Title: Where in world is Dook?
Post by: Tarheel on March 11, 2009, 08:33:32 PM
Busy as I am I could not let this week pass without pointing out to my friends Birdman and Aubie16 that Dook has dropped to 9 in the polls this week (number 3 in the ACC...behind the Tarheels and Wake Forest).

That was a great game this past Sunday, eh?

Excerpt from the AP, all emphasis is my own:

North Carolina back on top of poll

By JIM O'CONNELL – [9 Mar 2009]

North Carolina edged Pittsburgh for No. 1 in The Associated Press' college basketball poll on Monday in one of the closest votes ever.

The Tar Heels (27-3), who were an unanimous No. 1 in the preseason poll and for the first seven weeks of the season, moved up one place to reclaim the top spot after beating Duke on Sunday to win the Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season title.

Pittsburgh (28-3) moved up one place after beating Connecticut for a second time this season when the Huskies were ranked No. 1. The Panthers finished tied for second in the Big East with Connecticut, one game behind Louisville.

North Carolina received 35 first-place votes and 1,734 points from the 71-member national media panel. Pittsburgh was No. 1 on 33 ballots and had 1,731 points.

On Jan. 27, 1981, Oregon State and Virginia tied for No. 1, the only time that has happened since the poll began in the 1948-49 season.

Connecticut (27-3), which had moved back to No. 1 last week, dropped to third and was followed by Memphis, Louisville, Oklahoma, Michigan State, Wake Forest, Duke and Villanova.

Memphis (28-3), which has the nation's longest winning streak at 22 games and completed its third straight unbeaten regular season in Conference USA, received two No. 1 votes, while Louisville (25-5) received the other first-place vote.

The ACC — North Carolina, Wake Forest and Duke — and Big East — Pittsburgh, Connecticut, Louisville and Villanova — accounted for all but three spots in the top 10. The five teams that have held No. 1 this season — North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Wake Forest, Duke and Connecticut — are all from those two conferences.

I was in a hotel last night and "The Battle for Tobacco Road" came on LATE last night on HBO. I had to try and stay up and watch it because I love this series. You guys need to watch it. It is a pretty good documentary. I watched about 45 minutes of it and then I feel asleep, but what I saw was very good.

I kept thinking that UNC was more like Alabama where Duke was more like Auburn. There are A LOT more UNC fans than Duke fans and Duke, as good as they are, are a bit of the under dog in the state of NC.

Negative ghost rider.  Anyone who has Dickie V. smoking their pole no matter what the weather or ranking cannot be compared to Auburn.

You are smoking dope.  I would not compare Carolina OR Duke to Alabama.  Your attempt at a comparison/contrast is flawed.

In fact, the more I ruminate on it, there's not one...not ONE...Tobacco Road team that I would compare to Alabama...not Duke, not Wake, not N. C. State, and definitely not Carolina.

I am highly offended.

You, Sir, owe an apology to the entire State of North Carolina!

By the way..flipping channels and came to VT and BC in Atlanta.

1,500 people there, tops.  Countless dozens.  Fucked up move.  The SEC and ACC should have stayed where they were.

I don't owe shit...The comparison I made was simply based on most of the state of N. Carolina being Tarheel fans and Duke being the small non-state school with less support in the state. It reminded me of Auburn and Alabama. That is all I said. How do you disagree with that?

Would you agree that most people in NC are Tarheel fans wether they have a affiliation with the school or not? Would you agree that most people in Alabama are UA fans wether they have an affiliation or not? Would you agree that Auburn/Alabama is the best football rivalry in the US? Would you agree that UNC/Duke is the best BBall rivalry in the US?

You see where I am going....how is this flawed?

You took my post WAY too seriously.

Have a whiskey-drink and calm the fuck down.

However, anecdotal as it is based on my own experience with family, friends, neighbors, and acquaintances in my birth state, I would say that those folk in North Carolina who are college basketball fans are fairly evenly disbursed between Wake Forest, Duke, N. C. State, and UNC.

My somewhat feigned offense was at being compared to what I would describe as the typical knuckle-dragging, mouth-breathing Alabama fans that I've met.

There's no comparison.

Congratulations!

We avoided the inevitable Heel stomping thanks to the Noles'.  However, if my bracket holds true (And Lord knows I'm due since my last 4,012 haven't) I have a Devil/Heel Final 4 matchup.

I love my Dookies but when it comes to money, I ain't totally stupid.  I've got the Mountain Goats taking it all.

While it was not the only reason for the result of that Carolina/ FSU game in the ACC Tournament it was a perfect example of what happens when you miss too damn many free throws!  I was throwing my arms up in disgust at each missed attempt knowing full well that my 'Mountain goats', as you call them, would need each one in that close game.

In the end they lost that game by three fucking points (yes, I'm a little bitter).  Of course, it didn't help that Ty Lawson was out of the game with a sore toe.

There's a member on Carolina board I visit who pointed out that the Tarheels didn't have anything really to play for after clinching the top position in the ACC regular season and almost assuring a number 1 seed in the NCAA tournament...I'd disagree except for the actual playing in that game with FSU.  Oh well.

Interesting that you have a Devil/ Heel Final Four matchup.  I've decided not to put money on the games this year...there's been enough bad karma already, eh?

I really would have liked to have see Auburn go all the way in the SEC Tournament and get to the big dance.
