Werd on the skreets is that Flanigan did not react very favorably to his pops when he learned that he wouldn't be in the starting lineup to begin the season. Not sure what kind of suspension that would carry, but it appears the Tigers will start the 22-23 campaign the same way they started the 21-22 one...sans Flans.

Other than Johni Broome of Morehead fame, where will the steady point production come from? It looks like three guards, one mostly out of control and a guy who lost his hops and confidence in Flanigan. There are others who have had their moments as role players but steady they ain't.

I was following some live-tweeters of our exhibition against UAH last night and it would seem that the news of the demise of Flan's hops and confidence was premature.

Like jmar, I'm worried about where the points will come from. I guess collectively, they can overwhelm people with depth and wear them down. Once Chance Westry gets back, they'll be able to rotate as many as 11 guys. I'm really hoping Westry can give them a consistent outside presence from the 3. I'm not a fan of Jaylin Williams launching up 3's, which he does a lot of. At 6'8" 230, the guy should be wheelin' and dealin' around the rim.

Agreed on all counts. Same scoring lulls we saw last year. If Green and KD aren't hitting 3s we will struggle to score...but Westry could be the wildcard that Smith was last season.
Admittedly, I wasn't completely sold on Broome when Bruce got him, but he looks good plus he's got a post up game which Kessler never really had. If Traore comes around, this team will be dangerous come March.

I saw where we beat up on George Mason and I'm a little ashamed of that.
The guy is old. He has one of the most distinctive voices in all of film history, though. When I considered being a comedian/impressionist for a very short period of time, his voice was the first I chose to mimic and I actually was pretty good at it. He was great in Lolita (which I just actually realized was about a pedophile, so Hollywood has been promoting that shit for decades, hasn't it? I thought he was really good as the scheming defense attorney opposite Robert Redford in a movie I've always loved The Verdict. (She threw up in her mask. Now cut the bullshit and just say it: she threw up in her mask). He was also good as the Renfield-ish caretaker of the Salem's Lot vampire.
But the man is too old to be running up and down the basketball court. Actually, I just found out he's a democrat and has apparently been dead for THIRTY EIGHT years! How was he expected to keep up? Vote, yes. But make baskets? C'mon man.

That was fun. 46.6% from the field and just about errbody got some minutes.
Don't know why you futz around with Broome and Westry in that game when both could have sat and healed a bit. I'm glad they got the chance to play and gel with the team, but that was unnecessary risk.
And 60% from the stripe is going to bite our asses eventually.

Overall the percentage turned out well. However, against a good team, that dry spell in the first half will kill us. Sure, our defense was smothering. But all it takes is a quick whistle ref to erase that.
And the three point shooting in the first half was dismal.
Donaldson is QUICK on defense. Still a frosh, but he's gonna be a good one. Zep hit a few good ones, but I am not sure exactly where he fits in this season.
I keep waiting for Jaylin to make his move to the next level. He may be just what he is. Not bad, but he could be a monster attacking the glass. I like Broome, but we will miss Kessler no doubt.
Same as last season, if we get a consistent 3 point shooter, this team could go places.
For the third game of the season, not a bad showing. Felt like a cat toying with a mouse.

Yeah they beat Georgetown which was one of the weirdest teams to follow last season next to Penn State. The Cats have similar size, play good team defense and also struggle for offensive consistency. I do like our chances as well given we have a gaggle of guards to harrass the shit out ya.

The Fighting Pearls handled that business against Bradley. Cruised to a 21 point win. Could have been a good bit worse. They get the 5-0 Mildcats of Northwestern, who snuffed out the Flames of Liberty.

I know Wen and KD are going to launch shots...but them driving to the basket and drawing fouls was money in the bank and I kept wondering why we'd get away from a successful strategy.
Also, does anyone know why Donaldson didn't play?
All in all, a great resume win and more time against a quality opponent in anticipation of the season's start.

The Red Raiders are currently 5-4 with a couple of surprising wins over larger names while also failing against some lesser knowns. They lost their opener in a squeaker to Buffalo, beat a roster challenged Syracuse rather handily while also dropping games to Duquesne and Delaware.
They did beat teams of their own ilk in Brown, Monmouth and Hartford so they can't be taken too lightly.
And that's probably far more than anyone here might ever say about our coming opponent Colgate.

Fall behind to teams with near equal or better talent, get beat solidly on the boards and shoot poorly.
That gets you beat most of the time.
Williams and Johnson were off the mark and our bench just isn't contributing. Traore and Westry played 20 minutes and collected one rebound between them.
Moore had one of his better games though Flanigan still not progressing as was anticipated.
Broome gives us a steady presence but the team must rely on Green's energy to carry it.

Still, they played better than they have overall in like 4 or 5 games.
Fouls were a bit lopsided until they decided to even them out late in the game. Excited about Donaldson getting more time on the court though.

This team misses what we thought Flanigan would produce if he recovered. Just too many scoring lulls to whip the top flight teams.
Like Donaldson too. Maybe Bruce finds some sort of balance and the guard's make up for the lost points.

Saw someone on Twitter suggest that Cardwell oughta be set free to play the Horace Spencer role (4 & 5) and that makes a lot of sense to me. Having Stretch sit on the bench when he could be foul fodder around the rim is puzzling as well.

Contrary to what some of our football centric fans think, the sky is not falling. Part of being a new blood in round ball is replacing most of your good production every damn year. It’s the new norm and we are there. But the good thing about bb is you always get a few months to get all the new faces worked into the chemistry and figure it all out for March.

Only know from NAIA ball. You need a scorer that you can count on and you have to get him the ball. Auburn hasn't established that as yet. Too inconsistent.

Bruce needs to prioritize some shooters. We are elite defensively, but are multi-faceted on offense.

Honestly? Jabari and Kessler really masked a lot of flaws we have this year at the 2 and 3. We no shooters or no bb acumen at those positions. Athletes, hell yes but we need players. I hate hate hate to say this but Flan (gone anyway), Wen and Zep - maybe even KD - need to find new homes next year since they are all technically eligible to come back next year (few of them for the super sr 5th year). I think Yohan will come around, hes green. But we really need to retool at the 2 and 3 spots...BADLY.

2 things I noticed that changed from the uga game:
Flanigan was a man possessed. Looked like his old self.
Spacing on the perimeter was very different. Wendell had room and open shots. He made the best of it. Good on him there.

Didn't get to see or even listen but the minutes now look to belong to Broome, Williams, Flanigan and Green.
Team was noticeably better from the foul line and rebounded well so I guess it's just a matter of searching for a little extra production while playing scrappy defense.

The trend continued last night....more Flanny, more guard spacing. Took Wen a bit to get warm but he was good once he did. We may be ok. But Poor Yohan, heavens its hard to watch him look so lost.
And can y'all believe it but once we looked out of sorts to start the game - Lord Bruce did something crazy per advice from Prince Steven - he called a timeout to settle them down! And it worked. Says he is going to do it more. Hallelujah!

I think a LOT of teams would have a 75 game winning streak with the schedule those asshats played. Not to sound like an SEC honk but there is no way in hell the Zags even hit 30 with a typical SEC schedule. This is a strong deep conference now in roundball.

They're an odd team. Some headscratching OOC losses, but 5-1 in conference, beating: UF (x2), Mizzou, SoCar, and LSU. Lost by 9 to UK in Rupp, but no shame in that, really.
Hopefully we get more of what we saw Saturday (and the last 4 outings) and keep that streak alive.

we are going to keep having issues with teams with bigger more physical guards, and a coach that knows how to utilize them (Mike White, Buzz W, NIT Oates). Bruce has managed to adjust against teams where the guards are equal or lesser. We are a good but not great team. And I think for this year that is fine. Hopefully Westry makes a leap next year and Holloway can contribute next year. We cant put guards out there under 6 ft that cant shoot or drive. Harper and Brown were such exceptions in 2019. Bruce even eluded to this in the post presser, that our guards were smothered by Aggie's physical guards.

Gave up 45 in the first half alone. 49 is what we gave up to LSU in BR the whole game....yikes.

aTm had their scoring shorts on. They were hot as hell from the three the first half. Even with that, we held in there for a while. Again, it comes down to not having a three point shooter. Match just a few of those shots in the first half and you change the flow of the game. However, if you can't even put the ball in the basket and they continue to close their eyes and make every shot... At one point it was ridiculous at the shots they were making. Many of those defended well.
At some point it becomes unrecoverable. Tiny guards that cannot avoid a trap(of course the teammates were standing around watching also) and cannot hit a 3 are not gonna win you anything.
And I am sick of seeing JWILL standing around outside the arc. Get in the damn paint and ball! I would like to see him go mad like KD in the paint.
I guess what I am saying is, it was a shitty game by all.

I think you are confusing potential with top performance.
As a coach, you have to estimate what is my team’s average sustainable talent. Not how they can play at the top of their game. We are not an upper level talent team.
We cannot play our best every game. We see what talent we have when we can play at that level. But no team can sustain a level of play that is above their normal average. Other teams’ average level of sustainable talent is higher than ours.
We might see a great game here or there, but we aren’t at a high enough level to compete this season.
Maybe when we get some shooters we’ll raise our sustainable level back up to where we are accustomed to.

^^^This right here^^^ Winning on the road is tough enough, but a 39 to 14 disparity is virtually impossible to overcome. Yes, there were some stupid shots and turnovers down the stretch. We still let it get away. But call that game even remotely even, and the score is not close.

I think we get in the NCAA Tournament by the skin of our teeth if we can pull off 21 wins. Bamer, Rocky Top and Aggies are in and here's hoping our guys can beat out Kentucky if it comes down to only getting 4 teams in.

Very noticeable. Tons of phantom fouls and rage-inducing no calls. Even with as many FTs as we shot relative to bama, we should have been at the line at least a dozen more times.

Same exact spot we were in after 26 games in 2019. No this team doesn't have Chuma, Bryce or Jared nor do I think it has that type of chemistry but if this is an off year or rebuilding year? I believe a decade ago this is all we ever asked for - to make the tourney and be competitive. I don't think our ceiling is high just due to guard size but I think we can make a little noise and make things fun next month.

Sadly, after watching this team all season, I have no confidence that we can follow up with the same type of performance.
When we play at our peak, we are pretty good. However, a team cannot play at their peak every game.
But then again, stranger things have happened. I would love to see this team get in some sort of twilight zone and go off for a month!

For all its inconsistencies, this team is three baskets and some decent refereeing from sitting at 21-5 and discussing whether it's a three or four seed in the NCAA Tourney. When most prognosticators kept it at a seven or eight even after the three recent (frustrating as all fuck) losses? Not much reason to be concerned, I hope.
The only recent loss that really bugged me was A&M. That one got away.
We knew early on this team wouldn't win the SEC. Replaced too much. We knew it would have off nights. So reset the target - Spend the season getting better, play well enough to make the tournament and then play the hand that's dealt. Last year there was so much focus on winning the SEC in the regular season, the whole team (and us too) was out of gas by the time the tournament came around.
Not going to be the case now. Bruce Pearl knows it needs to peak at tournament time, and I honestly believe it will. Wouldn't surprise me to see it get hot, win a couple and make the 16 or the 8. It could also play like absolute shit and get bounced in the first. That would surprise me more, I think.
Don't know about you, but I'm kind of excited that the prospect of NOT making the tournament evokes anguish instead of blithe acceptance.

Beating them at home to end the season would be glorious but I’m afraid of how the team would react. I hope they wouldn’t let it go to their heads because it doesn’t mean a lot. I mean, I’d love it but in the grand scheme, the tournament is the prize.
We use the remaining schedule and the SEC Tournament as tune up. Obviously trying to win.
I trust in Bruce. We don’t have sweet 16 offense but that’s WT’s goal for this team.

I think we need to win out to make it. Taking a step back & being completely honest, I am not sure we are a deserving team this year. I still love to watch and am happy to support, but this is just a down year. Bruce will get us back on track I have no doubt.

That is equivalent to the undefeated season tubs had in football, yet we were left out.

I don't think we need to win out. Don't think we need to win anything (except maybe one in the tournament).
It wouldn't be good to get blown out by the criminal element in Tuscaloosa or the suddenly shaky Vols. Need to show better.
Even still, I don't believe the selection committee could find 67 teams better than AU. Yes, I realize that's not how it works. There are 32 automatic bids. That means we're competing for one of 35 spots. But about a third of the 32 are already in the Top 25 and were gonna make it anyway. So.
We might get a shit seed, 14, 15, 16 maybe. The biggest problem is that if it comes down to, say, us or KY at the end? Well, there's a big pile of shit on the bed now.

Not disagreeing, but we have other factors going against us:

3. When they fought back in it, they were very clearly playing with far more effort and we just let it happen.
4. There is hesitation on wide open shots when our guys aren’t running a called play.
5. Talent needs to be upgraded at all positions, save Broome.

I think the refereeing overall is crappy. Last night was no exception, but other than the head scratching debacle with Broome, it was about the norm. You have to expect some home cooking. Not A&M level cooking, but home cooking just the same.
But you'll never overcome it if down the stretch, KD Johnson goes 2-6 from the line, and Cardwell shoots an air ball from the stripe. Auburn was 15-24 in free throws. 62%. Bama was 24-31 for 77%. Hit a few more FREE throws, and we're talking about our seed in the tourney this morning.

I could not be more proud of the team than after last night.
That’s one of the gutsiest Auburn basketball performances that I can remember.
It could have gone either way.
This season has been disappointing because of a lot of the aforementioned reasons but beating UT at home and some SEC tourney noise would help.

Back in my playing days (at the student act), if we had a punk like that, He had to pick himself up off the floor until he learned better. We need an enforcer that can come in and administer the hard foul without going overboard. Maybe one of those white boys on the bench.

What happened in Turdscaloosa was inexcusable. Outrageous. Worst I’ve ever seen. Yeah maybe we could have hit a few more free throws. But for 17 straight minutes we were flat out abused. It changes the way you play. You can’t defend any more with your entire team in foul trouble and breathing in their direction drawing a whistle.

We closed a game out against a quality opponent! Best win of the season by far, and came at the right moment. If this momentum is channeled correctly, we could make some real noise in both tournaments.
My wife was excited for the win too. Watched the game start to finish with me. She’s gonna have the best 2 seconds of her life tonight.

I'll be happy if we get in, but realistically, no way we deserve it. We're 4-9 coming down the stretch, with one "signature win" over a Tennessee team who just lost one of their best players. We're 7th in a conference that really isn't very good overall. Hell, Vanderbilt is the hottest team in the league right now. If they beat Kentucky today, I wouldn't be surprised if they get the nod over us.
Again, I hope we get in, but I wouldn't be pissed if we didn't.

I agree. I'd like for us to go, but don't have a good argument that we deserve it. We have a lot of "almost wins", which has the same stink as losing. Haven't figured out why.

Agreed. The perception is that the SEC is down this year, but only because it eats its own in the conference schedule. Let's get some MWC, A10 or other win-fodder and see how we stack up.

I think the SEC is about as average a Power Conference as there is. Bama is the cream of the crop this year, and they lost to UConn by 15, Gonzaga by 10, and the worst team in the Big 12, Oklahoma, flat out went in dry. Speaking of the Big 12, the SEC was 3-7 in the Challenge.
Tennessee looked as skrong as anyone first half of the season, but they've been a whole lot of meh the rest of the way.
Kentucky? They've lost 10 games, including to USCe at home.
A&M has been the sleeper all year. Nothing impressive about them, but they just keep finding ways to win.
Having said that, there will certainly be one or two teams that make a run. There always are. Arky was that team last year. I think Bama went to the final 8 last year too. But I believe the notion we're eating our own, comes from the fact that the conference is basically a shit load of very average teams. Which is not a bad thing this year, because I think that's the case across college basketball.
Are there 64 teams better than Auburn? That's not the question, because 31 teams get automatic bids for winning their conference tourney. There's a tiny handful of teams who have put a little separation between themselves and the rest of the pack. IMO, that's Houston, UCLA and Kansas. The rest seem really average to me, and you could probably lump Auburn in there. If they don't, I won't lose sleep.

I thought Tre ended up right about where he should be. He was brought in to be a nice fit, not a savior. I always felt better about him in the game than Green. He has game, but he plays within the system for now. (as you would expect from a frosh) I think we see a more aggressive style of play next season from him.
As for the rest, you are wrong. They are doing great. We are guaranteed to make the final four(ty) this tourney.

BTDubbs....the matchup logic can be played all day long. Take Oklahoma, Zaga and their bad losses and good wins and run them on down the line and you'll have yourself twisted in a knot in about 4 mins trying to figure out who is really good. I hate Bama but Oklahoma was an anomaly. Our Final 4 team got the shit kicked out of it a few weeks before the tourney by Ky. Bama also beat Houston who was #1. We lost to Uconn last year before vaulting to number 1. And on and on and on..... 1$ to Stephen Bishop for the ouldes.

BTDubbs....the matchup logic can be played all day long. Take Oklahoma, Zaga and their bad losses and good wins and run them on down the line and you'll have yourself twisted in a knot in about 4 mins trying to figure out who is really good. I hate Bama but Oklahoma was an anomaly. Our Final 4 team got the shit kicked out of it a few weeks before the tourney by Ky. Bama also beat Houston who was #1. We lost to Uconn last year before vaulting to number 1. And on and on and on..... 1$ to Stephen Bishop for the ouldes.
