Title: Poor Jarhead...

And the hits just keep on comin...  I know no one counted on him anymore, but it is the end of an era nonetheless...

JUPITER, Fla. – St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Jim Edmonds has announced his retirement at age 40.

Edmonds injured his right Achilles' tendon while rounding the bases after a home run last September for Cincinnati and never played again.

Edmonds signed a minor league contract with the Cardinals this month and was still undergoing treatment. But team doctors told Edmonds the injury was so severe he would not be medically cleared to play, and that he could hurt himself even more,

The popular center fielder was a four-time All-Star and eight-time Gold Glove winner in 17 seasons. He helped the Cardinals win the 2006 World Series.

Edmonds said Friday that he felt it was best to retire now.

Yeah, Wednesday and Thursday last week were pretty much the worst sports day I've had in a long long time.

Not shocked about Jimmy though.  Glad he could retire a Redbird.

And Puma is happy, since he'll get more playtime time, too.

Adam Wainwright...significant elbow injury.

Quote
JUPITER, Fla. -- St. Louis Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright injured his elbow Monday and is returning to St. Louis to have it examined by team doctors.

General manager John Mozeliak said Wednesday that "things do not look encouraging" for the 2010 Cy Young Award runner-up, based on the initial evaluation by the training staff, and believed it is a "significant injury."

He said the right-hander injured his elbow in Monday's bullpen session.

2010 STATS

    * GM33
    * W20
    * L11
    * BB56
    * K213
    * ERA2.42

"There's a problem with the ligament," Mozeliak said, according to the New York Daily News. "But it doesn't look good."

An update is expected Wednesday afternoon.

Wainwright went 20-11 with a 2.42 ERA in 2010, finishing second in the Cy Young Award balloting to Philadelphia's Roy Halladay.

He won his 19th and 20th games while nursing a strain in his right forearm, which was hurt in a freak accident at home. He was shut down for the rest of the season, based on the recommendation of the team doctor.

An MRI exam in late September showed a strained muscle in his forearm and inflammation near the elbow. At the time, the Cardinals believed Wainwright would be fine with rest, and the pitcher said the elbow ligament was not an issue.

Wainwright said he had slept on the arm earlier in September, woke up, found the arm numb and flung it aside instead of waiting for feeling to return.

In 2009, Wainwright led the NL in wins (19), innings (233) and starts (34), winning a Gold Glove while finishing third in the Cy Young Award voting.

BWWWWWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

Seriously though, I hate to hear that about Wainright.  I would have hated it even more had it happened last season, since he was the ace of my fantasy team's otherwise piss poor pitching staff.

I figured that would give you a laugh.

With him going down, and Pujols' free agency, the Kansas City Royalization of the Cardinals is starting to take place.

Wainwright set for Tommy John surgery

JUPITER, Fla. -- St. Louis Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright will require Tommy John surgery to repair his elbow and he will miss the entire 2011 season, the club confirmed this morning.

General manager John Mozeliak made the announcement at about 10 a.m. St. Louis time after a discussion with the pitcher and the team physician. All parties had been waiting on the results of a second opinion requested Wednesday evening from Dr. Lewis Yocum in the Los Angeles area.

"We have confirmed that Adam Wainwright will require Tommy John surgery. So obviously, he'll be out for the year," Mozeliak said. "Not a real surprise to us, but certainly a disappointment and a finality to this process. As we look to the future now we certainly beleive that we have a strong starting rotation on this club. And now we're going to have to try and fill it in terms of a fifth spot."

The surgery date has not been set, but Wainwright will have the procedure done in St. Louis by Cardinals physician George Paletta.

Mozeliak said that the recovery is usually 12 to 15 months.

I'm not sure what the fuck he's smoking when he said that, but I will need some of it to calm me down.

Carps good, but he's not the 2006 version anymore.  If he wins 15 games this year, I'd be shocked.

I'm updating my NL-Central predictions
1) Cubs
2) Reds
3) Cards
4) Brewers
5) Houston
6) Pirates

Carpenter, Boggs Injured

An already trying spring for the Cardinals took another distressing turn on Tuesday when former two pitchers were removed from the team's Grapefruit League game against the Marlins due to injuries.

Former Cy Young winner Chris Carpenter was pulled in the third inning due to a strained left hamstring, while reliever Mitchell Boggs came out an inning later with a lower back strain.

Carpenter had breezed through 2 2/3 innings with scarcely a hiccup before he walked Marlins outfielder Chris Coghlan. After the final pitch of Coghlan's plate appearance, Carpenter walked off the mound and head athletic trainer Greg Hauck came out to check on him. With virtually no delay, Carpenter headed for the dugout.

Boggs came in to replace Carpenter and received an extended warm-up time because of the injury. Boggs struck out Donnie Murphy to end the inning. Carpenter was tended to in the dugout for the remainder of the inning, then left for the Cardinals' clubhouse with Hauck.

With one out in the fourth and an 0-2 count to John Buck, Boggs pulled up in distress, reaching for his lower back. He was also removed without throwing another pitch, replaced by left-hander Brian Tallet.

Already this spring, the Cardinals have lost co-ace Adam Wainwright to season-ending elbow injury and infielder Nick Punto for 2-3 months due to a sports hernia. Drew Baur, one of the central members of the team's ownership group, passed away on Feb. 20.

Cubs scuffle in dugout after 6-run first
March 2, 2011 2:33 PM | 1 Comment

By Paul Sullivan

MARYVALE, Ariz.- A dugout scuffle occurred Wednesday after the Cubs gave up six first inning runs in an exhibition game vs. Milwaukee.

The fight was quickly broken up by players and coaches, and order was restored. Carlos Silva appeared to be involved, but that hasn't been confirmed. Silva watched the Cubs commtt three errors, and served up two home runs in the six-run first.

Silva was out of the inning with a double play grounder, trailing 4-0, but a catchers interference call on Koyie Hill prolonged it, and have gave up two more runs. Silva was angry coming into the dugout, and apparently some words were exchanged with someone else in the dugout. Players scrambled to break it up, and Silva was removed from the game the next inning.

He was walked to the clubhouse by strength coach Tim Buss after the top half of the third.

Jason Castro has surgery for torn ACL

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Houston Astros catcher Jason Castro will be sidelined for most or all of the season following surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

Castro, who earned the Astros' regular catching job as a 22-year-old rookie last season, was injured Wednesday while trying to avoid a tag by Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera in Lakeland. It was Castro's second game of spring training.

The original diagnosis was a sprain, but an MRI revealed a tear in Castro's right meniscus. The torn ACL was discovered late Thursday and he was operated on Friday. The typical recovery time is six months.

"He might be able to come back at some point in September, but he's such a valuable person, such a valuable player, you don't want to rush a guy like that," manager Brad Mills said. "Let him take his time. Let him get stronger. He's going to be fine. As I told Jason, he was going to have a great year this year. Now, he's going to have a great year next year."

Houston was left with five catchers in camp, but only Humberto Quintero and J.R. Towles are on the 40-man roster.

"We've talked about all kinds of things," Mills said, "but right now we've got these five guys in camp and they're going to work and everything is going to be considered."

Al that means to me is that instead of three players on the roster that I recognize by name, there are now two.

Sucks for JC but considering my expectations for this season are exactly nil, meh.
