Title: #1 JUCO prospect visiting Auburn
Post by: Ogre on December 18, 2009, 09:43:33 AM
Cameron Newton, 5* QB originally from Westlake High School in Atlanta, will be visiting Auburn this weekend.  He's narrowed his choices down to Auburn, Oklahoma and Mississippi State.  He wants to make a decision within the next 10 days.  Should be interesting.

I need a link or I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask you to wack your own pee-pee.

I hope this is the case.  You can't have too many big time QBs on the roster.  We've had a ton of could be's and should be's.  I want some big time, can't miss guys under center.

They have been talking about this on Rivals. This has me scared a little for 2 reasons:

1. This may mean that they are not on the TR band wagon and he did something more than what people realize and the coaches have lost faith. If that is the reason, I am dissappointed, but at least the coaches aren't trying to "force" the TR thing to work and realize they need a back-up plan.

2. This dude was the one that originally signed with Florida and then got kicked off the team for stealing a kids computer a couple years ago.

Either way, I think this is a "plan B" and not part of the coaches original plans. I think the coaches were going to give TR the reighns next year, and if they take a chance on this kid, it means, for what ever reason, that they have doubts about letting TR lead this team.

Again, this is just speculation on my part but I don't see bringing this kid in as a "good" thing...

This is what I was thinking too WE! We havent recruited a QB at all this whole year then all the sudden a few weeks after TR's undisclosed troubles Newton shows up at Auburn. Something tells me that Rollisons suspension may very well be for a year like originally rumored. Auburn hasnt offered Newton as of yet that we know of, but this whole situation has been kept quiet for both of these guys.

As far as Newtons past discretions though, Chizik has shown he is not scared to boot a guy for grades or questionable character so I feel pretty good that if Auburn does offer Newton then the coaches feel pretty comfortable that Newton has done an about face.

In mind, I do see this as a sign of something going on with Rollison. Newton has a freakin cannon for an arm and he is a good fit for this type of offense so I say lets pull the trigger and get this guy in here.

Okay...time for my own "conspiracy theory"...

A few weeks back, we heard from Luper that we will have a big commit by Christmas.  Not long after that, we hear that Rollison is suspended for the Bowl Game.  Now, we start hearing that Newton is visiting and says he wants to make a decision by Christmas.

Any of you think Rollison may have had a pouty fit when he found out they were going after Newton...and thus the reason for the suspension?

Now I am hearing rumors of some 6-12 495lb stud QB we might be getting. This day is turning out supercalafragilisticexpealadocious!

Might very well be the case. The other case is might very well be his grades, or both.

My feeling is we have a big time QB prospect who sees the possibility of quick playing time at an SEC program on it's way up.  No staff on the face of God's green earth is going to say, Naaa..we've got already got a QB who has never set foot on the field.  Is it possible that Auburn could have more than one top shelf QB on the roster.  Has Florida not had this kid, John Brantley and Tim Tebow on the roster?  Didn't Georgia have 3-4 Five star QB's on their roster last year?

There may be something up with Rollison but nobody knows anything other than he's suspended for a game.  I'm also not worried about the incident at UF.  There are people who learn from their mistakes and take advantage of 2nd chances.

Maybe. But why now? We haven't even recruited a QB at all. The coaches said earlier in the year that we weren't taking one. I am pretty sure that this kid has been playing football all year. Why right now? After the "suspension" of TR. Something is up...I am just not sure what it is...

Common sense says though, if a former UF QB, 5* QB and QB that might WANT to come to Auburn, and has only 2 years, giving your newb time to develop, it's hard to pass that up...

It's going to be interesting for sure...

Looks like the charges against him were dropped according to scout...

Quote
Newton left Florida after being accused of stealing a laptop from another student. The charges have since been dropped against Newton and he says his real reason for leaving Gainesville was that he wanted a chance to play.

“My experiences at Florida were excellent,” Newton says. “My only negative at Florida was that I didn’t get a chance to play. A lot of people got the vibe that I got kicked off the team because of a legal issue, but that legal issue took care of itself. All of the charges are dropped from it. I left Florida because I could see myself being a key component to a team and I wanted the chance to showcase my ability.”

I believe though, the ONE thing this should tell us for sure is that Malzahn doesn't think Caudle will be next year's starter.  Nothing against the kid, but I tend to agree.

One more plus to Cameron...

He'd be our 5th spot early enroller...  He'd count towards last year and be there for spring practice...
Title: Re: #1 JUCO prospect visiting Auburn

Even though we haven't been after a QB actively, we're obviously not "set" at the position.  As Birdman wisely noted, programs have QBs stacked when they can do it.  LSU used Russell Shepard as a runner this year.  Alabama and LSU have taken 5 QBs in the last four classes.  Florida signed 3 QBs the year after they signed Tebow (one of which was Newton).  Then they signed another last year, and have one in this year's class.

We currently have guys who haven't played and may not even play QB (Rollison, Mosley, Cooper), a guy who has played but likely is a step down from Todd (Caudle), and another guy coming off an injury who hasn't really played either (Trotter).

I would say that we have some bodies, but we're not "loaded".

I'm also wondering if part of it is Newton wanting to come here.  I've read that he highly considered Auburn when he signed with Florida, plus, playing in Texas the last couple years, I'm sure he knew Luper, Trooper, or Malzahn (or all three).

I won't be surprised if he goes to Mississippi State to be a "Tebow" type in Mullen's offense (at least that's probably what he's being sold there).

This may be another reason.  Maybe they know at this point that they aren't going to get another JUCO kid and there are no other HS kids in our class that graduated early.  So why not....he's essentially a free recruit, not counting towards this class, and Lord knows we have available spots in the 85 man roster.

Hell, put him at TE or receiver or DE.  He's 6' 6", 247 lbs, and runs a 4.5.  I'm thinking we can find somewhere for a guy like that.

I think with only two years to play, he's going to want to go where he has talent around him now.  Not saying we're all that, but we're certainly better equiped at this stage verus MSU.  I WOULD be surprised for this reason.  I think Mullens needs a freshman, sophmore to ride and build with.

I like it. A lot.

During the entire spring and most of the summer last year I remember being on the verge of panic about the QB situation. I was under no illusions that the coaches hadnt named a starter because Burns and Caudle were both so damn good. And then Todd comes in and wins it flat out. We just didn't have anything better.

Now we supposedly do. I agree that there's something going on w Rollinson, I don't know what, but I say halledamnlujah if the staff is looking to cover our asses by getting the Newton kid. And even if there isn't.... what's wrong with upping the comp?
This guy is a beast...and he could hit the field right this minute. Me likey.

Word on the skreets....Ken Adams will commit and sign with Auburn within the next few days and it's very possible that Cameron Newton won't be too far behind.

WOTS....Ken Adams as had his mind made up to commit to Auburn for a while now, but didn't want to decommit from Tennessee until he was ready to sign (Mom and Pops want him at Auburn).

WOTS...Cameron Newton was basically set and ready to ink with Mississippi State a few weeks back, that was until Coach Luper and Coach Malzahn made a visit.  Cameron decided to go ahead and take an official visit to Auburn, basically to sit and talk with the coaches a little more indepth.  Well, he left this past Sunday saying that Auburn is making it really hard on him (to make his selection) while he was grinning from ear to ear.  It's down to MSU and Auburn for him, OU is out of the picture.

I read the "Auburn is making it hard on me" differently than that.  He said he was going to go home and report to his parents the good points about Auburn but that we were "making it hard on him" because there was so many good things.  That was how I took it, given the context of his quote.  His parents weren't there, and he said, "They are making it hard on me. I’m going home with not just ‘hey mom, pops,’ but ‘they got this, they got that, you have to see this, you have to see that.’ It’s a major plus right now as far as a recruit.”  Who knows.

I did see somewhere that his dad has been out of town and his announcement will likely come after Christmas.  Not sure if that's accurate, just something I read.

I think that it was a Major, MAJOR plus that he was able to watch practice, he got the chance to watch all of the playmakers that he'll be surrounded by if he decides to choose Auburn.  If he comes to Auburn he'll definitely get a shot at the starting QB spot and he'll be surrounded by playmakers.  If he goes to MSU he'll, more than likely, be the starting QB right off the bat but he will not be surrounded by playmakers, like he would be at Auburn.  I'm not saying that MSU doesn't have some playmakers on Offense, I'm saying that they don't have them at most of the key positions for the QB to be able to shine.  The only reason why he was a, somewhat, heavy lean towards MSU was because of his former QB Coach/Co-OC at Florida and now HC at MSU, Coach Mullens...that's it.

As for him saying, "They're making it hard on him" talking about his parents...I'm guessing he's saying that they've wanted him to make the decision for a while now and that he wished that they would've been able to Auburn with him.  If he does, infact, commit and sign on Christmas Day, then I too say he's going to be in Orange and Blue next year.
