Well...can we add a College World Series Trophy to the mantle?

AU team looks to repeat as SEC West Champs...

Quote
AUBURN, Ala. - Coming off one of the most successful seasons on record, which included hosting a NCAA Regional and winning a division title, Auburn has been picked to repeat as the Southeastern Conference's Western Division Champion in the Rivals.com 2011 SEC Preview.

According to lead college baseball writer Kendall Rogers, Auburn, which went 43-21, 20-10 SEC last year, joins LSU as the headliners in the SEC West and the two are included in his five safe bets for playing in the postseason this year, along with SEC East teams Florida, Vanderbilt and South Carolina.

Senior Tony Caldwell is the catcher on the all-conference team after hitting .349 with eight doubles, 10 home runs and 41 RBI while splitting time between the outfield and behind the plate last year.

Auburn begins its season on Friday, Feb. 18 when it plays host to Arkansas State at 6pm as part of an opening weekend tournament at Plainsman Park.

Spring practice begins on Friday, Jan. 28.

T.V. appearances...

Quote
AUBURN, Ala. - The Auburn baseball team has had its game at South Carolina on Sunday, May 1 added to the ESPN television schedule, the network and the Southeastern Conference office announced on Thursday. Already scheduled to be a part of the ESPNU's Thursday Night SEC Baseball Game of the Week when it plays host to Ole Miss, the game at South Carolina is the only one of the 18 televised league games by the ESPN family of networks to appear on the flagship station. The game time has also been changed to a 3pm ET start.

ESPNU's previously announced inaugural Thursday Night SEC Baseball Game of the Week will begin Thursday, Apr. 7 and run seven weeks through May 19. In addition to the Thursday night games, SEC baseball will have 11 other games, including the SEC Championship on Sunday, May 29 on ESPN2.

Auburn could possibly pick up a third ESPN game as the network has put a SEC Wildcard in place for Friday, May 13 on ESPNU, which coincided with Auburn's home series against Alabama.

Schedule comments...

Quote
The defending Southeastern Conference Western Division champion Auburn baseball team will play 26 games against teams that made the 2010 NCAA Tournament as the team released the 2011 schedule on Thursday. Auburn will play a total of 33 games at home, beginning with the season-opener against Arkansas State on Friday, Feb. 18 at 6pm.

The opener is a part of the Auburn Tournament, which in its second season will also include Virginia from the Atlantic Coast Conference and UAB from Conference USA, which were both top-five conferences in 2010 according to WarrenNolan.com.

Auburn will also play in a pre-conference tournament at the College of Charleston the weekend of March 4-6 before playing host to College World Series participant Arizona State from March 11-13 at Plainsman Park.

"The 2011 schedule presents a great challenge to this young team as we prepare for another quest to make the SEC Tournament and post-season play," Auburn Head Coach John Pawlowski said. "We host a tough preseason tournament and we have a return trip from Arizona State which should pose big challenges for the 17 new faces on our team as we head into the rigors of the SEC schedule."

The SEC slate begins on March 18 with Arkansas visiting Plainsman Park. Of the five SEC teams that heads to Auburn this season, four of them played in last season's NCAA Tournament in Arkansas, Vanderbilt (April 1-3), Ole Miss (April 22-24) and Alabama (May 13-15). The other conference foe to head to the Plains is Georgia (May 6-8).

Auburn will play at Mississippi State (March 25-27), at Kentucky (April 8-10), at LSU (April 15-17), at defending National Champion South Carolina (April 29-May 1) and at Tennessee (May 19-21) in conference play.

Midweek home-and-homes are scheduled with Jacksonville State (Feb. 22 and Mar. 22), Troy (Mar. 29 and Apr. 5), South Alabama (Apr. 20 and May 17) and Samford (Apr. 26 and May 10), with the first game of each series being played at Plainsman Park and the second on the road.

The third annual Capital City Classic takes place on Tuesday, March 15 at Montgomery's Riverwalk Stadium. Auburn has defeated Alabama in each of the first two Classics.

The 2011 SEC Tournament returns to Hoover May 25-29 and NCAA Regionals begin on June 2.

A 9-4 win over Jacksonville State puts the real Tigahs at 3-1.  Radford comes in for 3 this weekend.  They currently sit at 2-1 with two wins over Army and a loss in their last game to Davidson.  Have no idea what that means but hopefully, the assumption that Auburn is the better program will turn out to be true.  It looks that way with the next 5 games AU plays.  It'd be nice to get on a roll before Memphis and Arizona State.

Tiggers now 4-2 on the season.

Okay....yesterday, the Planesmens went on the road for the first time to Charleston S.C. for a tournament.  In game one...the Tiggahs beat New York.  No not the Yankees or Mets.  New York Tech. Anyway...they come back today to face the host team..#18 College of Charleston.  WIN!!!  Tonight, they go right back at it with Western Kentucky.  No updates yet but this could be pretty big...going on the road to a tournament with a top 20 team on their home field and going undefeated.

War Damn Auburn Baseball

One thing that stands out so far is through 11 games, this team is giving up 4 runs per game.  In two games they gave up 13 and 8.  That means that in 9 games so far they have given up less than 3 runs per game.  Pretty good stuff.  Get the bats on fire and this could be a dangerous team.

I don't guess anyone updated, but we went 1-2 against ASU this past weekend.  Apparently, I didn't get to watch, but was getting updates, we had them beat in the first game and let them come back and beat us 8-7.  They won the second game 9-5 and then we won the final game of the series 10-8.

We play the turds today at 7 central on CSS in Montgomery, and then this weekend we have Ark at home.  I will be interested to see what we do in those games.

Took me a second on the "game vaginas".  This is the 3rd series....or at least game(s) against top 10 teams.  Virginia came in for one (And beat AU like a rented mule), then we they had a very closely contested series with #7 ASU.  Now they take a series from #9 Arky.  So 3-4 record against top 10 opponents.  Not great but I love that every game except 1 has been a battle and AU now knows what it takes to play at that level.

Well, our beloved Tigers....fresh off an 8-0 to Samford, travel to face #2 South Carolina.  Looks like they have a great shot tonight with the SC pitcher being 9-1 with a 1.26 ERA.  Should be able to slap him around pretty good.

Yeah...I can see that.

Good and bad update.  The Tigers take the series from the Bullpuppies and could/should have swept the series. I think they jumped out to an 8-0 lead and eventually lost after giving up 9 runs in the 9th.  Cannot figure this team out.  They'll take series wins over some of the best and lose to Bethune-Cookman and Samford.

In OOC play this year, Auburn's losses include:

Radford
Bethune Cookman
Jacksonville State
South Alabama
Troy
Samford X2

I know these guys lost a ton of key players from last years team but there's also a good core of returning starters.  They prove at times that they can play with the best but then look awful against teams they should handle.  I do believe they have a pretty good recruiting class coming in for 2012 if they don't sign with the bigs.

Make it South Alabama x 2.  Jaguars romp 8-1.  Had to listen to the horrible announcer on WNSP.

The announcer for USA kept harping on the fact that the Jags didn't need the game, didn't care about the game, it was just an exercise for them.  But Auburn, on the other hand, desperately needed a win because to make the NCAA you have to be above .500.

Here's the situation.  Auburn is 28-25 now.   As the USA talking goon noted, the SEC Tournament (unless you win it) is two losses.   Fuck up and lose two of three to Tennessee and go two and out in the SEC Tourney?  You're staring at 29-29.   No tournament bid.

If that doomsday scenario plays out, you can blame it on the ridiculously bad out of conference losses.

For Moses' sake, AU is an SEC team with some of the best facilities in the nation.  They should be able to stick the reserve right fielder on the mound and get past Samford, Radford, Bethune or Jax State.

In the nightmare scenario, those are the teams that could deny AU a tournament invite.

Tennessee takes two of three.

Part one of nightmare scenario now complete.

Two and out in the SEC tourney?  No NCAA bid.

Glad Evan "What? Something Negative is Happening at Auburn! Let me write it up" Woodberry crawled out of his hole to document it.
