When Eric Ramsey cried racism, Mike Pelton cried foul
Written by Jeremy Henderson Football, Sports, Vintage Dec 19, 2011
Former Auburn defensive back Eric Ramsey was causing controversy on the Plains even before coming forward about his pay-for-play relationship with Auburn boosters.
In June 1991, Ramsey wrote a sociology term paper about the “living hell” he endured as a black football player at Auburn. The paper alleged that Auburn coaches were “racist and condescending to black players” and that Sewell Hall, the athletics dorm, was segregated.
Former Auburn defensive tackle and current Auburn defensive line coach Mike Pelton had no idea what Ramsey was talking about
“I don’t agree with Eric,” Pelton told the Auburn Plainsman in 1991, his freshman year. “We pick our own rooms or they are assigned by position or hometown. Everybody gets an equal chance. I hadn’t really noticed any racism on the team.”
Pelton wasn’t the only one.
“Everybody loves everyone around here,” Lou Priester, a white junior wide receiver, told the Plainsman. “We get along fine. We’re like one family.”
By 1991, black and white players had been living together in Sewell Hall for more than 20 years.
“Eric was a great guy,” Priester said. “I don’t understand where he was coming from.”
Corey Barlow, a black junior defensive back, didn’t care where Ramsey was coming from, or where he was going.
“Eric is gone,” Barlow said. “We’re just trying to get on with the season.”

I lived in Sewell the spring before Eric got there. I had my roommate assigned to me. Big walk-on lineman. Great guy. Very smart. And very strong. (no he didn't take advantage of me)
Mostly blacks lived with blacks and whites with whites, but anyone could request to change roommates at any time. All you had to do was talk to Rusty and he would OK it. Most people lived with what they knew or were comfortable with. There were some folks you knew not to put together. But as for as separating by race, I don't think it was intentional. The coaches tried to make everyone comfortable.
The real problem with this is that I don't think Eric even lived there. He lived with his wife and kid. And it was known to stay away form his wife. She was crazy.
We damn sure didn't have the same issues they have today. 11 o'clock curfew kept a lot of folks out of trouble.

I use to go over and study with Frank Sanders in the afternoon and damn near the whole team would be watching Days of Our Lives and Another World. They loved da stories.

At the small college I attended my Fr. year, I was buds with a couple of the B-ball players. They were the only guys on the hall that had a TV. I and several other guys on the hall used to pile in their dorm room across the hall to watch All My Children every day.
