Title: Halfway through the season
Post by: djsimp on October 10, 2010, 02:22:47 PM
I'm gonna be honest, I did not see Auburn being ranked at seven and being the highest ranked SEC team at this point in the 2010 season. I did not see an Auburn QB right in the midst of Heisman talk either, and Cam Newton certainly is. Auburn sits right at the threshold of NC consideration as well. Of course teams ahead of us have to do some losing because while we might could jump some teams with wins vs the rest on our schedule, we're not gonna jump 5 teams. Since we all know who is left on our schedule, lets look at the teams schedules that are ranked ahead of us. I'm going to underline those that pose the threats to the said team.

#1 Ohio St - @ Wisc, Purdue, @ Minn, Penn St, @ Iowa, Michigan
#2 Oregon - UCLA, @ USC, Wash, @ Cal, Arizona, @ Oregon St
#3 Boise St - @ San Jose St, La Tech, Hawaii, @ Idaho, Fresno St, @ Nevada, Utah St
#4 TCU - BYU, Air Force, @ UNLV, @ Utah, San Diego St, New Mexico
#5 Nebraska - Texas, @ Oky St, Mizzou, @ Iowa St, Kansas, @ Texas A&M, Colorado
#6 Oklahoma - @ Mizzou, Colorado, @ Texas A&M, Texas Tech, @ Baylor, @ Oky St

Boise St obviously has the easiest out of all but I think Nevada will do us all a big favor. Thoughts?

If Auburn just happens to go undefeated and gets the shaft again, riots will ensue.

What would be weird is if we did make it to the NC game and played Boise. Didn't Boise go undefeated in 04? :)

Like I said to Prowler, you guys will be wishing for some style points against teams like UK, etc in retrospect if this happens. But, if you use the "Prowler BCS Formula", they will calculate all of the BS calls on AU, all of the no calls on the opponents, throw out any run over 15 yards against AU, and AU should be fine!

If we went by the Prowler formula, the season would end today and Auburn will be NC no questions asked. Oh, and bama would be moved to a D2 school.

I hope Nevada beats Boise at the end of the season, that would knock them back.
Then again, I hope they go undefeated and get left out of the MNCG just to hear them whine.
The SEC west has 4 teams in the top 12-13 in the country right now. Wow. Has that ever happened before?
We are our own worst enemy, because we are gonna beat up on each other. The west may send a 2 loss team to the conference championship game this year. The meat of the schedule is just now coming up for most of our teams.
Whatever other conference gets a team in the MNCG, I feel like there are at least 5 SEC teams that could whup they ass.

True that. The SEC West is crazy good this year and SC is obviously the team to beat in the East. I could def see the SEC championship hosting two 2 loss teams. Auburn, Alabama and Arkansas could hang and beat with anybody in the country and whip a lot of asses.

The ESPN talkin' heads have started simply saying Miles an evil genius that does things unconventionally, not that he's lucky...seems they decided that nobody can be that lucky, so he must be a form of good that nobody's ever seen before.

As much as I criticize USC and Lane Kiffin, I think they'll beat Oregon in an attempt to salvage their season.  Also, Arizona and Oregon St won't be push overs.

Boise State doesn't deserve to sniff the BCSCG.  I just can't justify it, but I know voters will.  They still need to be one of two undefeated teams left, so I don't think they would affect us at all anyway.  If we have one loss, we won't have as solid an argument to be there.

What scares me the most is Oklahoma and Ohio State.  With Florida State turning it on, I really think Oklahoma will get a lot of hype for that win and have a straight path to the BCSCG.  They'll finish out the season strong with victories @Texas A&M and @Oklahoma State.  Then they'll win the Big 12 against Nebraska, which easily bumps them into the BCSCG spot.  Ohio State is a lock as well.

The same could be said for Nebraska, but I think we'd have a better chance jumping them rather than jumping Oklahoma.

I agree with your Oregon assessment for sure. They have too many chances to get beat and I think they will lose atleast one. I still think Nevada has a good chance to beat Boise. I also think that Mizzou will take out either Nebraska or Oky. Then there is TCU, if Utah is all they're cracked up to be, that will be an interesting game.

Sorry. Arkansas is my #12.

It's only right by the transitive property of SEC common opponents.

You're right there with the national media.
I don't think that we're a top ten team right now.
We're better than the also receiving  votes of the last decade, though.

You know I agree with you on a lot of things, but you guys didnt exactly get style points against Auburn and Tenn last year. Both games won in the final 1-2 minutes. A win is a win honestly in the SEC. It isn't like we beat South Dakota State 17-3. Wait...what?

But we weren't necessarily on the outside looking in. We became #2 in week 6. We stayed #2, and then we beat #1 in our championship game. Totally different scenario from AU in 2004. In the end, the style points weren't needed because we were #2, and we beat #1 in the last game both teams would play before their respective BCS bowl game.

This was kind of my point at the initial post, not necessarilly that was need style points but the fact that we're coming from such a lower ranking. Besides the fact that Auburn would have to win the rest of the SEC, which is hard in of itself, we will need some help by others losing. I do think we can jump maybe or two in the process especially going undefeated. I certainly see from the list that all the teams in front of us will have some test and could get beat. One thing that offsets style points a little bit is Cam Newton. No this in not a homerized statement, I'm being serious. If he keeps doing what he does and continued to be in the Heisman talk, this give AUburn some attention.

If we get through the next 2 teams unscathed....and that is a big "if"  I believe we will jump to at least #3.   We gotta beat Arky first though, otherwise it's a mute point.

Good pix.  Not one of these teams can really say they've distanced themselves from the others with blowout signature wins.  Ohio State is just now starting to get into their real schedule. Nebraska has had some good wins but has looked lethargic against a couple of teams.  Auburn has had a legit schedule but keeps squeaking by.  Oregon may be the one that has handled their bidnezz better than anyone to date.

Just don't ask him to explain or justify why the picks are so ridiculous.
