Title: Disney vs. DeSantis
Post by: Snaggletiger on April 27, 2022, 05:26:08 PM
Have any of you been following the Disney controversy the past few weeks?  In my mind, it points out so much of what’s wrong in our political and social environment today.  First off, Governor Ron DeSantis signed into law, the Parental Rights bill. The law bans classroom instruction on sexual orientation or gender identity in Kindergarten through 3rd grade. Of course, the media completely misconstrued it and labeled it the “Don’t Say Gay Bill”.  For what reason would anybody do that?  The bigger question is, why would anyone want to teach a first grader about sexual orientation?  I’m a live and let live kind of guy, and you’re free to be whomever, or whatever you want.  Go for it.  But why is it even remotely necessary to have that in our schools, especially for children anywhere from 5 to 8 years old?

One of the biggest critics of the Bill has been Disney.  I honestly don’t understand why an entity like Disney would be getting involved in politics, much less promoting this type of subject being taught to young children.  From a business standpoint, why would you alienate such a huge segment of your potential customers by getting involved in that fight? It makes zero sense.

So then, Governor DeSantis goes ahead with revoking Disney’s special tax status.  I don’t pretend to know what that means.  I have read that Disney had a special status that essentially allowed it to govern itself for lack of a better term.  Maybe some of you can better explain.  While I don’t have an opinion either way on Disney getting special treatment, I do have a problem with DeSantis making that move.  I’ve generally liked DeSantis and his no-nonsense, common sense approach, but this is straight up political retaliation for Disney taking the stance they did.

I don’t agree with Disney on any part of this, and as I said, I can’t understand why they would take that position.  I can make my own decision whether to support them, or not, just like any other business. But, DeSantis said because we don’t agree, I’m going to use my political pull to punish you. Not a good look, in my opinion. What say you?

I pay FL property taxes. I’m good with it.
It’s time businesses stay out of politics or stop reaping the rewards.
And it’s not just about the bill. Disney management is nothing more than corporate groomers. Listen to the tapes.
