Title: The Masters
Post by: Snaggletiger on April 05, 2022, 02:46:05 PM
One of my favorite weeks, and sporting events of the year.  Even though I haven't played golf in quite a few years, I still like watching it, and The Masters is must see TV. I even watch a lot of the coverage leading up to it during the week.  BUT.....

Tiger is back.  Here's the thing.  I've never minded TW.  I respect what he did for golf, and what he continues to do when he plays.  Hell, the man had as big a gallery following him around yesterday for a practice round, as you'll see on Sunday.  It's not his fault.  He can't help how people and the media just splooge all over themselves at his every move. And yes, I totally get what he means for the ratings this weekend.

But last night and today were prime examples of why I wish he wasn't playing this tournament.  I flipped over to the Golf Channel last night before the basketball game.  They were setting up 2 hours of straight Tiger coverage, to be followed by a special on him playing golf at 6 years old.

Today at lunch, I tune in and they're having a media session with interviews.  Justin Thomas, one of my favorites, is up.  First question.  "You've been talking to Tiger.  What advice has he been giving you?" If they asked him 10 questions, 8 of them were about Tiger.  "This course has a lot of elevation changes.  How hard is it for Tiger, after the surgeries, to navigate this course?"

Again, I get it.  It's not TW's fault.  But golf does itself no favors by not promoting all the stars who have carried the game while he's had his absences.

Heysus H Cristo.....CCT, Weskie and GH agree.

Having worked in the state of GA almost my entire career, the amount of splooge the frat boy looking country club wannabes ooze over the damn thing is nauseating. Its like a requirement that they all have to wear their little Masters Yellow Flag polos all week, as if its some sort of damn status symbol. And most of these dudes wouldn't be allowed to hold the ice water for the janitor at that place but they keep throwing money at the gear to give Augusta National free marketing.

Substitute the name Nick Saban in there for Tiger Woods and you get why I stopped watching football coverage on either ESPN or CBS...or any of the bammerham networks.

Fucking love The Masters.  But Tiger’s presence has already ruined it.

Actually agree with you here. I like the history of the tournament going back to the era of the ouldes like you - before we had cars, aspirin, electricity and stuff like that.

The Mize putt in the mid 80s. Jack and Arnie. Norman's hex. The beautiful job they do landscaping the place. All that's great. But it has become such an over commercialized nothing burger in the era of Tiger. The stupid polo shirts, the sploogefest guys named Chet, Sterling and Brooks have all over the state of Ga, the non stop 247 coverage, the fake demand they create to get in the damn place and lastly - yes, the non stop obsession with Tiger.

I have no personal issue with TW. There is no doubt the guy was a generational talent. Phenomenal and rare skill set he possessed. And he's had his transgressions which are actually far more complex than most realize. I implore anyone to watch the HBO DocDrama on him from a few years ago. Kid was destined to be dysfunctional in his personal life because of pops. But that's another thread for another day. But the non stop droning over him - IN 2022!!!!! - by the one and only US media is just sickening. You never saw this kind of obsession of Arnie, Jack, Norman or others this far past their primes. It was largely ceremonial and nostalgic when those guys played.

There are some great golfers in the world right now. And I mean, really really good. And it sucks they get overshadowed by all this noise.

And btw - if you've never been to Augusta - don't. Other than a neat little downtown area and that monstrosity of a Golf Course - the town is one big ghetto. In fact, its pretty ghetto almost right up to the entrance of Augusta National. Thats the part they leave out on TV.

I agree with your agreeance.  Years ago, me and a couple of buddies went to the final round of the Bell South Classic in Atlanta.  Turned out to be the last year of the tournament.  We had tickets to the Monday practice round at The Masters, so it was a neato=keen couple of days of watching golf.  Several things stood out.  First, the grounds at The Masters are everything you see on TV, and are told.  Unbelievably beautiful and groomed.  I found myself walking through the pine thickets looking for anything that remotely resembled a weed.  It ain’t there.

I saw John Daly hit a hole-in-one on 16.  Granted, it was his 3rd shot in there.  They were all taking several shots into the green.  Then, watching each player try to skip the ball across the water and up on the green was amazing.  That’s usually what happened to my ball when hitting a tee shot anywhere near H2O.  But here’s the thing.  We had way more fun at the Bell South.  The Masters is a horrible place to watch golf in person.  It’s just not set up to be able to see on a lot of the holes unless you found a way to get to the front of the crowd….and that ain’t happening either.  At the Bell South, we were standing right up next to the 18th green, slamming beer(z)

I’d go back to the Masters just to walk the course, but if I paid big money to watch a round, I think I’d probably be pretty pissed about it.

Covering Tiger is the safe way for all networks to claim they are hitting their minority coverage quota.
That is why its nonstop.

Stop interrupting my viewing of the Tiger Woods Invitational.  Sounds like a few other guys might be playing but I'm still not sure.

I will make an exception to my not watching golf rule. Years ago I found a vhs collection of Bobby Jones tapes. I bought them for my FIL, who could shoot par at 70.
I watched them first. That guy was magic.
