The Arab Tribune

Arab High School teacher and coach Allen Long has resigned after an Arab police officer caught him and female student in a compromising situation while parked at Ruth Baptist Church.

Superintendent John Mullins asked for, and got Long's resignation Wednesday afternoon. A special board meeting is set for Thursday afternoon to officially accept it.

"I appreciate that Allen Long recognizes he made a choice that is professionally unacceptable," Mullins said. "I regret for the Arab High School student, for coach Long and for their families the exaggerated rumors that resulted from the incident reported by the Arab PD.

"I feel his resignation brings the matter closure, and I hope that closure allows normalcy to return to our school and community."

An Arab officer found Long and the student parked in his truck about 8:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 9. Police reported the incident to Mullins and AHS principal Patrick Crowder Friday, at which time Long was placed on administrative leave...

A state law went into effect July 1 making it a felony for a teacher to have sex with a student of any age and a misdemeanor for a teacher to have sexual contact with a student under the age of 19...

"It's been a tough issue for all involved. We are glad to reach closure," he said.

Long was hired in 2006 straight out of the University of Alabama, where he played linebacker and defensive tackle.

At AHS he was the defensive coordinator, taught weight-lifting for athletic PE classes and driver's ed. He also coached the freshman baseball team.

Hick sportswriter with a hick newspaper in a hick north Alabama town. This open comments thing could rival "Bear Cloud" from this past summer.

Maybe he should keep an eye out for his own program.....
