Title: Sonic Boom goes bust...
Post by: Kaos on October 14, 2009, 03:44:34 PM
KISS new album Sonic Boom will debut at number 2 on Billboard this week.  It failed (miserably) to meet projections of 175 - 200,000 sales, selling only 108,000 in its opening week.

Some homosexual queer named Michael Bubble (I've never heard of him, but apparently Oprah likes the taste of his ass) debuted at #1, selling about 130,000 of which 127,000 were rumored to have been purchased by bug-eye bitch Winfrey herself.

By contrast, AC/DC unloaded nearly 800,000 in its opening week via an exclusive deal with Wal Mart.

There are some reasons.  Wal Mart definitely did not deliver its part of the bargain. The store promised huge promotions like they provided for AC/DC including multiple lines of merchandise and separate "Korners" that would spotlight the KISS CD and other affiliated merchandise.

I went to ten different stores in four states over the last week.  None of them had any promotional areas at all. The CD was buried behind fucking Selena Gomez in many of the stores and I didn't find the first KISS Korner in any of them.

If I was Gene I would sue.

It's also very possible that despite the quality of the CD (which is just as good as Black Ice, as it wasn't much to write home about) people just don't care to purchase music from the "fake" KISS.  A number of fans outright reject Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer wearing Ace and Peter's makeup respectively.

Psycho Circus -- not a good CD -- sold 110,000 in its first week when it was released in 1998.

Expect Sonic Boom to bust its ass right off the charts next week and disappear.  Be surprised if it makes Gold status at this point.

Maybe that's enough.  Maybe it's time to ride off in the sunset.  This tour is selling out pretty much everywhere.  Go out with a blast and be done with it.

The album sales are horribly disappointing.

It's because the public finally realized that KISS phuking sucks.

Concert ticket sales say that realization hasn't hit yet.

If people haven't figured it out in 35 years either it isn't true or they never will.

I don't know because I don't really listen to them (at least in the last 15+ years).  But just because they sell out shows doesn't really mean they don't suck.

Tony Bennett may sound like Harry Cary sometimes, but he'll still sell out shows, just because he has fans that stretch back to the early 50's.

Fans love to go see bands (performers) that take them back in time.

Are you serious?  You realize KISS predates this novelty act by 20 years, right?

You weren't alive when it started.  Don't expect you to understand.

There's a parallel between being a KISS fan and being an Auburn fan particularly in relation to growing up in the 70s.

Are you serious Clark?

It's supposed to look like a cat.  That's the point. Thanks for noticing.  Peter (the drummer) was the "Catman"  Even had a cat tattoo on the left shoulder. It was his persona.

Gene = "Demon"
Paul = "Starchild"
Ace = "Space Ace"
Peter = "Catman"

And yes, it rocked.

No.  Not at all.

If there's anything remotely gay, it would be Paul.

KISS - Sure Know Something (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_wCqV9_zgk#)

Kiss - Shandi (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJxHJgIfnSY&feature=related#)

vs.

Kiss Irvine CA 1996 - Black Diamond (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W75uz0xidJ0&feature=related#)

Total lack of gayness from Ace and Peter.

I don't want to have this arguement again, but if KISS doesn't wear wigs and high hells and paint their faces and fly around on floating stages, they have nothing. The music is average at best and anyone could do it. Their timing was good and they were the "original" so they have a following...

Hell, Garth Brooks was big back in the day and flew around on wires and had fire at his show. People loved going to see him in concert, but that doesn't mean his music was good...

Funny you should mention that.

Garth Brooks = Big KISS fan.  Covered Hard Luck Woman on one of his albums.

90% of what Brooks did on stage, he copied directly from KISS shows.

He took the same formula (even gave credit to that fact) and became the biggest country star in the world -- following in the footsteps of the biggest rock band in the world at one time.

Nothing my ass, by the way.  If "anybody" could do it, anybody would.  Anybody can't.

If you're talking about playing the songs, then you can say that about every band in the world. There's nothing The Eagles, Beatles, Pink Floyd, Van Halen or any other band does that somebody else can't replicate and play almost note for note.

I want to rock and roll all night, and even perhaps party every day.

And see, this is the problem.  That song identifies the band when it's really one of their weaker efforts.  Most people don't see past that one iconic track -- well that and Beth -- and dismiss it in its entirety.

KISS Unplugged should be mandatory listening.

The early work was very good.  The debut album from 1974 contained Deuce, Strutter, Firehouse, Cold Gin, 100,00 Years and Black Diamond.  Every bit of that holds up.  Deuce and Diamond are very solid tracks.  The sound from that time was unlike anything else out there.  KISS helped invent metal, a genre that didn't really exist at the time.

Darkness will fall on the city
It seems to follow you too
And though you dont ask for pity
Theres nothin that you can do, no, no

I am unexplainably disinterested.

I don't know why we will beat Kentucky.

I heard the idiots on the radio down here (Scott Hunter, Former Fatass Schultz and that crew) predicting a very tight game and a one or two-point Auburn win.  The line's like 12.

I am lethargic, however.

I am working on an article about the flag phenomenon.  I heard some dumbass Bammer on Finebaum snickering about the disappearing Auburn flags after the Arkansas loss and was flabbergasted.  Last year I was sitting at a redlight at Eastern Shores on the Friday before the SEC Championship game.  I counted 37 flags and magnets around me.  The parking lot at the mall looked like a mushroom field with the white flags sticking up on the cars.  The Monday after?  None at the same redlight.  None.  No flags. No magnets. I drove through the ES parking lot and found one car with two flags on it in the whole damn lot.

Bastards.

Depends on the song you choose to sample.

I think you can say that about pretty much every band, again.  My ten year old could hear four chords and identify Ozzy or Eagles or AC/DC or Van Halen or GnR.

Don't all bands -- with the possible exception of Beatles -- have the same basic "sound" that's easily identifiable?

Kinda.  I think any band would like to know their sound or style is recognizable.  It's a good thing to say "that song sounds like that band".  But maybe not so good to say "that song sounds like.....that song".

Meaning, you can typically pick out a U2 song pretty quick.  But you don't usually get the different U2 songs confused.  Even though they sound like U2, they don't all sound the same.

I'll check out the unplugged album you speak of though, I haven't really given them a chance in recent decades.

Bust may be premature.  Or not.

Insider info says that WalMart seriously dropped the ball.  The chain failed to provide the promotion it guaranteed KISS in the opening week.  My noted issues with finding the CD on the release date as well as the complete and utter lack of any pretense at promoting the material -- no KISS Korners as agreed, no blankets, no peripherals nothing -- were a significant contributing factor to the odd debut numbers.

Numerous WalMart stores on the East Coast, including Boston and New York failed to even stock the CD as planned. Customers who went on the 6th expecting to be able to purchase it were told it "might" be on the truck and they should come back later in the week.

KISS says the problems with WalMart are solved.  I will go tomorrow.  If there's no KISS Korner and I can't get my swag?  I'm going to be pissed.

Thanks WalMart you fucking fucks for helping deny KISS the one thing the band doesn't have on its resume.  A number one debut.  Fucking Arkansas WalMart fucks.

I hate that damn place.  Further reason why I'll be taking all my discount shopping business to Target from now on.

REM is another band with it's unique sound.  As far as Walmart f'g KISS, Who The Fuck Cares.  If I was going to buy this album, I'd be pissed that I'd have to even go into walmart with all the fucktards, Bammers, and FAT People that ride around on the electric shopping carts to even buy this album.  I like to Think that Gene simmons is a brilliant money maker.  He should have gotten with Best Buy, Target or even sold the album online only from a website than go to Walmart. I'd like to think that since I graduated from Auburn, that let me get a great job with a modest income I can afford to shop at winn Dixie or Super Target instead of having to even go to that Shithole, even if it is for a Kiss album.

Negative Ghost Rider.

I knew WalMart fucked the goat around here.  Three different stores I had to go to in order to get the CD.  That's not promotion.  That's suck.

Heard today that the problems I ran into were not isolated.

WalMart sucks.  It was an error in judgement for KISS to make the deal.  They expected the same kind of support WalMart gave AC/DC and got the kind of push they gave Springsteen instead.  Zero.

I'd sue.  Won't go to the Mart for anything else.
