The three part mini-series will be on History channel starting tonight. Wondering if any of you will be checking it out? Its sparked my interest just a bit and since its only three nights I figured what the hell.

I watched the first part last night. Pretty decent IMHO. I will be watching the next two.
-
I have it on DVR, I didn't have time to watch it last night. I will start it tonight and then catch up. Looking forward to it.
-
I liked it. Didn't love it, just liked it. It did get my interest enough to watch the other two episodes. I'll tell you what though, these two families did.not.like.each.other. Too bad that lots of folks had to die over a fued that started from some bullshit butt hurt.

That pig started a lot of shit. Oh, and lets not forget, you never call a man out for fucking his own dog.
Reading some into the future of the show, the shit is about to get real. Lots of blood is about to flow.

Me: "I think I want to watch that... looks interesting."
Him: Kevin Costner is in it..."
Me: "Oh look, there's a Cake Boss marathon on..."
Cannot stand Costner.

Of all the bad actors and cliche performances out there today, and you hate Costner? Dude's a decent actor, but has picked some questionable roles over the years.
-
I agree somewhat on Costner. He is by no means my favorite actor, nor is he on the hate list. I just think that this particular type role fits him the best. So far he has done a pretty good job I think. The head of the McCoy family is one that I'm not really fond of though. Every time I see Bill Paxton in a movie, I think of Twister and "We're goin innnn". So far in the Hatfields & McCoys series he has done pretty well imo.

Agree on both of them. Neither are my fav actors.
Ive been kind of surprised by the performances so far. Give it a try TW. It has to be better than a bunch of Yankee Italians making cakes and screaming at each other.

Costner + Bull Durham + Open Range + Waytt Earp + JFK + Thirteen Days = decent
Costner + Water World + Bodyguard + Postman + Tin Cup + 3000 Miles to Graceland = shitty

I thought he was awesome in The Big Chill.
-
It took a while for me to get into it, but by the end of the first episode I was hooked. Will definitely be watching the next two.
-
Costner uses the same tone of voice, the same inflection in his words, the same vapid stare, in every role. He was the only one in Robin Hood who was not in English character - probably because he could never have pulled it off. That indicates a lack of range. He is just like Tom Cruise - he bought the rights to these good movies and then fucked them up by casting himself.
I like Paxton. But when I see him I think of him as Hudson in Alien: "That's it man, game over man, game over!" Trivia fact: Bill Paxton is the only actor to have been killed by Alien, Predator and Terminator.

Best part of that whole movie is when the Marines are coming in and everyone is all stressed out except for the character played by Michael Biehn. In true grunt fashion he is sleeping and someone says "Somebody wake Hick's up."
You ought to check out Bill Paxton in this movie. Funny shit!

He's awful. Just plain out awful. The only thing I thought he wasn't completely shitty in was 3000 Miles to Graceland...where he had a supporting character role.
Other than that he sucks the root.

hey hey....
He successfully prevented any bad people from getting to Whitney Houston. No one else can claim to have done that.
-
Costner is okay in a lot of stuff but like TW said, he sounds the same no matter what role he's playing.

Lucky for him nobody did any acting in that movie.

It's like I don't even know you anymore! Thought that was one shitty movie and one shitty performance by all involved.
Open Range he was decent to me, but when you have the GOAT actor in Robert DuVall as your support it's nearly impossible to fuck it up. Also: Well, I believe in the soul, the cock, the pussy, the small of a woman's back, the hanging curve ball, high fiber, good scotch, that the novels of Susan Sontag are self-indulgent, overrated crap. I believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing Astroturf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days.
was quality. Other than that, I agree, he is meh.

People? Sure. But he couldn't keep the crack from getting to her.

I can see we are going to have to fight.
First of all, the speech in Bull Durham was awesome WRITING. Even his shitty delivery couldn't fuck it up. And same movie...I have never heard anyone completely destroy a line like, "fuck this fucking game." How, do you fuck that up? Awful. Fucking awful.
3000 Miles was not a great movie...but I liked it. I especially like that he didn't give himself the star/savior role...he actually did something different. Closest he's ever come to acting.
I do agree about Bobby DuVall.
-
What about Dances With Wolves? It was just Costner for 4 straight hours. Classic.

I thought he was decent in Bull Durham. Not great, but decent.
That first part makes me die a little inside.
The second part makes me <3 u all over again!

The nutless one first brings delicious coke product into a manly realm, and then he glorifies Dances with Wolves. It's like you think you know someone.

Considering his questionable choice in mixing delicious coke product with fine burrbinz, I am not surprised at his choice in movies. Speaking of which, reminds me............

I watched the first one again and then the second one last night. It appears more and more to me that the Hatfields were some smug, underhanded shit starting little fucks. Even going back to when Anse and Randall were in the Civil War battle. The underhanded comments Hatfield made during battle and then being a deserter and walking out on the war to go back home and profit while they all fought on, and Uncle Vance killing Harmon McCoy afterwards, primarly because Harmon told townspeople that Vance fornicated with his hounddog (which wasn't a lie). I can see why Randall McCoy was pissed. The Hatfields were a bunch of pot stirring asshats that dished it out but couldn't take it.

Yeah but the McCoys act like some for real pussies. In the end, I'm going with the SEC on this one.
-
Still haven't watched but from reading on it before I will have to say that the Hatfield's started the shit over the nephew that served for the Union in the War of Northern Aggression and stealing the McCoy's pig. Both share a lot of the blame though for how it carried on though.

I thought that kind of too but then thought it may have been because Randall McCoy was just that kind of guy. They make it apparent that he likes to do things the right way and is deeply religious. He seems to try and keep things on a civil level to a fault. He even scolded The bounty hunter, Phillips, for scalping skunkhead instead of just bringing him in.

I like Randall but the three boys that got that ass shot up, and the two bit lawyer, were more at fault than Jim Vance imo. The only real questionable thing I have with against Randall is how he did his daughter. Thats was some bullshit.

According to others, not the history channel, Randal McCoy was considered somewhat of a gossip and was thought to have been jealous of Anse Hatfield for his success. I don't know so much about wanting to do things the right way, he did hire a bounty hunter to go after the Hatfields who I don't really think was on the up and up. I will agree that he seemed to be a better person than Anse Hatfield though.

He was a bit envious but it was for good reason. Hatfield deserted the war as a soldier. He left the rest of them to get captured into a POW camp while he escaped back home to profit off a demand during war time. He ran out on his fellow soldiers during battle - thats a huge no-no in my book. I would have been pretty pissed too. Hatfield seemed real political and full of himself. Basically Randall McCoy already wasn't fond of him - then when Vance killed Harmon and the McCoy pig was stolen, and nothing was done about it, they decided to retaliate. Even the bounty part was all because Hatfield wanted to be a vigilante and shoot up the three sons instead of going the legal route when the sheriff was trying to arrest them. Nevermind his brother was the judge who orchestrated that in the woods when they caught em.
-

I my fav in the show is Cap Hatfield.

I have read several things on this and I have never seen it stated that he deserted the war. I know he left the regular army to turn guerrilla, but maybe he did. Is that in the movie? I just don't think Phillips was on the up and up and personally would have went after my sons killers myself back in those days, but still agree that Anse was an asshole. Then again that may be the thing I like about him. Reminds me of me. :)
I think his dislike of Hatfield was more over the way that he got some real estate through the courts that belonged to one of McCoy's cousins or something like that. The funny thing about the pig resolution was that McCoy would have won the case if it hadn't been for testimony by his own relatives against him. Both of them were stupid beyond belief and should have put an end to it earlier.

Yep, Hatfield was well connected politically, had a relative for the judge and got away with a lot. Many (not just McCoy) disliked him. They pissed a lot of people off with their smugness and attitude of running the show.
Yeah, the pig case was funny to me. His own drunk relative cost him the case.

In the show, Hatfield deserted the war and went back home to make a killing with the lumber. Lawyer McCoy went to Anse with a document stating that Hatfields land had actually been given over to the McCoys; with a signed witness. Only problem is the witness had died two years earlier than the document had been notarized. Anse had the tombstone to prove it. This pretty much opened the door for the Hatfields to get the timber rights to all of the McCoys land, 5000 acres I think. Since Lawyer McCoy was still getting his name, such a forgery would have screwed his law practice for life.

I need to watch this so I can compare the movie to what I have read before. I will wait until I have all three and fast forward through the commercials and watch it all in one sitting.

So far comparing them side by side, its pretty spot on. Of course Hollywood always takes minor liberties to make things more interesting in a movie, but the general story seems spot on. I read up on it before Episode 1. Tonight, lots of people will die. Its gonna get ugly.

Well, I sat and watched about the entire series last night. It was definitely riveting stuff. The acting was great, the setting was awesome and I knew I was going to watch it til the end. A couple of problems for me were first, I had a hard time figuring out what klan I was watching. The story really jumped around and had no flow. It was like one minute, they're in the sheriff's office talking about bounties and they immediately switched to a big shootout in some open field. Couldn't tell who was shooting at who or why it started in the first place. And just when you think 3/4 or 67.3% of one klan gets kilt...they show up with 20 riders in the next scene.
Still, I enjoyed it overall. And Costner is one hell of an actor...in everything he's ever done. Everything!!! Okay, I keed.

Excellent final episode. We got to see Hatfield finally coming around to his senses and realizing the whole thing was stupid. He also apparently found his peace and religion. It also appears that McCoy never recovered mentally from losing that many relatives at one time. The New Years Eve massacre sent him over the edge and he never got normal again. Sad story really.
-
I agree. The last episode was pretty good, and a pretty good finish to a crazy ass story. Something ruthless sombitches I tell you. I did find out that a good portion of what was in the story came from Cap Hatfield. There is a book out there called 'The Tale of the Devil' if any history buffs want to check it out.
