Title: Emerging leaders for OC...
Post by: JR4AU on December 16, 2011, 06:41:49 PM
My buddy forwards emails he gets.  No skreets, pretty sure this is from rivals premium "Hot Board".   Each had a little blurb about why to hire, and why not to.  I didn't feel like copy and pasting it all.

1. Greg Anderson, OC, So. Miss
2. Al Borges, OC, Mich
3. Greg Davis, Former OC, Tex.
4. Jason Phillips, OC, Houston
5. Todd Monken, OC, Ok. State
6. Phillip Montgomery, OC, Baylor
7. Dowell Loggains, QB coach/Passing Game Coord. Tenn. Titans.

Discuss.

My take, from what I've seen about where they've been, video...ie their influences, numbers etc.

1. Greg Anderson, OC, So. Miss: looked at some highlights of them this year.  Looked at his coaching stops.  From the look of what they do, they run zone, and some inverted veer/power (just what we do with Frazier).  The passing game appears to be mostly straight dropback, and would very much resemble Air Raid, but I haven't seen a lot of them, so could be different.

2. Al Borges, OC, Mich: We all know Al, he's currently running his offense from mostly spread, but in the end he's Zone and Power, with Play Action Pass off it.

3. Greg Davis, Former OC, Tex.: Don't like a guy this old, and that was at Texas, and clearly passed over for HC in waiting in favor of bringing Coach Boom in.  Don't know what, but that says a lot to me.

4. Jason Phillips, OC, Houston:  Pure Air Raid, at least at Houston.  His recent past is pretty Air Raid influenced, but he has stops in the NFL as well.  No telling what he'd do when turned loose to do his thing.

5. Todd Monken, OC, Ok. State:  Ok. State's offense appears to be largely unchanged from Holgerson. IE Air Raid.  However, he has no Air Raid roots prior to this stop that I can tell.  Very diverse in his coaching history, including NFL.  Not sure we'd be getting pure Air Raid if he was given the keys to the offense.  Not sure he's been able to change much from what Holgerson left, and it speaks well of him IF he was forced to run something else other than his own, and was this successful.  Or it may be he was OC in name only.  In the end, who fucking knows.

6. Phillip Montgomery, OC, Baylor: Before Baylor was at Houston with Holgerson from 2002-2007.  The offense at Baylor is very Air Raid-ish (no surprise there...Art Briles first college job was under Leach at TT), though they throw the ball down the field a lot more than most Air Raid teams do.  RG3 averaged over 10 yards per attempt.   Of course, that could all be a product of having RG3 in the first place.

7. Dowell Loggains, QB coach/Passing Game Coord. Tenn. Titans.: Wild Card of the bunch.  NFL guy.  Passing Coordinator for a reason I'm sure.  Considered intelligent, but is young, and has never been an OC.

Anyone that says "Al Borges is who we should hire" needs to be shot in the head, shipped far away, then set on fire. Fuck, bring back Steve Ensminger. Seriously.

Iwould be happy with Anderson or Montgomery.

I'd be happy with Coach Luper as the OC/RB Coach or Co-OC / RB Coach / Running Game Coordinator. If Co-OC Running Game Coordinator, bring in Dameyune Craig as Co-OC / QB Coach / Passing Game Coordinator.

Yeah, Borges sux.

Anyone that would hire him needs to be ran out of coaching!  What a shitty OC he has always been!

What do you guys think of Dameyune Craig being our Co-OC with Luper?

More names per Phillip Marshall.

Blake Anderson - Southern Miss
Dirk Koetter - Jacksonville Jaguars
Kerwin Bell  - Jacksonville University
Brent Pease  - Boise State

I know Anderson has already been mentioned but I like this guy. We may be looking at a Co-OC type scenario with these other guys.

Which part the Co-OC, Anderson or both? I personally don't like the Co-OC bizz. I think that is a recipe for disaster. Have you even looked into the Anderson guy?

I just like playing the fail sound.

Don't like the Co-OC concept at all.

The USM guy doesn't excite me.  In all honestly I don't care who they hire.  It will either work or it won't.

None of them really excite me either but from the looks of all the list out there, the common trait is pass pass pass. Either Auburn coaches are looking for someone to handle the passing game as Co-OC with Luper handing the run game or one that is well rounded in both areas. Anderson fits that bill better that any of them except for Chris Klenakis who I put out there earlier. His name isn't on the radar apparently.

Yes and it's reported that Chiz has met with Anderson [spread?] at least twice, don't care for air raid or co-anything much.

^^^This.

I believe Chiz will actually interview the candidates, and pick a guy that will bring a philosophy he's comfortable with.   Then he'll let him coach.  The only criteria I actually care about are that the candidate have previous college or pro OC experience, and I'd prefer he be a young, hungry, go getter.
