Title: Something I never thought I'd say...
Post by: wesfau2 on February 27, 2018, 08:57:31 AM
I've been so distracted by the AU basketball team's regular season performance that I didn't realize spring football practice starts Thursday.

This is a very good point.

Which, ironically, is something that I never thought I’d  say to you.

You are not alone.  I'm not sure though whether it's more about the basketball team or that I was happy to have a distraction from the gus short bus parade.

Funny, I've been so distracted by the FBI and NCAA investigation, I haven't noticed the men's team is good.

Also funny, because Auburn beat the hell out of it's two rival and they STILL played for the title with the assholeingest ones winning it, I forgot we even play football anymore.

But I haven't forgotten where I took a dump last so I have that going for me.

Good times.
I saw the same thing about practice starting early this morning while looking at Al Gore's invention.  Really pumped about our front 7 on D.  Had a dot  I am a gay twerker that has no balls!!!!  I also have no idea how to use the quote function to post stories, so I annoy the piss out of others.  I like male genatalia in and around my mouth. piece on who will be the next big pass rusher after losing Lawson and Holland in consecutive years.  Could be Big Kat but I have a sneaky suspicion that at some point this season, T.D. Moultry is going to become that beast.  Also can't tell you how important it is that Dontavius Russell is back.  That lathered me up as much as anything this off season.

Okay, this is just from looking at a ton of pics from the first practice....and getting all moist and lathered up.  I said T.D. Moultry will become the next big thing off the edge.  I stand by that.  But if pictures don't lie, Nick Coe is a skrate up beast.  Got a feeling he's about to do some (Sorry for the Bama reference) Jonathan Allen type shit.  The kid showed flashes of brilliance and yes at times, dominance last year.  He looks huge.  I think he's your break out player for 2018.

"He has a knack to do things when things break down. He's got a little bit of the gunslinger in him," Malzahn said Tuesday, the day the Tigers named Moseley its starting quarterback"

"I'm comfortable with Jeremy Johnson and I'm confident within him and the skills. I've got respect for him, and so do our coaches and players. Probably the way he handled the situation the last two years. He could have played for the majority of teams in college football. "

“You know, he hadn’t gotten a chance to in a game yet, but [he has] in practice situations,” Malzahn said of Franklin III Thursday night in his weekly appearance on the Tiger Talk radio show. “We feel good. He’s got a very strong arm.”

So pardon me if I shrug.  And yawn.  And pfffftttt.

I get exactly where you're coming from.  And this has absolutely zero to do with what CGM has to say about Willis or any other player. Just my arm chair QB analysis.  To me, Willis looks like that QB that if given the chance, or forced into taking over, would make people say a collective daaayyyuuumm.  I may be totally wrong (Was wrong once a long time ago) but he looks like someone with no fear.  He's definitely got some skillz and he's not hesitant to show out.  Honestly would love to see him get a start against one of our shitty OOC opponents and let him see what he could do.

Hey, the Foosballz Tigers just may take the crown this year.  It's AGE, the Allen Greene Effect.  Since he's taken over, the basketball team won the SEC, the baseball team is 12-0 and our softball chicks are 23-2.

Okay, Allen Greene doesn't actually play ball for any of these teams but damn it, I'm claiming the Allen Greene Effect.

Read a 3rd day practice report.  Not a lot of change except for switching Tashawn Manning over to the O-line to play guard.  Probably a good move for depth and the fact that he most likely wouldn't crack the rotation on the D-line.  Also, I think this was already talked about, but Noah Ighbinogaohobedo is playing DB this spring.

Co Grimes was singing the praises of Calvin Ashley at right tackle and they're still running the same guys on first team.  Ashley, Horton, Kim, Harrell and Tega Winnebego.  Really like that Willis and Gatewood are getting so many reps while Stidham is being held out.

Yeah, it's a good thing they are getting them now.  I really thought my man Igbo was going to be a star at WR.  Kind of hated to read he was making the switch, but maybe he will turn into a great CB.

I guess I've just gotten old and jaded, but I can't remember any time there was less buzz about spring training.

Maybe everybody is simply waiting for Tua to ascend into the clouds and be written in flame as the greatest quarterback to ever wear a jersey.

There are four pieces on al.com today about Alabama football or football players, including some crap about Alabama's trick play against Clemson (when was that again?), but nothing about AU spring training except a player laying prone on the field after an injury.  They haven't even started spring training yet.  God help us when they do.

al.com treats Auburn like I do the Oscars.

copy/pasta'd from seccountrydot I am a gay twerker that has no balls!!!!  I also have no idea how to use the quote function to post stories, so I annoy the piss out of others.  I like male genatalia in and around my mouth.

I like the premise of the article.  I just hope that if they truly have several talented backs, that they all get in the rotation and one back is not run 30 times a game.  I think Kam Martin was absolutely underused last season.  He produces every single time he gets the opportunity.  Anywho...

AUBURN, Ala. — Auburn football said its goodbyes to Kerryon Johnson and Kamryn Pettway and officially turned toward its future stars when spring practice started last week.
There’s a lengthy list of players seeking starting jobs in 2018, but that’s a good problem to have.

“The good thing right now is we’ve got some very talented running backs,” coach Gus Malzahn said. “We’re going to let them compete and hopefully get an order by the time we leave spring. I really feel like we have multiple guys that can do the job it’s just a matter of who can do the job the best.”

Malzahn and his offensive staff aren’t wasting time. Because Auburn started spring ball healthier than in past seasons, the coach is planning for his running backs to get hit more this March. The Tigers need to know who can protect the football and make plays sooner rather than later.
“That kind of showed [Tuesday]. You could tell he’s trying to pick a guy pretty fast,” linebacker Deshaun Davis said after Auburn’s third practice. “There’s a lot of good competition in that room. We have a lot of great players in that room. I’m excited to compete against them.”
Talk to various players or coaches and each one might throw out a different name first. Again, that’s not a bad thing three practices into spring. Malzahn has been careful with mentioning players to media, but has voiced his pleasure with the group as a whole.

Veteran players are keeping tabs on the running back battle, too — even in its early stages.
“Boobee’s in there. We have Kam Martin. He’s awesome. You can count on him,” H-back Chandler Cox said. “There are some of those young guys like Devan. They all want to compete. They all want to play. They’ve been terrific the last two days, just running and practicing hard. I expect them to do that the whole entire spring, and I don’t think they’re going to just lay back. The position is open for them. Whoever wants to play is going to play.”
Cox admitted he keeps looking back and expecting to see Johnson or Pettway. Those guys aren’t there, but the talent is.
While it’s going to be a while before frontrunners emerge, Auburn has faith in coach Tim Horton and the players in the running back meeting room. Besides, the Tigers have faced this dilemma before, and it has turned out well for Malzahn and Co.
“I think they can and I think just over the last five years or whatever there have been times where it was, ‘Hey, can these guys get it done? Can this group? Are you worried about running back depth?'” Malzahn said. “And if you look at our history, every time we’ve had somebody step up — and most times we’ve had two guys step up. We still feel the same.”

The source I read is crazy about some JaTarvious Whitlow from Lafayette. Recruited as a WR last season, suffered ankle injury and was redshirted. He's now 215 and described as part Kerryon but more physical like Pettway.
Size matters...especially with an offensive line learning to play as a unit.

There's no hiding or deception with Gus. He intends to pound defenses and little Barrett can't withstand that kind of punishment. He looks like a new fawn trying to stand after he's tackled.

Kerryon couldn't tote it full-time as a wildcat freshman but thankfully he bulked-up in the off season. And that's only after big-azzed Pettway logged a heap of carries in a shortened season.
We would have crashed and burned without a larger, tougher Kerryon stepping in.

Has to be a bigger body such as Whitlow.

And yet we do not hear much from Malik Miller. Every time I saw him run, he was bruising and productive. He probably will never get another chance unless by accident. Kinda like Pettway. Gus is always enamored with the flashy guy.

If you're admitting that you have several good backs, then why not look at Georgia (Fuck Georgia) and the way they use 2-3 backs every game. Sure, there are still injuries but not from a repetitive beating every Saturday.

I admit it too. Maybe not Georgia (Fuck Georgia) caliber but enough to have variety. Problem is everybody knows who is getting the ball. There's no element of surprise. We only have about ten plays, okay eleven when Chandler Cox does that corkscrew thing.

Kam Martin is averaging right at 6.6 yards per carry in his 2 seasons.  Love it when he comes in, but no way he can take the pounding Kam and Carry On took this past season.

Kam Martin is averaging right at 6.6 yards per carry in his 2 seasons.  Love it when he comes in, but no way he can take the pounding Kam and Carry On took this past season.
True. But he’s good for more than three carries a game!

Yeah I said Barrett in post above but meant Martin.

AUBURN, Ala. — Even with Jeff Holland’s early departure into the 2018 NFL Draft, Auburn football’s defensive line has a lot of confidence early in spring camp.
Junior defensive tackle Derrick Brown looks over on the edge to Holland’s former position of Buck, and he sees a ready-made replacement in sophomore T.D. Moultry.

“That’s the thing: We’ve got T.D. replacing Jeff, and I think he’s just as solid,” Brown said. “He’s definitely stepped up and played big these last three days of practice. He’s doing his job. You can’t ask much more of a guy than that.”

Holland recorded 10 sacks, 13 tackles for loss and 22 quarterback hurries last season as one of the most productive pass rushers in the SEC. By comparison, Moultry only had a total of 15 tackles — 2.5 for loss — and 1.5 sacks as a true freshman reserve in 2017.
Still, the Tigers have plenty of belief in the 6-foot-2, 240-pound sophomore from Birmingham, Ala. Holland made a similar jump from his sophomore to his junior season, going from a 2-sack reserve to a 10-sack starter who could declare early for the NFL.
“If you see T.D., you’ll pay attention to him practicing,” senior linebacker Deshaun Davis said. “He’s a freak of nature. Some of the things he does … he’s going to bring another edge to our defense because of his abilities.”
(https://res.cloudinary.com/cmgverticals/image/upload/f_auto,q_auto/h_452,w_640/v1511043195/IMG_0291_q6bl7t.jpg)Auburn defensive end T.D. Moultry is expected to replace Jeff Holland in 2018. (Benjamin Wolk/SEC Country)
Moultry is the hands-down favorite to replace Holland at Buck, especially after upperclassman Paul James III’s decision (https://www.seccountry.com/auburn/auburn-football-paul-james-iii-leaves-program-transfer) to leave the program. Moultry has been the first-team Buck so far in spring camp on a defensive line that returns starters in Brown, Dontavius Russell and Marlon Davidson.

“He’s just getting to a point now where he’s starting to hone in on his work, and everything is becoming much more crucial to him,” Brown said. “Every second you get a live down, every second counts to get to the quarterback.”
Finding another elite pass rusher is essential to Auburn’s defensive success in 2018. Under Gus Malzahn, the Tigers have struggled whenever they haven’t had a consistent sack presence.

Moultry has all the physical tools to do that in 2018. Defensive coordinator Kevin Steele said late last year that Moultry “doesn’t have a control knob, he’s got an on and off switch … asleep and wide-open.”
When Moultry turns that knob all the way to the right, he impresses teammates with his speed. In only three practices, he’s been able to showcase it to the fullest.
“He’s a fast guy,” Davis said. “He will allow us to leave the defensive end on the quarterback alone because he has the ability to put his foot in the ground and chase down the quarterback. We’ve seen him chase down [sophomore quarterback Malik Willis] a couple times already. His ability speaks for itself.”

By Tom Green (http://connect.al.com/staff/tgreen4/posts.html)
tgreen@al.com

Joey Gatewood (http://topics.al.com/tag/Joey%20Gatewood) has had an unusual perspective during his first semester on campus.
With Jarrett Stidham limited so far this spring while recovering from offseason shoulder surgery, Gatewood has had the opportunity to work exclusively with Auburn's second-team offense, as opposed to the third unit, through the first two weeks of spring practices while also learning from both Stidham and sophomore Malik Willis. His elevated status early on in spring practice has been a "good thing," according to coach Gus Malzahn.
"He's responded well," Malzahn said. "He's a smart guy. He's got all the No. 2 reps, which I think does nothing but help. He's a competitive guy, too."
Gatewood, a former four-star dual-threat quarterback who signed with Auburn in December and enrolled early. He spent the early portions of spring settling in and learning the base offense, with Stidham often standing not far behind him -- particularly during pace drills and 7-on-7's -- to give pointers along the way.
The 6-foot-5, 235-pounder has also worked with offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey on improving his passing mechanics (http://www.al.com/auburnfootball/index.ssf/2018/03/auburn_backup_qb_plans.html) as Gatewood adjusts to the position full-time after being used in a variety of roles at Bartram Trail in high school and, more importantly, learns the ins and outs of being a quarterback in the SEC.He's coachable," Malzahn said. "When Coach Lindsey has made points, he's carried it over to the practice field. He's got a very strong arm and obviously we already knew he could run well. But so far, so good. We've been impressed with him."

Watch Joey Gatewood, Jarrett Stidham and the Auburn QBs run drills during day 1 of spring practice (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iO97VFosivI)
That extends beyond the coaching staff, as Gatewood has made a strong impression early on with many of his teammates -- particularly the wide receivers he has been working to build a rapport with.
Eli Stove made the obvious comparison between Gatewood and former Auburn quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton due to Gatewood's size and physical tools. Malzahn has made that very comparison before, noting some of the similarities between the two but adding that there's only one Cam Newton (http://www.al.com/auburnfootball/index.ssf/2017/12/joey_gatewood_cam_newton_comp.html).
While Gatewood is his own man and is looking to find his place within Auburn's offense, the Tigers have been pleased with how he has done with the second-team offense this spring.
"I think he's got a strong arm," receiver Darius Slayton said. "He's a big kid. Just like any other freshman coming in, he's got some things to learn. But I think he's done a solid job so far."

AUBURN, Ala. -- As J.B. Grimes (http://www.auburntigers.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/jb_grimes_833439.html) looks to retool an offensive line that lost four seniors from a year ago, the young men standing across the line of scrimmage from his players are not making it any easier on them.
It's not been easy on the running backs either. Sure, JaTarvious Whitlow (http://www.auburntigers.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/jatarvious_whitlow_1046068.html) broke off a big run in Saturday's scrimmage, but he had to reverse fields just to find a crease. Plus, head coach Gus Malzahn (http://www.auburntigers.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/gus_malzahn_997761.html) hinted that it came against the second-team defense. Good luck finding any running room against Auburn's first-team defensive line.
There's a reason the defense fared better in Saturday's scrimmage. It starts at the line of scrimmage with one of the best defensive lines in the SEC.
"The defense did pretty good," defensive lineman Marlon Davidson (http://www.auburntigers.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/marlon_davidson_1001792.html) said. "(We) got some good things on tape, and it went as we expected with us coming out being physical, making tackles, effort and everything. It's how we normally do it always."
Davidson is joined up front this spring by Dontavius Russell (http://www.auburntigers.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/dontavius_russell_907448.html), Derrick Brown (http://www.auburntigers.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/derrick_brown_1017246.html) and Nick Coe (http://www.auburntigers.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/nick_coe_1021943.html). Between them, they finished with 174 tackles, 26.5 tackles for loss and 12 sacks a season ago. But what they do goes behind the number of tackles or sacks. They affect the whole defense by taking on double teams and getting pressure on the quarterback.
"It helps a lot," linebacker Darrell Williams (http://www.auburntigers.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/darrell_williams_974004.html) said. "Coach T-Will (Travis Williams (http://www.auburntigers.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/travis_williams_997759.html)) always tells us, `Take advantage of those guys because those guys will be gone soon, and you don't get a chance to play behind good guys like that all the time, taking up double teams and stuff like that.' It's good. It lets you play more freely. They free you up a lot."
The hope is that Auburn's defensive line will also improve the offensive line and help Grimes find the right combination up front.
It might not look that way this spring, but going against players like Davidson, Russell, Brown and Coe every day in practice will only make the offensive linemen better and more equipped by the time the season gets here and they're going toe-to-toe against Washington's defensive line.
"You know the saying `iron sharpens iron?' It's good competition every day," offensive lineman Marquel Harrell (http://www.auburntigers.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/marquel_harrell_973948.html) said. "Those guys are some of the best defensive tackles in the country, especially in the SEC, so going against those guys every day -- you're going to get better. You have no choice if you want to play."
"We do have one of the best defensive lines in college football," added Malzahn. "There's no doubt about that. But at the same time, we always strive to have one of the best offensive lines. That's the goal. We'll just see how things are moving forward."
So while the offensive line might struggle at times this spring, don't forget that they might not go against a more talented defensive line all season.
As for the defensive line? They'll just keep doing what they're doing.
"We're more experienced now with me, Dontavius, Andrew (Williams), Derrick and Nick Coe (http://www.auburntigers.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/nick_coe_1021943.html), and we all got years under our belt," Davidson said. "Now we all know how it'll go down in a game. Everything is going to come easy to us because we've already been through that. It's just like another day."

Sidetrack.
Watched Friday Night Lights (movie) again the other night.  TV series can kiss my ass.  I’d read the book (four or five times) and didn’t see any way a movie could capture its essence.  But it by damn did.  Great movie.  Just a fantastic film. If you ever coached high school ball you know every one of those characters. And you know it rings true.
Look for a half naked amber heard in her first film role midway through.
The scene where Boobie Miles packs up his gear and gets back in the car with L.V.?  I’ve seen it multiple times.  I know it’s coming. And still it breaks me.  Chokes me up.  Bad.
I wonder if that injury would ruin his career today as it did in 1988?
Did a little research.  Boobie had a rough life. Ballooned up to over 400 pounds.  Did time in prison.  He got a grand total of $1000 for his story being in print and his life immortalized on film.

Willis sucked.  Gatewood is as ready for prime time as I am. Horrible!!!  Willis could be a Nick Marshall clone if he could hit the broad side of my ass.  Kadril Frazha bad.  I left at halftime wondering why in the hayull I would drive over 2 hours to see that shit. What the hell is wrong with Malik Willis hitting wide open receivers?  Awful.  Whitlow is a playa.  Our D is top 10 in America.  Leg-A-Tron's brother is better than he was at this point.  Strong, accurate leg.  Outside of that, this was shitty ball.

I saw that and I was all like WUUUUUT?  As I've said before, I stopped reading anything into Spring games a long time ago.  At least as far as gauging how a team will look in the Fall.  But individually, you can get a feel for how that person will do.  If a DB gets his ass beat deep over and over....problem.  If a WR drops ball after ball....problem.  If a QB overthrows wide open receivers on all routes, long and short....big problem.  Maybe it was in fact, an off day.  Okay, I can live with that.  I think it's more the fact that I've had some high hopes for the kid.  He's looked like all he needs is some experience and he may be pretty damn good.  I wouldn't trust what I saw Saturday against Alabama State.  At least not throwing the ball.

Nope.  They're writing articles about how bad he was.  He was 8-20 for 45 yards.  In a Spring Game.  Dude.  Neil Caudle was 19-21.  He wasn't going against the 1st team D.  8-20 for 45 yards.  I "way over exaggerated"?  No, he "way overthrew" every open receiver.

I said the guy could be a Nick Marshall clone.  He's that talented.  But if he can't hit a wide open WR 12 yard away from him...

Nope.  They're writing articles about how bad he was.
He was no Stidham, but he got the ball close enough to be caught most of the time. And he stepped up in the pocket well. He is not a passer. He is a runner and he looked to have come a long way in the passing dept. if 81 could actually catch a damn ball...
Sure he looked out of place. But he was being asked to pocket pass:
Also, Gatewood looked pretty damn good for what I’ve seen of him before.
Neither are close to being ready, but it’s not the shitfest you said. If A day was live and the option was in play, it would have looked much different.
No way we can judge the othe QBs against Stidham. Two totally different animals.

I think Willis is potentially a great talent.  I really do and I've said it before.  But Saturday was about one thing.  Passing.  The "option" was not an option.  And he looked horrible.  You HAVE to be able to do both with this offense.  Nick Marshall could.  He could hit receivers with enough consistency to make what he did as a runner...lethal.  Willis looks great with the option.  If he doesn't improve his passing, he's an afterthought.

Saw him live in the scrimmage on the day he was named starting QB.  He was heads and tails above Jeremy Johnson and all others.  Quick.  Accurate.  Easily won the job and gave you reason to believe we had something at QB.

Agree with Snags about Willis he couldn't complete a phone call.

I liked what I saw in Gatewood, the potential is definitely there (if our coaches don't fuck him up) I just think he is green, really green.

Just pray to God that Stidham doesn't get hurt otherwise......

If he had gone through spring where NO RUNNING was allowed and all he did was try to pass, you would have puked!
Hell Cam did not look very good in spring just trying to pass!

I would say that this is exactly how it was for 99.9 % of the fan base.
There were very few of us knowledgeable enough about football to be able to forecast that he’d be as good as he was.
Granted, even I was unsure of the Heisman outcome. I thought there may be some pushback if the investigation story broke.
