cocktail-quaffing, pseudo-pedant, for you do indeed need a heavenly patron. Although your days are numbered, you will not die as a martyr—for you further no holy cause—but as the total ass which you really are.

I get the "Need name recognition" thing when casting a part in a high budget or high profile movie.  But everybody had to act in their first leading role sometime.  TRY SOMEONE NEW, DAMMIT!!

Just like Tom Cruise in **EVERYDAMNMOVIETOCOMEOUTOVERTHENEXTFIVEYEARS**, having a "big name" is not the only thing that makes someone go to the movies.  I would not be one to go "Oh, it's a new Tom Cruise movie." and not pay attention to the plot.  I would think "Oh great!  They made Confederacy into a movie!!"  This is why I get so pissed at TC for interjecting himself into every movie he can get his hands on - he is just not that versatile of an actor, and there are undoubtedly others who could do a better job.  But he is a household name... and ruins the movie.

A few stereotyped actors are like that - "Oh, it's the new Will Farrell/Adam Sandler/Robin Williams movie..." but they are almost always comedic actors and they play a familiar role everytime - they found their niche.  You aren't paying to watch the movie for the plotline.  You want to see them do and say stupid stuff.  (Yes, I know there are a miniscule number of exceptions when one of them tries to do a serious role, but they are generally box office flops... thereby supporting my point)

Mine is refined.

Funny:  Richard Pryor. Cheech and Chong. Chris Rock comedy routine (not Chris Rock in movies), Dave Chappelle, Bill Murray, Chevy Chase (usually), Letterman (over Leno), Conan (sometimes), Tina Fey, The Office (years ago), Frasier, Seinfeld Show, Andy Griffith Show (when it wanted to be in B&W), Eddie Murphy (in the 80s for about two weeks), Planes, Trains and whatever, Home Alone, Breakfast Club, Raising Arizona, Ren and Stimpy, Bugs Bunny.

Not funny:  Will Ferrel, Zac Fartfingwhanackus, most of the people some folks think are hilarious, Adam Sandler (at all), any of the people in Grownups, Modern Family, any of the Family Guy/American Dad bullshit, Simpsons,  Tom and Jerry.

Breakfast Club was/is a great movie.  Good contrast of characters.  Kind of predictable like most of the brat pack movies were back then but the outcome wasn't the point.

You have zero taste.

Breakfast Club wasn't a straight comedy.  It was a movie that had a little of everything.  But the brief comedy bits were shitloads better than anything Adam Sandler or Zac Gumpingthebaccus has ever shit out in their lives.

Ferris Bueller the same way.

Cheech and Chong... that's a generational thing.  Probably like Harold and Kumar now.

Home Alone gets points for John Candy, Joe Pesci and the house-trap scene.   Not so much the kid or the family.  Pesci, the other burglar guy and all the traps.

Hmm.  Seems I appreciate John Hughes movies.  That's strange.

Not funny:   Simpsons

Your opinion on anything comedic is now dismissed out of hand.  The Simpsons has contained some of the most brilliant comedy of the past 20 years.  Nuanced, high-brow...The Simpsons ought to, by your stated preferences, be right up your alley.

Look, don't get me wrong, I like all of those things too...Well...I liked the first Home Alone when I was like 8 when it came out. And Cheech & Chong...enough said. Just hilarious that you look down your nose at Modern Family, Zach Galifanakis, Seth McFarlane, and the Simpsons as boorish, and then consider that high art. Or "refined".

And to include The Breakfast Club on such a short list of things you find funny is only laughable because it wasn't even a straight comedy.

I include the Breakfast Club because it doesn't fit any certain category.  Parts of it WERE comedy.

I also include Fast Times at Ridgemont High -- one of my ten favorite movies.  And I just realized that two of my top ten include Nicholas Cage which is  :cage:.    You drag Kick Ass, The Rock and Valley Girl in and the sonofabitch is in five of my top 40.  Damn.

Don't look down my nose, just don't find their schtick humorous in any way.  I quit watching the Simpsons about 20 years ago.  Amazes me that the damn thing is still on the air.  It had nothing to say then.

Shouldn't have really included Modern Family because I've never watched it and won't ever watch it.  There are limits to what I tolerate and that one crosses it.

I don't find Big Bang Theory funny either.  I never liked the show with Urkel, whatever that was.

Thought Airplane and Police Squad were funny.   Tucker and Dale vs. Evil was funny in parts.

Comedy is a difficult thing and it's usually very personal.  Can't usually get a consensus on comedy.

Sort of like farts.  Some people are amused by them.  Others are not.

I'm not the Nicolas Cage hater most on here seem to be.  Not saying even close to everything he's done is top shelf...it isn't.  But, I like a bunch of his movies, starting with Valley Girl.  I thought Con Air would have been twice the flick it was if they hadn't had Cage do that pathetic attempt at a southern gentleman accent.
