Through my extensive and exhaustive research (Sporting News College Preview while seated in the library) I've come up with one team that may, just may wind up being in the mix for it all when it's said and done. Nebraska returns a lot of players, including their QB, a big physical line and a stout D, despite losing Ndingydongy Su. The biggest factor for me though, was looking at the schedule. Texas looks to be the lone "big" game on the slate and but for one extra play in the Big 12 Championship game, Nebraska had them whipped. No Oklahoma any more, which is a shame. Growing up, there were always a few huge rivalry games I looked forward to each year outside the Iron Bowl and that was one of them. Not right X'ing out that game. Anyway, I see this schedule setting up nicely for the Pornhuskers. Weak, weak OOC and the always "Tough" Big 12..

my darkhorse pick is oregon state.
despite a daunting out-of-conference schedule, the beavers could be that team to make a run for the national championship. these guys have a solid coach in mike riley. two outstanding offensive weapons and a few guys returning that can play in the trenches.
the pac 10 will be down this year, again. what better year for the beavers?
ten years ago the mighty wood-mongers made an interesting run with tj who'syourmama and chad dick. they finished inside the top 10 and humiliated notre dame in the fiesta bowl.
well see...i hope not. my life would suffer.

Well, here's the thing. Oregon State has the opportunity to keep this whole BCS thing on a relatively sane path since they have both Boise and TCU in the first 3 weeks. Conceivably, they could have a huge impact on the national championship picture if they were to beat one or both of them. If, as you say, the PAC 10 is down, no reason any team with above average talent can't have that magical season and make its way through that schedule. With the exception of Oregon and USC (Not putting them in the average category just yet, too much talent) most of the teams look to be just that...average.

they seem to be more trimmed these days, especially compared to the rough patches of the wild 70's - some recent years it seems they are completely non-existent

It's like Demi Moore took all the Beavers and stuffed them down her pants.
