ABC News Exclusive: Two Men on United Flight from Chicago Arrested for 'Preparation of a Terrorist Attack' in Amsterdam
Suspects Had Been Cleared Sunday by TSA in Chicago, Birmingham Despite Security Concerns
Aug. 30, 2010
Two men taken off a Chicago-to-Amsterdam United Airlines flight in the Netherlands have been charged by Dutch police with "preparation of a terrorist attack," U.S. law enforcement officials tell ABC News.
U.S. officials said the two appeared to be travelling with what were termed "mock bombs" in their luggage. "This was almost certainly a dry run, a test," said one senior law enforcement official.
A spokesman for the Dutch public prosecutor, Ernst Koelman, confirmed the two men were arrested this morning and said "the investigation is ongoing." He said the arrests were made "at the request of American authorities."
The two were allowed to board the flight at O'Hare airport last night despite security concerns surrounding one of them, the officials said.
The men were identified as Ahmed Mohamed Nasser al Soofi, of Detroit, MI, and Hezem al Murisi, the officials said. A neighbor of al Soofi told ABC News he is from Yemen.
Airport security screeners in Birmingham, Alabama first stopped al Soofi and referred him to additional screening because of what officials said was his "bulky clothing."
In addition, officials said, al Soofi was found to be carrying $7,000 in cash and a check of his luggage found a cell phone taped to a Pepto-Bismol bottle, three cell phones taped together, several watches taped together, a box cutter and three large knives. Officials said there was no indication of explosives and he and his luggage were cleared for the flight from Birmingham to Chicago O'Hare.
Once in Chicago, officials say they learned al Soofi checked his luggage on a flight to Washington's Dulles airport for connections on flights to Dubai and then Yemen, even though he did not board the flight himself.
Instead, officials say, al Soofi was joined by the second man, Al Murisi, and boarded the United flight from Chicago to Amsterdam.
When Customs and Border officials learned al Soofi was not on the flight from Dulles to Dubai, the plane was ordered to return to the gate so his luggage could be removed. Officials said additional screening found no evidence of explosives.
The two men were detained by Dutch authorities when the United flight landed in Amsterdam, according to the officials.
OK, so here's the thing. They technically did nothing wrong - no law against taping pepto bismol bottles together without explosives - even though we all know damn good and well what they were planning. Other than the huge red flag that would raise, and the rightful extra screening that they did in BHM, there were no grounds to hold these fuckers because our laws do not allow us to do so.
This is concerning on many levels. Do we turn into a police state and arrest these fuckers for what they MIGHT be planning to do in the future? Do we have to wait until they actually kill people, including, probably, themselves? How do you stop this kind of crayzee? You really can't. Note they are from Michigan, which has the highest Muslim population in the US, I believe. I hope the FBI has established a freaking new Hoover Building up there - if there is a terrorist attack again in this country, the odds are good that it started in Michigan, or at least the fuckers who do it have connections there.
Technically the people in BHM did their job. And it seemed like the system worked - these assholes got flagged and searched and followed every step of the way on their trial run for the journey of death. Now we know who these assholes are, at least. I think they should have been sedated while in custody and chipped like a dog - then we can GPS track their every move...

From what I understand from my friends who work for the FBI, this isn't too far from the truth.
And I think we should make it US policy to take all these guys, and just turn them over to The Mossad.

Obama thinks it is within their rights to tape things together. They should build a mosque next to ground zero in their honor. Whoops he supports that too.

I know it sounds like a redneck quote, but if they want so badly to meet Allah, then a toss out the back of a C-130 at about 35K feet over the Pacific should do the trick. If we are going to hold them all in one location, why can't it be on top of a volcano or right on top of the San Andreas fault line?

Pardon my ignorance, but I thought box cutters were on the no-no list after the 9/11 attacks, or was that just restricted to carry on luggage?

All this shit was in checked bags.
Even worse, the guy checked the bags on one flight, then he and his asshole buddy got on another flight - but they removed the bags since he was not on the same flight they were. Wonder if they were intended for some ground pounder to retrieve out of the cargo hold and stow the contents in the main cabin...

Arrested in Amsterdam = Out of US Jurisdiction.
Probably handed over to the CIA.
Next handed over to the Israelis. You will not ever hear about/from these gentlemen again.

General, General....
Next question...yes, you in the front.
Thank you, Sir. General, whatever happened to the two who were detained in Amsterdam after what appeared to be a mock terrorist run through?
What two men? Next question..you, on the second row....

Yeah, I am sure that was just coincidence.
And I guess an even better point would be "who, besides some bleeding heart liberal human rights muckraker type would even notice/care/give a shit"? It's like when someone steals drugs from a drug dealer. Who is he gonna call to report the theft? If fuckwads like these two vanish off the planet, who will care? Who will make noise? Who will go looking for them other than more terrorist types, and hey, we'll snatch them up too!
But you just watch - some idiot "human rights" attorney will fly to Amsterdam and go running around looking for his newest "clients". Does he not understand that the very people he is trying to "help" would just as soon kill his infidel ass as look at him? I would hate to know that I was being used by someone who would just as soon send me to hell.
Morons.

This is why there will be more attacks. An enemy (in this case a terror organization) constantly evolves changing it's tactics to what will work within the current state of restrictions. We cannot arbitrarily turn into a police state at risk of losing what bits of constitution we still have left.
Same basic issue with radar guns and radar detectors. With each advancement of radar guns comes an advancement with radar detectors.

These guys just need some 'Lawyers That Care.'

Now you are starting to come around my friend.....
-
The fact that our Birmingham guys didn't racially profile, illegally detain, and/or poke, prod, probe or take nude pictures of these guys during the illegal strip search is more than a little disappointing to me.

I think this could explain how the phones were allowed to pass through the Bham TSA screeners
"Mr. Nasser al Soofi enjoy your trip and Roll Tide"

AP source: Unlikely that 2 men plotting terror
WASHINGTON – The FBI probe of two men arrested in Amsterdam after suspicious items turned up in one of the men's luggage is finding they were probably not on a test run for a future terror attack, a U.S. official said Tuesday, casting doubt on earlier suggestions even as Dutch authorities held the pair on suspicion of conspiring to commit a terrorist act.
The U.S. does not expect to charge the men, a law enforcement official said. The two men arrested in Amsterdam — both traveling to Yemen — did not know each other and were not traveling together, a U.S. government official said.
