Title: Justified
Post by: wesfau2 on March 17, 2010, 12:55:53 PM
New FX series featuring Timothy Olyphant and based on an Elmore Leonard (executive producer) short story.

Pretty good, but I've had a jones for more Timmy O. since HBO cancelled Deadwood.  US Marshall Raylan Givens (Olyphant) is re-assigned from Miami to Kentucky, his home state, following a shooting on South Beach.

Old girlfriends, ex-wives and bomb/gun happy skin-heads round out the cast of characters.

Fun and crude...all that I expect in an FX series.

It wasn't bad.  Some of the characters were caricatures, though.  I needed a little more exposition on the Boyd relationship.  Killing that guy off in episode one seemed to be a bad move overall. How quickly it escalated from "howdy ray, here's some hooch" to "get your ass out of town or I'm gonna kill you" didn't work well.

The scene on the balcony with the ex didn't ring true.

The pacing was a little slow, too.

It's got potential.  I'll give it another episode or two to see if it's something I care enough about to keep coming back.

Games are moderately fun, though.

Boyd did not die. Tim O. looks like Billy Bob Thornton at times; the way he smiles and his voice.

I think it works better as a mini-series even though Kentucky still owns some one of a kind characters. It has limitations like a three part Walking Tall that's stretched far too thin or the Tom Selleck series where it is set in a small town. Deadwood was great and I guess that is why I'm pulling for anything even mildly connected to work out.

The new season started last night.

I love Patton Oswalt (in general, really) as Constable Bob.  "Pull on me, Raylan!"

The bounty hunting side-job is a lame diversion.  Bring back a badass enemy a la Quarles, please.

The showdown with Boyd and the snake handler should be excellent.

Why did Raylan's dad slash that inmate's windpipe at the end?

The inmate knew the bagman.

The inmate knew the bagman.

A simple lie detector test to prove he was lying would have been much easier...and cleaner.

It is a fucking crime that Walton Goggins isn't a bigger star.

His scene with the preacher was so strong.  You knew he was going to out-scripture the snake-handler.

Glad to see Wynne Duffy back on the scene.  He was overshadowed by Quarles' bat-shit craziness and has some potential as an entertaining foil to Raylan.

The kids want their fucking gov't check.  I'm already a bit tired of the Waldo Truth/bag story.  It needs to move forward in some significant way...soon.

Filo Beddo for Constable Bob was a shitty trade.

Agreed on Walter Goggins.  Dude has been great in every role I've seen him play.  I also believed Jeremy Davies plays a strong role as Dickie Bennett, and I'm missing him already.

Tuesday nights have become my "go to" night for TV. I'll normally flip channels for a while at night, checking out sports for the most part.  I have a few shows I like to watch but don't care either way if I miss them.  Deadliest Catch is another must watch each season.  But Tuesday, from 8:00-10:00.  Ultimate Fighter and Justified.  Err'body know they better stay out of man-cave unless they want to take a seat and shut the truck up.

Another great episode last night.  Don't know who was playing "Jody", the black guy playing the badass...but he kicked ass. Drugged up as hell and didn't give a frick until Raylan blew his ass away.  I'm addicted to this series now.

A common theme with this show, and it's my only complaint. I really like most of the "bad guys", but they kill em off too fast. The black guy, the fighter. Both had potential. Both are finished with. The crime boss from last season, I loved that guy. Dickie Bennett. All great characters.

Great point.  Both the fighter and black dude were great characters and they snuffed em' out quick.  I didn't see last season (Just got hooked this season after seeing the recommendations) so I don't remember the crime boss.  Jody, the black badass, played the hyped up on crack, invincible role to a tee.  You being in law enforcement, you can speak to it better than I, but that's the way I picture it.  Many years ago, we had a hostage situation close to here in Enterprise at a Beall's Department Store.  A guy went in and held several women at gun point and I think wound up killing two.  (Saw the police video of one of a girl getting killed and the guy getting blown away) During the course of the standoff, he raped a couple of them multiple times.  Tried to use one girl as a shield as he made his way to his car and that's when they blew him....and unfortunately the girl...away.

I say that because I talked to the SWAT team leader who said this guy was soooo hyped on crack, they had to shoot him a dozen or so times because he would not stay down.  And all accounts from inside the store were that he was just wired and crazy.  Like Jody in this episode.  Wired for sound and ready to jump out a second story window or face off with anybody.

So....my question about last week's episode:

When Limehouse changed the deal on Boyd, why did Boyd cave so quickly?  He's never backed down before, and the mere presence of Limehouse's goons can't shake him that badly.  He should have agreed to the 300K/per, but insisted that Limehouse hold Ella May for a week.  Turn Drew into Theo Tonin, collect $500K, return for Ella May and still walk with change in his pocket.

I guess that wouldn't make for as much drama, but it makes more sense for the characters.

Was surprised at that too.  I was waiting for him to turn the tables but he caved right away.  Got a feeling he has something in store for us tonight.

If you know the history with Limehouse, NOBODY messes with Limehouse. And Boyd knows that.

Boy know he would not have left that side of the tracks if he had pushed the limit.

Ultimately Limehouse is a business man.  He would see the value in getting an extra $300K for holding on to the hooker for a week.

I kept waiting for Limehouse to break out into this at any time:

Damn fine show last night.  The exchange between Boyd and (forgot bad bald dude's name) over God telling Abraham to kill his son was intense.  Boyd got his face bashed in a few times but I thought he recovered well in the next few hours.  Good elastic skin the way it bounced back without a mark on him by show's end.

How many dicks did you suck to get to the top?

I was on the fence with the first two.  Maybe I was missing Boyd and the witty exchanges.  I will say though, it's really picked up since then.  I don't like it as much as the first go round but I really hate the criminal in this series.  I don't remember hating any in the first series.
