I aint gonna lie....if they were on another carrier besides AT&T (namely Verizon) I would probably have one. Rumors abound that there will be a Verizon iPhone this year but that would require Verizon getting over some of the CDMA hurdles that would be a problem on the iPhone. We shall see.

Just got off the phone with AT&T. I am eligible for an upgrade. Going to the AT&T store a week from today to preorder.

I will probably only have it about a week before I get ballsy enough to jailbreak it.

Dat's what I'm getting...when Sprint will let me fucking upgrade.

Wait til 8/1/10...and the phone is $99.  Buy it now...it's $499.

Keep up that good fight.

The increased battery life is a huge advantage over Droid, that was already behind in that capacity. I'm pumped about these new specs.

There is reasonable debate between a Droid and an iPhone on their face, but a jailbroken iPhone vs. a Droid? No contest. Especially not with these updates.

I guess I just don't feel jipped at all.  A good group of my friends LOVE their iPhones, and it's fine.  I just don't need all the games and apps that are more one time convenience related rather than necessity apps (and the droid still has plenty of those).

I think the good thing also, is that it's more than evident that developers and larger companies are recognizing the slightly more than substantial number of droids coming into the market, and you're seeing more and more iphone AND droid apps launced in tandom.

Not a fight to be kept up.  Some are GOING to love their iphones, and some just don't find them to be ALL that.  No biggie.

Asshole.

I woke up at 6:45. Tried Apple's site for about an hour. Then ended up trying Apple's and AT&T's simultaneously. Couldn't get either to work.

The apple page is blocked at my work. I brought my personal laptop, and a guy in my office is supposed to be bringing his Verizon personal WiFi router. We shall see.

For some reason, the white phone isn't available for preorder. I'd rather have the black one anyway.

Google "Porn" on an iPhone, and you get plenty of quality free sites.

Pornhub.com comes to mind...

Anyway, I got my iPhone reserved, but I'm gonna have to pick it up at the Apple store on the 24th...

I had to do it at the Apple Store's intranet, and you can only do that for pickup. Oh well.

Quote
iPhone 4 Order Security Breach Exposes Personal Information

Apple's iPhone 4 pre-ordering has been a total disaster, but it gets much worse: An AT&T insider claims that this iPhonecalypse may be related to "a major fraud update that went wrong." The bug is exposing AT&T users' private information.

So far there have been at least three accounted cases of mistaken identities sent by Gizmodo.com readers—numerous readers are sending their cases in. See below.

This is how it happens: A customer tries to log into their AT&T account to order a new iPhone 4 upgrade. Despite entering their username and password, the AT&T system would take them to another user account. This gives access to all kinds of private information about the mistaken customer: Addresses, phone calls, and bills, along with the rest of private information, becomes exposed to random (in a note sent to Gizmodo, AT&T claims that they " have been unable to replicate the issue, but the information displayed did not include call-detail records, social security numbers, or credit card information.")

Be glad you got yours.

They sold out...over 600,000 pre-orders yesterday.

10 x more ordered on the first day than the 3GS

The had 13 x more activity on their website then with the 3GS

Stopped pre-orders all together until they can get caught up with production.

I love my apple stock up nearly $7 today.  :)

Both features were previously available in jailbroken iPhones. Glad Apple is taking a queue from the l33t haxors.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to jailbreak again, almost immediately. I've read that it's already been done.

Everyone I've spoken to has had no problems updating to IOS4.

Last night, I backed up my phone the regular way. Then I tried installing IOS4, and it makes me back up again. You can't skip the backup, either. I stared at that green bar not move a pixel for 3 hours. I finally went to bed with it running.

I woke up the next day and not shit had happened.

3G. IOS4 installs on 3G & 3GS, just not the first generation iPhone.

I ran another manual backup, and restored my device again. This time it let me install IOS4.

Problem is, now I have none of my metadata (most importantly my contacts) in my phone.

I'm restoring from backup, but now I am having the same exact problem trying to restore!!!

I will not be doing that for iPhone 5. Live & learn.

I assumed that since I had reserved it that that actually fucking meant something.

There were two lines, one for reserves and one for people who just showed up.

Granted, the people in the "just showed up" line that was getting in the same time as me had been there since 5:30 am, which was about 10 1/2 hours. But by the end there, it was one from one line, one from the other.

I had the iPhone 3G for 2 years without ever cracking the screen.

I have had the iPhone 4 made of the new "unbreakable glass", and have shattered the back completely in day five of ownership.

I had it in my elastic waistband of my gym shorts, when I went out to pick up the trash cans from the street. It slipped out and landed in the driveway, and the back screen was shattered.

I'd buy a case for this, for sure. I just did. My only saving grace, I guess, is that it shattered the back panel and not the front screen.

This whole ordeal sounds like waaaaay more trouble than the damned phone is worth.

Aww come on I know I could talk you into the dutch rudder.

FYI Chad the back is not made of the same glass as the front.  Front is something called Gorilla Glass, the back is unidentified.

"Unidentified"? What the fuck is that, unobtanium?

Why not make the fucking back of the phone out of the same shit as the front, unles you purposely want people to bust the shit up? Or, I don't know, rubber, or plastic, or metal, or ANY FUCKING MATERIAL BESIDES THE MOST BREAKABLE ONE ON THE PLANET, PLAIN OLD GLASS.

I'm pretty livid about it.

I would have gotten a case when I got the phone, but they were sold out of the bumpers and the people at the store were pimping this "gorilla glass", saying it wouldn't be a big deal to wait  little while.

Of course apple is selling these bumpers, which are nothing more than fucking rubber bands for $40.

On top of that, I'm pissed because I still can't jailbreak it. It's just plain broken.

I think I just jumped off the bandwagon. I'm probably getting a droid phone next. But now I have to wait 2 fucking years with this busted up piece of shit before I can switch to a network that actually fucking allows you to send and receive phone calls because it's not overcrowded as shit all because....Apple won't expand to other networks like T-Mobile, Sprint, or Verizon.

Fuck em in da mouf.

Got my phone replaced in 10 minutes free of charge, with zero hassle. I walked into the apple store to see if anything could be done about it, fully expecting them to reply "Yeah, you can fuck yourself", but they informed me that apparently Apple is completely cool with people fucking their phones up into oblivion for a certain number of days after a release, and they hand you a new one, no questions asked. Apparently, it's so they can send the defective ones back to "study". Looks like I got lucky for once.

Have any of you guys had problems with your cheek either muting, putting someone on hold, going into FaceTime, or just hanging up on someone?  Like the sensor that detects your face when you are talking on it is faulty. Headed to the apple store later today to see if they can fix this. But if someone tells me I'm holding the phone wrong, I may tell them to give me my money back, and reactivate my 3GS.

That is weird.

Do you by chance have the phone in a case? I had this problem when I bought a case for the phone that wasn't "approved" by apple. There is a censor next to the earpiece that is supposed to tell when it's up against your face, and blacks the screen out. If it's blocked by anything else, it won't know you have the phone on your face.

Apple store was aware of this problem, and have ordered me a new phone, they were out of the 32gb phones. Should have a replacement within a week. I'll let you know if that new one has the same issue, but I'd return yours. No hassle at all.

I don't know why, I've just never been an iPhone fan. I have a Droid Eris, and it runs great. I like the apps on the Android Market. I'm sure the Apple Store has a shitload more apps and everything, but other than the apps and storage (I can always throw a bigger SD card in if I need more than 8GB), I just don't know what the big deal is about the iPhone. I bought a $30 Otter Box for my Eris, and it has held up pretty good. I drop my phone on hard surfaces pretty regularly, so I am pretty happy with the Otter Box. I'm not knocking iPhones or anything, I just don't see what the big deal is. Perhaps I'm just not that well educated on them.

From what I can tell, my phone has pretty much everything the iPhone has, except the iPhone has a much more extensive app market, and iPhone probably has a better processor. As far as the apps department goes, Droid has a shit ton of functional applications available. If you're not looking to have fifty hojillion useless apps on your phone, Droid would be OK. Plus, my phone is on a pretty good network. I don't have to choose between shitty service, or a good phone. I get both.

My girlfriend has the Droid Eris and after using it awhile, I just don't like it as much as the iPhone.

It just comes down to ease of use for me. The whole user experience seems to be better on the iPhone. The whole OS is just more to my liking. My iPhone does everything I want it to without ever freezing up or anything. Syncing my music, movies, and podcasts are a breeze. One of the biggest things for me is that my calenders sync over the air with my computer in real-time so all my stuff is always up to date (a big thing for me).

After having a Palm Treo for a few years and having to use all kinds of workarounds to sync the calender with my laptop, it is really nice to just have it happen automatically. A lot of that is because I also have an apple laptop.

But as I've said before, it all comes down to personal preference and I'm certainly not going to knock somebody for choosing a different phone that serves their needs better.

After 3 iPhone 4s, all with the proximity sensor problem, numerous iOS4 restores, and who knows what else, I've fucking had it with the iPhone 4.  I'm returning it to AT&T today, get my money back, and reactivate my 3GS.

The tech support between AT&T and Apple don't know their assholes from their belly buttons.  Everyone I speak to tells me something different.  The final straw was the lady from AT&T I spoke with this morning who told me I was "holding the phone to close to my face."  When I asked her that if the proximity sensor worked properly, shouldn't that be a non issue?  And she told me that the "iPhone 4 just works better than the 3GS."

Fuck these ass clowns.  If Steve Jobs were in my office right now, I'd fucking donkey punch his ass.

I was some what disappointed that the people at the AT&T store were very helfpul, and issued me a complete refund, waived the restocking fee, and set up my 3GS again.  The only thing they could not do was reverse the contract, which they said the 611 number would be able to help me with.

I was channeling Drill Instructor Sgt Martinez on my way over, since he resides on the 7th Layer of Hell, and he could make anyone do anything.  I'm pretty sure if BP got a hold of him, he'd yell at all the oil in the gulf, and it would return to the well as the speed of fucking light.

So, I basically had an iPhone4 for 3 weeks, and 2 replacements on my original model, and all three had the same problem.  The proximity sensor on it is total shit.

Someone send Rush Limbaugh a link to this thread.

Driving home from Ft. Myers today I was scanning the radio dial and stopped on Rush.  He has a misconception about the public's reaction to the Iphone 4.

See, Rush swears that there are NO customer complaints on the Iphone.  He claims that Schumer is on a witch hunt because Apple is non-union and hasn't fallen in lock-step with this administration's socialist agenda.  He cites Schumer's role in the Toyota (also non-union) recall mess as support.  He ignores the Consumer Reports evaluation of the Iphone and assures us that if customers were unhappy with the product that we'd be hearing from them.

I found it to be hysterical, because every caller that the screener allowed through found this to be quite the revelation.

I do think the issue has been blown out of proportion because of how popular Apple products have gotten. There have been tons of phones with more problems with the iPhone 4 that people aren't looking to tear down every step of the way. That being said, it does look like some iPhone 4's are having problems. I guess I've been lucky because I still haven't had a problem since launch day. No dropped calls, no grip of death, no proximity sensor failures, etc.

Apple has spent the last 20 years telling everyone that they are not like everyone else and in one press conference has now told everyone with their power point presentation that they are like everyone else.

This shit is just funny.

I don't understand why they built the internal antenna into the BOTTOM of the phone. You know, where everybody holds it to use it? Apple demonstrated with a few phones how bad reception can be, but I found it amusing that one of the phones they used as an example, the Droid Eris, has the external antenna built into the TOP of the phone.

I see that Apple is going to send all iPhone 4 users a case to help reception issues. Maybe I'm stupid, but how is adding another layer over the antenna going to help reception?

Quote
"The technical explanation for the variation in signal strength found when closing the iPhone's case gaps with one's fingers is, that the antennas are being "loaded". The loading from fingers, a material with a high relative permittivity of ~50 at 2 GHz, changes the input impedance and resonant frequency of the antenna resulting in loss," Positronic_Matrix writes over on REDDIT's Apple forum.

"If I had to take an educated guess, I suspect pressing one's fingers across the gap increases the gap capacitance and changes the feed input impedance and electrical length of the antenna," Positronic_Matrix explains. "It is analogous to holding on to a piano wire with two fingers while it is being struck. Its resonant frequency will shift and its quality factor will drop, resulting in a sound that is off key and muffled."

"A solution often employed in the field is to preload an antenna. Preloading is including a large permittivity in the design, so when a human puts it close to their body, there isn't a significant change. The down side of this is that it often reduces bandwidth and efficiency," Positronic_Matrix explains. "So you can either have a great antenna that takes a hit when your fingers are near it or have one that is not quite as good but never changes. Isn't it like Apple to choose the former and like the masses to cry for the latter? (wink)"

Positronic_Matrix explains, "Note that if the antennas were designed to be inside the case as opposed to being part of it, they would likely have a loss somewhere between the best (unloaded) and worst (loaded) performance of the existing antenna. It's all an engineering tradeoff."

"The best solution is to not touch the antennas at the gap (Steve is right) or to buy a phone cover that keeps your high-permittivity sausages away from the RF sensitive areas," Positronic_Matrix writes. "Apple made the trade off for you and in my opinion it is a novel and good one, provided it can survive the bad PR generated by the griping gap grippers."
Stupid.

Not as stupid as the person who decided putting the internal antenna in the bottom of the phone was a good idea, at least.

Jobs fucked up going after the Droid.  It was an out right lie and just about everyone that doesn't have their lips around the Apple cock is beating him to death over it.  I also love his choice of going after Droid's "lowest end" device to explain that his phone merely meets that sort of standard.

However, I do get it...

"I don't care" rings louder and louder in my head when I hear about all this goofy shit.

Yeah, I found it interesting that they didn't use one of the big boys as an example. I like my Eris and all, but I know it's not a higher end phone like the Incredible. That's fine. It still does pretty much everything that the iPhone does. I think once people start realizing this, Apple will lose a little bit of their stranglehold.

I just read a story on Fox News that talks about some of the companies Jobs used as examples, firing back. RIM sees it the same way you do.

"One thing is for certain, RIM's customers don't need to use a case for their BlackBerry smartphone to maintain proper connectivity," Lazaridis and Balsillie wrote. "Apple clearly made certain design decisions and it should take responsibility for these decisions rather than trying to draw RIM and others into a situation that relates specifically to Apple."

My wife used to have a BB, and never had connectivity issues. I don't need a case to use my Eris either. Why is it so difficult to just say "Ok, we fucked up", and fix it? No reason to drag other manufacturers into it. Total bitch move by Apple, IMO, and they are simply trying to deflect.

The funniest part of it all?  You KNOW that most iPhone user's response to all of this is "I don't care".   Which makes Steve Jobs not admitting the issue is a design FLAW, all that much more hilarious.  What an arrogant fuck.

I simply don't see why they have to bring other phones into it to explain their oversight in design. For that matter, they used phones that DON'T have to have a cover on them to make them work as examples. I've never even used an iPhone so I'm not going to compare it to something else. I just think having to issue out phone covers to make a phone functional is stupid, and then instead of just admitting you fucked up, trying to tear down other products.

You're exaggerating the issue like the media is. I never dropped a single call and haven't had a case for a month. People who hold their phones in some awkward Vulcan death grip, who also live in cities where the AT&T network is over crowded, occasionally experience a dropped call on 1% of their calls. Boo hoo.

Like Brad said, I'm happy with my phone. I like the Droids too, but just prefer the iPhone. Especially after jailbreaking them.

Steve Jobs, is that you??

SO exaggerated, in fact, that Apple felt the need to call a press conference about it, and drop the cash to give everybody who has bought one, or will buy one over the next 2 months, a free cover. I just find all of this amusing due to those who think that anything other than the iPhone is shit. I'm not saying anybody should pick a Droid phone over an iPhone. I just think it is stupid to have a flawed design, then go and attack other manufacturers because you fucked up. Manufacturers whose phones DON'T have the issues your phone has.

The bad P.R. is out there, we've established that. Whether or not it's warranted or exaggerated, is another issue altogether. Apple being proactive about it doesn't mean that their phones are non-functional without the cases, it means that Apple goes above and beyond the call of duty to make customer satisfaction a top priority.

But I'm sure you know better than I do, having never touched an iPhone of any kind, let alone the 4, when I've had the 3G for years, and have used the iPhone 4 every day since its release.

Easy, Chizad Jobs. You kids sure are defensive of your iPhones nowadays.

Simply saying if Apple is doing what they are doing, it must be for a reason. They certainly aren't doing it out of the kindness of their hearts. I'm sure it's not a problem with every phone, but it appears to be a design flaw, nonetheless. I read somewhere the other day that the iPhone 4 has a higher return rate than any other smartphone currently on the market has had. I'm trying to remember where I saw it, but if true, I would say there is something to it.

Ordered the Incredible Saturday. Its on 3-4 week backorder at the moment so I should get it 2nd week of August. Also played around with the Droid X. Ummm, yeah, nice phone and all but clunky as poop - no thanks. A buddy of mine has the iPhone4 and played around with the Incredible for a few mins. He wished he had dropped ATT and gotten the Droid now. That phone is sick.  Seeing them side by side really lets you see what is best for you. Note: The HDMI 720P output on the X is nice, but thats about it.

Jobs should be careful what he asks for:

I'll give my initial review and comparisons later this evening when I get home.

As far as the proximity issue, I have the Otterbox case on it now, but didn't have any facial contact issues for the day and a half of use beforehand.   With that said, one day of my phone calls probably equal an average user's week.

So far, no issues.
