Iron Bowl of intelligence? Auburn tops Tuscaloosa in brainpower

Auburn-Alabama-brainpower.jpgView full sizeThe City of Auburn ranks higher than the City of Tuscaloosa in brainpower, according to new data.
Who says the Iron Bowl is only about football?
According to the Birmingham Business Journal, the Auburn metropolitan area tops the Tuscaloosa metropolitan area in brain power. On Numbers rated local brainpower by using raw 2009 data from the U.S. Census.
The report, released Wednesday by On Numbers, found that Auburn was ranked highest in the state for cities with a population between 50,000 and 99,999. Auburn had a brainpower index of 20.7 to rank No. 30 among U.S. cities of the same size.
Tuscaloosa, home of the University of Alabama, had a brainpower score of 5.2 to rank 192nd nationally.
Scores were based on the percentage of adults 25 or older at each level of the following 5-step education ladder:
Adults who dropped out before high school graduation.
Adults who stopped their education after receiving a high school diploma.
Adults who stopped at associate degree or attended college but never graduated.
Adults who stopped after earning a bachelor's degree.
Adults who earned a post-graduate or higher professional degree.
Does Auburn win the Iron Bowl of brainpower over Tuscaloosa, or are there other factors these rankings haven't taken into account? Let us know what you think in the comments.

The al.com comments section are gold as usual.
Bammers irate at the "Barner biased" al.com, and pointing out the person that wrote the article is an Auburn grad.
Nevermind the fucking actual nationwide survey that it's citing...

There's some interesting information in there.
A whopping 68% of Tuscaloosa residents never got beyond Shelton State. Nearly half (42%) didn't bother with even Shelton State.
That's about the same as the makeup of the Alabama fanbase. 2/3 or more have never been on any campus, much less Alabama's.
Only about 43% of Auburn residents didn't complete a four-year degree and just 22% have no college at all. Again, it correlates with the football fanbase. Less than 1/4 of Auburn fans have no college degree and/or did not attend Auburn.
Without coming off as too elitist (I hope) those percentages absolutely validate the perception that the majority of Bama fans are uneducated, unwashed rubes while the typical Auburn fan is more likely to be educated, reasonably well spoken and more likely in a higher-paying job.
Proof. It rules.

Those statistics don't count cause Alabama was down those years.

Ive heard that on many occasion from people who HAVE NO EDUCATION PAST HIGH SCHOOL.
They'll see my ALUM sticker, etc and make a smartass comment to the effect of:
"Oh that explains it all, its that Awbren educashion you got. It all makes sense now how come you aint rite....huh huh huh.... Roe Tahhggdd"
Never heard that comment from someone who had higher than a HS Diploma/GED and that made more than 9 bucks an hour. Its usually someone who I barely know of or a stranger who is talking to someone I know, etc....Irony??

Study: Alabama city among 100 smartest areas in U.S. (photos)
The Auburn-Opelika area has been named the 44th smartest combined statistical area by Lumosity, a San Francisco-based company that creates brain-training exercises.
The study used data from more than three million people between the ages of 18 and 75 who had undergone Lumosity's exercises. The games measured performance through memory, processing speed, flexibility, attention and problem solving, and ranked the scores by location.
Ithaca, N.Y., topped the list on which Auburn-Opelika appeared, followed by State College, Penn., and Lafayette, Ind.
Like Auburn, all of the top areas are college towns. Ithaca is home to Cornell University and Ithaca College, State College is home to Penn State and Lafayette boasts Purdue University.
Love the lack of specificity in the headline. I'm SURE that would be the case if Tuscaloosa was that city.
They come in 164th.
Auburn, of course, is the smartest city in the state of Alabama.

Not to mention the unemp rate is ultra low and it's still a top 10 place to live by most accounts.

Compared to people from those other cities? Not insanely surprised.
In all seriousness, what is a major help to those top four is that there ain't shit in those towns besides the university.

I noticed I put Charleston, SC on the list by mistake.
Athens isn't on the list. Don't know if they're lumped in with another area in GA.

Having a handful of aggies present on that glorious day helped propel them into the top spot. They didn't drink mead or booty dance with hot midgets.
If that is what it takes to garner the top spot, they can have it. Debauchery has its own rewards.
