Title: The Garman Cigar Thread
Post by: Godfather on February 29, 2012, 03:53:28 PM
Hey Garman...tried a new stick the other day.  Though I would share.

Very Decent Smoke. Since the first... I have had about 4 more.  Medium to full bodied. Very smooth, I would draw a comparison to an Ashton VSG. Good smoke to the end. Avg price about $8.25 per stick.

Overall impression 88

I've tried that before...  I think I smoked one at the last Big Smoke in Vegas.  I've been meaning to try it again sometime.  You've peaked my interest.  Lately, I've been sticking to a more regular lineup.  Anything Padron Maduro...  Torano Exodus 50 Year...  Joya de Nicaragua Fuerte...  Camacho Corojo...  La Gloria Serie N...

A few relatively recent finds for me include...
- A cigar by Nestor Miranda (Miami Cigars) labeled as 1989.  I'd say that it's prolly a medium-to-full bodied as well.  I always get the Oscuro shade.
- Gurkha Master Select Robusto #4...  I picked up 20 on a closeout special and found them to be very good.  I think the reviews tend to be mixed, but I like it.  Unfortunately, I can't find them anywhere now.  Gurkha still makes a Master Select, but it seems that the size, shape and wrapper are different.
- Cubao Maduro No. 5...  I tried one from somewhere and liked it.  Prolly on the fuller side of medium-to-full...  I've gone through 4-5 boxes over the last year.

I love love love Cubao one of my favorite smokes. Probably the closest thing I smoke that compares to a Cuban.

Not a big fan of the Gurkas. I feel like they are too mass produced. I am a full bodied smoker but I want them to be smooth as well and of the Gurkas that I have had they seem to be harsh and by the middle to end taste like shit.

Miranda makes a good smoke and the label looks familiar, I will have to try.

As for the others you mentioned Padron is my go to cigar, I have never had a bad one. They are the epitome of consistent quality and taste. La Gloria I prefer the R, I have tried three N's and wasn't overly impressed.

Lately I have been on an Oliva kick. The series V and Nub Maduros. Also Brickhouse and La Gloria Cubana EE  have been flowing.   I just recently tried the new Air Bender by La Flora Dominicana it was meh, I probably wouldn't waste my time again.

Garman or Tarheel, will there be a chance to try a nice stick at the X BB outing or is it going to be next to impossible?

We'll be having them on the ride.  I guess weather will determine the other.

As Sani mentioned it'll be dependent on the weather; the smoking light will be on on the way down and back to Auburn in my vehicle or Sani's; maybe we can find a place that is cigar friendly but I think the smoke-nazis have sterilized Auburn unfortunately.

GarMan was right about getting one of those at the Big Smoke Las Vegas; it was very a very smooth, mature medium to my palate.

I've been enjoying the Room 101 cigars lately; tried one at the Big Smoke last year and I was pleasantly surprised at the taste and olor, I've been smoking them ever since.  Been getting back into Trinidad and Montecristo lately too.

Now, when have you ever listening to that poor bastard?

I think I will bring a few choice lick-her samplings Saturday. I mean, AUT1 has to have something GOOD to drink and Snags will need something to go with his fine coke product.

As a matter of fact, I was just thinking about what to bring to slip in the game.  Been sipping on Maker's and delicious coke product this week.  Oh, on a side note, I went in my favorite lick-her establishment a few days ago and the owner and a friend of mine had been "testing" out a few of the newer burrbinz they had gotten in.  They seemed happy.

Anywho, we got to talking about different lick-hers and they asked me had I tried Crown Black.  As I've said before, not a big fan of the Crown because being the delicious coke product mixer that I am, I haven't found anything it goes well with.  Straight up, I admit it's smooth but I just don't do much skrate up drinking.  They popped the lid on a bottle of Black and poured me up a glass.  Holy shiot, that stuff is smooth as glass.  Zero bite.  I was happy then too.

Well, I'll bring some just in case.  My Altadis connection sent me a box of H. Upmann Cameroon Churchills for the first TigerX roundball outing.  Unfortunately, most of the gurlz who attended didn't seem interested.  Pot was apparently OK, but cigars were just too icky and yucky for them.  Anyway, I'll bring what's left of that box along with some others...  Yes, I still have the box, reserved for events like this, aging in my humidor.  They tend to be more mild to medium, but they get better as you smoke.

I tend to agree wiff you on teh Gurkhas.  I've had some shitty, bland or mediocre ones in the past, but this one is pretty good.  I'm down to my last 5, and I've resorted to treating them like my OpusX or Cuban stash now...  At least, until I can find another supply of 'em.

La Gloria Wavell Maduro was my staple cigar for years.  In fact, anything by El Credito has been fairly good.  Although, I don't know what's happening since Ernesto turned the company over to General and left to start his own company.  I find the quality slipping, and the prices have been increasing.  Regarding Ernesto, his new cigars aren't bad.  I've smoked a few now.  The very first one was a little under-aged, and I could sense too much ammonia in the filler.  The last several have been pretty good.

Oliva's have been hit or miss to me.  I do like the Serie V, but the others have just been alright.

Regarding La Flor Dominica, I've been a fan of their Ligero and Double Ligeros for years.  The Chisels work well for me.  As for the Air Bender, I thought the exact same thing as you.  It wasn't what I was expecting, and I thought it was a little bland compared to their others.  I also think the Coranado is very good...

Tarheel's been smoking those damn Tatianas lately.  Every time he comes around, it smells like he's making cookies or brownies.  And, he luvs teh grape cigars...

I do seem to recall that you showed up at The Winchester with a box of wine and cream flavored cigars one poker night.  Of course, they'd probably compliment nicely that Colt 45 that Lurking Tiger bought over.

Got another one for you to try if you haven't.

I love the wrappers on these oily and clean, no real veins.  Good smoke all the way through.  Tried one at the request of my Cigar Shop owner.  I was impressed, these have actually been out for awhile probably over a year and a half so nothing new.  Again probably medium bodied wouldn't classify as full though.  They have a maduro, a sumatra and a natural.   I have tried the Maduro and was more impressed with the Sumatra.

Overall Impression - 89

Kristoff Sumatra (Avg Stick Price: $7.45)

I don't recall ever trying a Kristoff Sumatra, but I've had a few of their other lines.  They're actually quite tasty, and they tend to be fuller bodied...  Well, the ones that I've smoked, anyway.  When I was introduced to them, the cigar shop owner told me that it would knock me on my ass.  It was some sort of all Ligero filler-binder-wrapper combo.  It didn't knock me on my ass, but I was impressed.  I'll try the Sumatra sometime.

I don't recall ever having a cigar knock me on my ass.  I think the only time I have had one that even remotely phased me in that manner was an Opus X and honestly I believe it had more to do with me being drunk and inhaling more than I usually do.  Because I have had many an Opus X after and never felt that way.  Including the $30 Lost City, which by the way is one fine cigar. Not worth $30 but it was a damn good smoke.

I think a distinction may have to be made between puffing, sucking, and blowing.

If you pluck around the InterWebz, you'll find some hilarious comments about it making people light-headed and causing them to puke.  I've never had a problem with it, but it does separate the alphas from the betas.

Maybe not the size, but the shape of one def would get VV excited I think. Although being a  veteran of the activity, he has probably moved onto bigger game by now.

Tried a Montecristo Serie C toro this past Sunday night.  Very exceptional architecture and draw but the cigar itself fell just a little flat with taste and olor.  Not a bad smoke but too much on the mild side for my palate.  I like the brand but the Platinum and Cabinet Seleccion are superior; the regular frontmark of the line is a much better mild smoke in my opinion.
