Title: On Turner Gill
Post by: Kaos on November 01, 2011, 07:49:03 AM
It appears that he may be returning to Oz soon.  He's definitely not going to be in Kansas anymore, Toto.

At some point in the near future the chorus from the I knew we shouldn't have hired Turner Gill crowd will begin singing their revisionist songs.

I would like to take this early opportunity to say "Kansas isn't Auburn. You can't judge him based on what he did in that shithole."

Discussion of bovines and headwear may follow.

I was a Gill supporter.  He didn't just forget how to coach.  Being in a shitty situation accounts for some. A similar thing happened to someone at ISU.  All that being said we hired the right guy at the right time.

Why derail a fun thread with your seriousness?

Reasoning here wasn't so prevalent when Chiz was hired, but should have applied.

What do they expect at Kansas? They do not invest in football there they way they do in basketball. I would imagine that's a hard place to recruit to. Did he change offenses? What's the reason for his failures there so far?

Count me in with the Gill supporters way back in last decade.

I was never on the Gill bandwagon.  I really wasn't that impressed with him at Buffalo to be honest.
My man for the job was Brian Kelley, and he has done nothing to change my mind about him since going to Notre Dame what the fuck was I thinking?

True, but Mark Mangino had KU winning 9-10 games a year just 2 years before.

Same cant be said for Iowa State. When is the last time they put together back to back 9 win seasons?

Gill would have had us going to several good bowls by now.

I think Kelly actually has done a great job. He is changing the culture at ND. If you go back and watch some Weis games at ND, you can see a difference. They were soft and uninspired. Kelly is getting them there, slowly but surely. Plus, their schedule wasn't too friendly this year either. I like how when they play subpar, he chews their asses.

Gill might actually be too much of a nice guy.

Yes. He is blaming the players for losses, acting like a Sabanhole on the sidelines, and putting support staff in peril. He's changing that culture alright.

He has done some of that, but it's not nearly as bad as the 24/7 news cycle makes it out to be. I had heard for 24 hours about how he talked about how good his recruits were and that he threw Weis' recruits under the bus. I was a little appalled. Then I actually saw his quote - holy shit. Overblown a bit? Yes. So I am going to reach here and guess that you work in sports media of some sort since you are buying that.

Just to clarify, what is Saban's record at Bama? Is he an ass? Yes, I hate the guy personally.  But some programs need that. There is no doubt they can both coach. How did a nice guy like Shula turn out? Bama and ND both needed a kick in the ass. Nice guy softies don't do well in today's football world at any level.

Not saying he's a softie but Chizik is a nice person by all accounts on campus.

Exactly.  Chiz strongly disagreed with the defensive delay of game call.

He'll just get Gus to tutor me. But will probably fail.

Anyone who thinks Chiz is soft has obviously not seen the jaw unhinge on the sideline ala Bill Cowher.

I'll admit that I was a Gill supporter mostly for the perceived ability to lure top recruits of any "color".  I am now glad that we hired Chiz and was always one of the let's see what he can do group.  I was even called a drunk poster for taking up the Chiz wagon early on.

Admission is the first step to recovery.

Step two is something to do with delivering whores to me.

Yup, me too.

I wanted Coach Gill, but then I had a buddy ask me would I want Coach Gill if Buffalo was (5-7).  I replied, nope. Then he told me to take a longer look at Buffalo's 8 wins. That's when I told Jumbo that maybe we should step back and see who he brings in as Assistant Coaches mind you, I wasn't initially happy with Coach Chizik being named...but after Coach Malzhan, I was close to being All In...then Coach Rock came in along with Troop-a-Lupe and Thig (heavy recruiters), that was all it took for me to get completely behind them.

As a fan I had to put my faith in those that do the hiring, believing that they knew what was best for Auburn. Chizik actually saying he would let his coordinators do their jobs kind of convinced me. Gill never got my interest nor did Chizik but when Malzahn was named as OC I became more comfortable with it.

I was excited about Tubs choosing Franklin. I just didn't expect the near mutiny that followed.
Tub's had a staff that had remained with him and he always seemed to tweak it with the appropriate addition.

Chizik is very proud of his staff staying intact. They recruit well and are energetic. That's the greatest difference.

This topic always brings me back to a place I dislike.
But it also makes me realize that we need to make some changes to stay competitive.
