Title: Not so good news
Post by: djsimp on March 11, 2011, 01:54:19 PM
Apparently, last night four of our AU football players were arrested for what is being called a home invasion with possibly a 5th guy that is from the basketball team. I read on another site that the Lee County Sheriff will have a news conference at 4pm CST.

http://therealistnation.blogspot.com/

At first, I thought maybe this was some bullshit news but it seems to be beyond a secret at this point.

I'm having a hard time believing that all four (5?) of these guys are stupid enough to do this. If they did, well, like Jumbo said...bye.

I wonder if they were all at someones house chillin' and somebody got pissed. Then next thing you know the tenant called the Po Po.

If this is in fact true, I hope none of these guys had or pulled a gun. If so, this shit could get real bad for them. Other than that, this may be blown out of proportion. I just think the guy who actually lives at the house got pissed off at one of the above mentioned and realized real quick that he was way outnumbered.

I've altered the wording in a few places...  this is NOT an exact copy from Scout's premium boards...

Per Scout.com...   It's no rumor....

Antonio Goodwin, Shaun Kitchens, Mike McNeil and Dakota Mosley are in the Lee County Jail charged with five counts each of first degree robbery, one count each of burglary and one count each of theft of property in the third degree . Each is being held on $511,000 bond.

McNeil, who is from Davidson High School in Mobile, started this past season as a junior safety. He sat out the entire 2009 season with an injury.

Kitchens played as a reserve receiver and saw action on special teams this past fall as a true freshman. He is from Banneker High School in College Park, Ga.

Antonio Goodwin is a true freshman from Washington High in Atlanta. He saw action on special teams and played briefly as a wide receiver.

Dakota Mosley, a freshman tight end from Little Rock Christian Academy in Little Rock, Ark., was redshirted and did not play for the Tigers last season.

Unfuckingbelieveable.  I'm sure there's the whole innocent before proven guilty, but this sounds pretty open shut to have bond of 500K each.  Jeebus....

Well, there's several open spots on the roster for next season...  Fuck.

Then doesn't that make bail 10x that amount?  Me thinks that rivals does know the difference.  The bond is typically 10% of what bail is set at.  Correct?

Still a lot no matter.

I suspect we were just making room on the roster.  This is a more clean way to deal with the problem in lieu of "medical hardships".

Folks think the terms are inter-changeable.

Anyway. They might want to get comfortable. $5110 is hard to come by.

Either way, some DIV 2 school is about to get a nice upgrade..............in a few years.

Police: 4 AU players arrested in connection with robbery

By: David Morrison
March 11, 2011 1:30 PM

Here's the Auburn Police Department statement. More on this as it becomes available:

On Friday, March 11, 2011, the Auburn Police Division arrested four people and charged each of them with five counts of Robbery 1st Degree, one count of Burglary 1st Degree, and one count of Theft of Property 3rd Degree.  They are identified as Antonio M. Goodwin, age 20, Kowaski Q. Kitchens, age 19, Michael A. McNeil, age 22, and Harrison D. Mosley, age 19.  All list an Auburn address.  At approximately 12:25 a.m. this same date officers responded to a residence located in the 2300 block of Lee Road 137 (Wire Road) in reference to the report of a robbery that had just occurred.  According to the five victims present, three black males entered the residence with one displaying a handgun.  Personal property was stolen during the incident.  No injuries were reported.  A patrolman responding to the area observed what he believed to be the suspect vehicle based on a description he was given.  Officers stopped the vehicle in the 1200 block of Wire Road and four suspects were taken into custody.  A pistol and the stolen property was recovered at the scene.  Goodwin, Kitchens, McNeil, and Mosley were transported to the Lee County Detention Center where each is currently being held on a $511,000 bond.

Here's head coach Gene Chizik's statement:

"The players arrested in connection with this deeply troubling incident have been permanently dismissed from our football team.  While we realize the legal process will run its course and these young men have a right for their case to be heard, playing for Auburn University is an honor and a privilege. It is not a right."

“We hold our student-athletes to a high standard of conduct on and off the field as representatives of Auburn University, and this kind of behavior is not tolerated."

“I am extremely disappointed and embarrassed by the actions of these individuals. I want to personally apologize to all of those who were impacted by this senseless act, including the victims, Auburn University and the Auburn family.”

And a statement from athletic director Jay Jacobs:

“This type of behavior will not be tolerated at Auburn. I fully support Coach Chizik’s swift and decisive action to dismiss these four student-athletes from our football team effective immediately.”

Either way, some DIV 2 school is about to get a nice upgrade..............in a few years.

Sports By Brooks is reporting that Mark Richt was seen at the Lee County Judicial Center and had offered all four players scholarships to uga.

Richt was quoted as saying: "This is the type of go-getters we like at uga.  All four can enroll, go through spring training & start immediately next year."

Don't get me wrong, there is NOTHING HERE to be proud of....

However...

The rest of college football could take a lesson in this decisive and quick action.  This was swift and excellent move.  Kudos for Chizik in making it very clear that AU Football has no use for this type of character.

Seriously though, this is BAAAAAAADDDDD stuff. Armed robbery is the worst. And they just randomly picked a house to rob? When the final story comes out, somebody got their feeling hurt and decided to retaliate. Well, joke backfired, it seems.

I mean, what is the motivation for doing this?  You're college football players.  Every one of them had a chance to make it to the NFL.  Everyone one of the had the chance to get a degree from a great university and build their lives without the need for violence and theft.

These young men have made a terrible mistake. Safe to say it's probably not their first, but we can all hope it's their last or that this at least redirects their paths in life to a better ending.

Okay, I'm all for the swift kick to the curb by Chizik and maybe in quickly scanning through 5 pages, I missed the answer to my question. How did he come so quickly to such a decisive action as permanently dismissing them?  Hey, if they did it...best of luck with your new cell mates.  But did I miss where Chizik had already talked to them?

I'm assuming he had access to some concrete info pretty much establishing their guilt, but how did he get that in the few hours since their arrest?  Not questioning The Chin and I certainly have nothing to dispute his decision.  Just more curious as to how he knew to wash his hands of them without anything more to go on than they were arrested.  Again, I've scanned numerous pages in the last 3 minutes so I may have missed it.

I think there are certain types of offenses that just the accusation alone is enough to warrant separation.

Armed robbery is one of those. This is not your normal get drunk, slapahoe offense. I don't think the victims' daddies will be coming out saying they deserved to get robbed.

I do think in the end, we'll find out that this was personal for one of the guys. I just don't buy that they would randomly rob someone without at least one of the four saying, "Whoa. This is insane".

Coaches dont have to be shown evidence to a legal standard beyond a reasonable doubt.  If whats reported is accurate, thats more than enough.

Experience telss me either collecting a "debt" or someone had knowledge of a homie having a big shipment ciming in, or having just hit a big windfall.  Wasnt no random target.

I would think it was like a morals clause in a coach's contract.  Even having his or her name associated with something detrimental to the image of the University is enough to get a coach fired, guilty or not.  Seems to me that Chiz has told the players on more than one occasion that they will either represent Auburn University in a positive light or they will not be representing Auburn University at all.

So yeah, i bet you that even if it turns out Dakota was just giving his buddies a ride, he is as gone as they are.  To paraphrase one of our newest members, you are Known by The Company You Keep.

It's like I was telling my friend from out of town this morning, after I heard the news. It is so tough living around Auburn fans not knowing when a gun will be pulled on me with the hope of stealing my stuff.

I try to tell people this isn't how the state is, but he just shakes his head and says yes it is.

I am ashamed to be from this state sometimes with how you represent Alabama as a whole.

I know kids do stupid shit, get drunk and act stupid, etc. I don't really see a problem with that sort of arrest as long as it isn't a pattern. But damn, armed robbery is a step outside the box. Can't imagine what those guys were thinking. I hope they're stocking up on some soap-on-a-rope, though. I don't see this shit ending up with some sort of probation.

No, they weren't arrested in Tuscaloosa.  So they won't have the opportunity to be given ice cream or hailed as "fine young men."

They'll be held accountable for what they did.

It's disappointing.  It casts a negative light (unfairly) on the whole team.  Proves that no matter what you do, you can't control the stupid decisions some people will make.

All you can do is what AU did.  Immediate and appropriate response.   It's not what we've seen from Florida, it's not what we've seen from other schools (you know who they are).  Disgusted at the stupidity of the players,  agree with the stern reaction.

I agree, this shit was far beyond just stupid. Kaos said it right too, it was best for Auburn and everyone else for Chizik to take immediate action. These guys were good players, but thats not what sucks. Well, for the Auburns fans it is, both because the loss of talent and it cast a dark shadow. What really sucks is these guys have possibly fucked their lives up for a long long time. Nevermind they screwed themselves the possible NFL careers, the college experience and who knows what else. They have screwed themselves out of freedom and also a road out of destitution. Fucking idiots.

I wonder what Coach Chizik said to them.

Agree. Chiz and Jacobs were not playing around. You cannot let this kind of culture breed in the locker room even if it means it MAY cost you a game or so down the road. Who cares. Letting this behavior go will cost you much greater in the long term. Kudos to both of them for the swift action.

Actually, the first team that comes to mind even more than Florida is Ugger. And look at the culture of their program. Its the norm. Chiz is simply cutting the head off this issue before it can get like that. I think we would all like to believe this is the exception, not the rule. Their immediate dismissal helps to cement this.

Goodwin and Kitchens I am not as surprised by. Dudes are both from rough parts of Atlanta. Booker T and College Park are areas where this is the norm. Where rappers pop up on every corner and many make it big. Listen to the lyrics of their songs and visit these areas and you can easily see how these kids get desensitized to this type of behavior at an early age. Sad really.

And yet all you'll hear on the airwaves and message boards is how Chizik's program is out of control, and how "he had to do what he did" therefore you can't give him credit for doing his job.  Which there is no "credit" to be given for doing what has to be done, but it's damn sure not something to spin in to a negative...unless you're a fucking bammer.

Richt, Meyer or Saban would have suspended them for one half against UT-Chattanooga. Chiz did the right thing and I don't give a flying fuck how they spin. He didn't HAVE to kick them off the team. He could have stood by his man like Marky Mark in Athens. But Gene did the RIGHT thing. I like it.
