Well honestly, there have always been stupid people, so maybe this is the future I was worried about.
Remember when there were these things called Record Stores? There was no internet to download your music from at the touch of a button. You actually drove to the Mall and walked in the store, to flip through the albums. If you heard something you liked, and didn't know who played it, you would go and give them as much information as you had, and see if they could find it for you.
Such was the case about 20 years ago. I heard a song on the AM/FM radios, that I assumed was called "Birmingham". It was. I loved the tune and thought it might be something I wanted to work up on the guitar, so I went in one of our record stores and asked the guy if he knew what artist sang Birmingham. He started typing, paused a few seconds, looked back up at me an asked....
"You mean, like the State?"
A few seconds of awkward staring, before I simply nodded, and said, "Yes, the State".
Fast forward to yesterday. I guess stupid applies to a lot of things, because I found myself at the McDonald's drive-thru. Okay, save it. I was hungry, it was right there, and no one was in line. I order my delicious Quarter Pounder w/Cheese, pull up to the pay window, and before the rocket surgeon takes my money, she hollers to someone in the back...

I expect a min wage worker to be less savvy than a professional seasoned adult. I know your comment was tongue in cheek (although snags prefers it in his butt) but I think the concern here is HOW much dumber some of these kids are now. They don't even know basics of geography, money, history, civics, etc. It's really the first time I've seen it this widespread my adult life. Its concerning.

Amazing to me how you can be so completely blind to the most basic realities. It doesn't matter what the minimum wage is, the only thing that matters is buying power. $20 an hour? Who cares when a Big Mac costs $8.99 and gas costs $6 a gallon. OH! Then they need $30!! Okay, now the Mac is $10.99 and gas is $8.00.

Most Min Wage jobs are that for a reason. They require little skill, responsibility, stress, ROI, risk, or education to do them. You know all this - that's the part I can't understand. I like ya dawg, but I can't fathom how you don't see this stuff clearly.

The idea that those jobs are supposed to be "living wage" jobs is where the rails fell apart and the train crashed.

And never permanent. You work these jobs when you first start out. Get some coin, increase your skill set, education and experience and move on to a better job. Others come in behind you and take that spot. It’s a cycle. It’s people that are 28 and still working these jobs trying to make a living that’s the issue. You have to get skills that pay. It’s that simple. These people aren’t doing it.

Either of these being expressed is hardly being elitist. You can literally go drive a HS Bus a few hours a day with no exp needed, and they will train you, help you get a CDL and it's way better than min wage. Numerous examples like this. It can be done.

And it's really not that hard. My first job, I made minimum wage. I made about $70 a week. But I could take a $20, put five gallons of gas in my car, take a date to the movies, spring for appetizers and a meal at Red Lobster and get a blowjob on the way home. And I'd STILL have money in my pocket.
My goal in that day was to work my way up to making $30,000 a year. That was the big-time.
People today have WAAAY more opportunities than I did. I had to work two or three jobs and pay for my own college. I had to put in my time at some jobs I hated just to get experience so I could work my way to a higher level.
Minimum wage jobs are NOT living wage jobs. If you're in your 30s, have several kids to support and expect to make a "living wage" working 25 hours a week running the fryers at Burger King? That's a problem.
If you honestly expect minimum wage to be "living wage"? YOU'RE a problem. A big one.
If you truly think paying Chucky who scrambles eggs at Waffle House $20, $25, $30, $50, $100 an hour is going to change his circumstances or improve the economy? You need to put down the bong.
Life's not fair. It's not supposed to be. The idea that Maria from McDonald's should be on equal economic footing with somebody who has worked their way up to a more educated, more talented, more demanding position is absolute freaking lunacy. THIS is how America ends.
